How to attach a gun to right hand

I am having the hardest time attaching a pistol to my characters right hand. I have done the right click prop assign new parent and it won't attach to the hand.

What hapens instead? Is it litraly a prop - an item without any bones - or is it a figure?

Parenting a prop gun to a hand doesn't actually move the gun to the hand. If you parent it and you move the hand, the gun will move too (even if its nowhere near the hand), that would show that it's "parented". If that's the case, that the gun does move when the hand moves, you will have to move the gun to the hand and put it in place and – unless there's a pose for it – pose the fingers into position to hold the gun.

    Hopefully that helps.

In Scripts/Utilities, Daz is providing a script called SnapParent which will move the prop to its parent (as long as it's a bone if I'm remembering right): it will not be perfectly placed, but it'll do part of the job:

To use it, the prop you want to move need to be parented to the correct bone, then select the bone and the prop:

Here I selected Left Hand and the gun, but with Genesis 9, they are 'Left/Right Hand Anchor' bones, which allows a better default positionning of the parented prop

    Parented to hand:

    Parented to anchor:

I normally position the prop (in this case the gun) to where I want it on the body and then parent it in place.

Correct answer smiley (parent to hand, but ALSO check Parent-in-Place).

You might also want to look at the gun's x/y/z coordinates - see @maymeanshope in this often-necroed thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/128241/reset-the-x-y-z-location-on-an-object-to-0-0-0

  • @Elor, I never knew that script was there. Getting a prop to the hand, or wherever, is the part that takes me forever. Thanks!
