Still haven't spent anything in MM.  Looking forward to this dull sale to be over and get back to regular sales that are much better. Why can't they give us $1.99-$2.49 NEW items as door prizes like they did in the past? I bought something pretty much daily then. And then that item counted as a new item to trigger PA item sales. The old items available to me as "door prizes" are so old, 3Delight old and they've remained the same throughout the whole sale! To me, this is the worst MM in the history of MM and I've been here 20 years! (I started when I was five. Kidding.) So far the only people who can take advantage of this sale are newbie DS users who are Premier. They are losing sales by not having anything appealing to long time customers who are Daz+.

Why not get books from the local library?

I am at work during virtually all the time the library is open. I work 8am to 4.45pm, rarely finishing before 5:10pm. The library is open 9am to 5pm. Saturday, it's open, granted, but...

My library of the books I want to read is considerably bigger than our library's. Our local library is the busiest in Kent, but the stock rotation between it and other libraries is less than 1 in 10 in a year. New books rarely appear in anything other than in the  'Medical Romance' and 'Self Help' genres (quite why, I don't know), and the average age of the books feels as if it is probably 10 to 15. The library never buys a series, just a random book from the series, and rarely the first book in the series. The cost of ordering a book from the catalogue, if it's available in another Kent library, is about the same as the cost of an average kindle book which you then have for.. a while.. instead of the 2 week loan.

Technical books are entirely absent. Books on programming never go beyond the levels exhibited in 'Dummies' books, which actually constitute the majority of the 'Technical Leaning' books in the library, and are unsatisfyingly shallow. Antiques, architecture (mostly modernist/brutalist, not anything that looks good), collecting etc are quite well represented, but are not core interests of mine.

Art books are limited to 'Fine Art', and I feel there is much art in the DAZ gallery here that massively exceeds the quality of all post 1900 'fine art', especially that produced by creatures like Picasso, Emmin & Hockney.

General Fiction, hmm. There is a certain amount of good stuff, but there is an enormous amount of, erm, dross to wade through. Some of the crime books are good, but the tales seem to be ridiculously convoluted, or (more often if set in the US) gratuitously nasty - which I end up feeling soiled by.

In the Sci-Fi/Fantasy category 'Horror'/'Buffy Rip-off'/'Vampire & Werewolf ripoff' books seem to amount to more than half the 30ft of shelves (by this I mean 3 off 10ft shelves), meaning worthwhile novels are quite thin on the ground. Despite the average book age being fairly high, classic SF/Fantasy (Tolkein, Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke etc) is largely absent.

Manga, not an interest of mine, but it's largely missing, last time I saw 2 books. My youngest daughter has over 1000. Romance is largely limited to Medical romance, because obviously all doctors & nurses are starved of attention rather than just being overworked.

Historical fiction is largely limited (at last look) to Samson's stories & Wolfe Hall. I'm sure there is history beyond Henry VIII, but you'd never know from our library. Classic Fiction (Austen, Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Bronte Sisters, George Orwell etc) are all present, but done to death already. Kipling has been eradicated as too imperialist, and Shakespear is 'Too difficult for people to understand'.

Humour. There is actually very little humour available in the place.

LGBTQ+ alphabet soup books have their own small ghetto. No idea if any are worth reading.

Biography: Oh yes. All the Z listers are represented, but rarely anyone who's achieved anything.

    Hobbies/Crafts: Almost nothing,

Religion: New age, lots, Christianity, nothing, doesn't exist. Other major religions fill a 5ft shelf.

Science & Nature. Amazing picture books, nothing of any depth. Languages, a few feet on each of French, German & Spanish, no foreign language reading books to continue and use knowledge gained. Mandarin has a few books, no other languages.

Children's books have their own section where sofas and armchairs encourage reading up to about 10, after that, no teen books, just adulting books.

That's a quick summary of why I don't borrow books from the local library too often. Don't think I have time for the full answer.

    Regards,

    Richard

Wow. I never realized how seriously spoiled I am.

My county's library system is huge, both for number of branches and selection, and they have a lot of evening hours so day-job people can visit too. What isn't available physically at your library can easily be shipped from wherever it is and put aside for pickup. They have a lot of ebooks that you can check out from the comfort of your home. And they have some system worked out with the adjacent library systems where you can get an interlibrary loan if you're after something that they don't have (I've needed to do this a couple times for research papers). The staff is all absolutely fantastic, especially with kids (having both been that kid and been the parent of that kid). They have self-check kiosks now so if people feel embarrassed about whatever they want to read, they can get it in privacy. They have a lot of community service programs, and a whole slew of computers for people to use if they need internet access, beyond the ones with the library search functionality. And many (most?) of the local branches have had either renovations or replacements in the last 10-ish or so years because the previous buidings weren't big enough to accomodate the growing suburban populations (and, I imagine, available literature... when I was a teen there just wasn't that much for options; I about died of joy when I discovered that there were fantasy books for grown-ups too).

I guess I thought all libraries were like that... like, that's just what a library /was/.

We can reserve books from within Kent, but there is a fee of £1.10 (US$1.42).

We can order books from other South East Libraries, then the fee is £3 ( US$3.87) and interlibrary loans from outside the SE area is £7 (US$9.03). That has gone down in the last couple of years, when it was the cost of a British Library form (£14/US$18.06). So.. as you can see, many of the reservation costs exceed the cost of many Kindle books.

They do have computers and access to e-magazines, but if there are e-books, I've missed such access and it isn't explicityly mentioned on the county council web site.

Wow. No fees here. I think they even did away with late fees within the last few years, IIRC, because they were concerned that it was a social justice issue and was keeping those who needed the library most away because they couldn't afford to pay it.

Our library's ebooks are through the online card catalog... once you find a title, it has a list of the formats available. Not all the physical books have ebooks, and not all the ebooks have physical books, but if there's an ebook available, instead of placing a hold you just place an online checkout. There are several formats available, you pick which one you want, and after the allotted two weeks it disappears from your library unless you go in and renew it first. (You can also go in and check it back in if you finish sooner, which I try to do so it's available for someone else.)

As a thread derailment specialist, I want to pop in to post this my renders of Sylvia in her neon hot tub, inside this weeks free Jungle Hut.

But back on topic, I picked up the Charlie 9 bundles today, not bad.  I am warming up to more male themed characters since my library is essentially 95% female.  We need more high quality male figures and I believe he is one of them.

    Thanks!

  • @NetherFalcon Nice renders, the hot tub is doing a good job helping her de-stress from assorted battles.

If you got the Charlie character bundle, what about the other items? Uniform accuracy & quality? What about the weapons? (Odd he doesn't have a thread yet, but I didn't feel right about starting one since I don't own the character.)

I might pick him up later in the month. I am waiting to see if there's another new release this month or any older ones get added before deciding.

Charlie found himself in that Sci Fi Hallway.  Even worse, a giant Cecelia emerged from a suspicously placed Neon Hot Tub!  How's he going to get out of this one??

My local library has a huge swimming pool on the roof where you can even take swim classes or in pool exercise classes! Super modern, clean and beautiful with outdoor grounds where they sometimes have book fairs. Computers galore. They have lots of events there, I went to a reception with food (unfortunately no alcohol) where we could meet and mingle with our local politicians. The adjacent park was the location for Elton John's Oscar party this year. It has meeting rooms, a cafe, poetry readings, book signings, art exhibits...  I just realized I should go more often!

My library isn't nearly as fancy as @Wonderland's I fear. The closest we have to a pool is a splash castle at the end of the kids' summer reading program.

It's in a very rural area, as are most of the libraries in the two county system (the exception is the main branch in a small city with several colleges). But we have plenty of books, plus audiobooks and DVDs that can be requested from any branch in the system for free; interlibrary loans from others are free but do have a hefty late fee after 10 days. Our e-books and many audiobooks are loaned via Hoopla or Overdrive. The programs range from traditional book clubs and toddler/preschooler activities to gardening to role-playing games. There is even a couple of 3D printers

(I say our library because my husband and I are both volunteers and members of Friends of the Library. My husband wrangles those 3D printers while I do more low tech tasks. I find shelving and shelf reading relaxing.)

I think the way the gold stars work in this sale do not incline one to buy. For example a number of today's new releases are of interest to me, and I would be tempted to pick 1 or more up, but I don't have a gold star so new releases are a lot more expensive. If I make a small purchase I will get a gold star, but not until tomorrow. I can of course pick up today's new releases tomorrow with a gold star, but then the extra 30% off the back catalogue items will not apply, as only new releases count. There are no perks at all in buying still mad releases, which is odd. Does not really encourage you to buy at all, so I wont.

That's why they have their Mad Door items, so that you buy one every other day to keep your gold star. Just in case something nice shows up as a new release.

If that is the case then they should put some better stuff in there. I struggled to find even 1 item in that ancient list I was willing to pay $2.50 for, and since the list does not change I barely even look at it now.

On topic (for a few posts anyways).

Haven't found anything I really wanted/needed this week. There's a few things I plan to get either in the next catch up or towards the end of the month, but not many.

The Snow Queen character bundle was in my LDs yesterday so I did pick that up. SQ has been in my WL for months, the included hair was also WL, & it would be 40¢ after my $10 DO coupon. Plus my current "project" is updating the look for an ice themed super heroine RPG PC of mine. So why wouldn't I?

I looked at the Add-on bundle to see if I wanted to WL it but decided not to, since the child/teen/elder shapes were removed from the store - not just the bundle - which doesn't leave much. I've got enough updo hairs and fancy gowns right now. The semi-skimpwear armor(?) might be good for a super heroine/villainess, except mine really, really hate stiletto boots. ("You can't get boots off fast enough to effectively weaponize the stilettos in a pinch, so what's the point?") Don't be surprised if someday (unless floor prices stick around) it gets discounted low enough I that I buy the Add-on.

The Snow Queen is an underrated character.  Her normal form is quite tall and lithe, with a middle aged look which we don't see much of these days.  It's good to have variety aside from mostly 22 year old female swimsuit models.  The alternate forms are okay.  The head forms, however, don't work very well with preset emotions, especially smiles.  The bodies are at least useful for other morphs.  I wasn't aware they were removed for individual purchase; it's strange that some alternate forms stay but others don't.

Yeah, the body shapes were from a time when DAZ was doing "buy the pro bundle within two weeks of release (or some other short period) and get these alternate shapes before they're gone" artificial scarcity BS. Some have come back, others weren't under those terms, but who knows when they'll bring them all back.

They were time limited shapes (available only during 30 days after Snow Queen's release).

Around two weeks ago, Daz changed the whole line-up of Genesis 9 Bundles to switch every core figure to the HD Character / HD Addon bundles system they are using since Premier started, and all the time limited or Pro bundle exclusive shapes are now available in the HD Addon of their respective characters.

Most of these alternates shapes can also be bought individually or through a shape bundles but for an unknown reason, Snow Queen 9's and Olivia 9's shapes were not purchasable outside of the HD Addons (something I reported here).

As far as I know, nothing has changed since my initial report: I didn't check all bugs I reported, but at least one of them is still here, so the report is likely sitting in the pipeline of the problem Daz has to fix, behind problems deemed more urgent.

I picked up many items at over 80% off that I wanted previously, but waiting until they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. smiley

On the SQ Add-on page, only the thumbnails for the 2 outfits and Pamela Hair are there but every place else on the page mentions the shapes. I suppose I could buy the bundle and if they aren't there, return it, but not going to that trouble when it's full price. Almost $20 each for the 3 other items I'm only lukewarm about? Nope.

Three promo renders are showing the alternate shapes and my guess is the main promo render is also showing at least the elder shape if not the younger shape too.

Snow Queen 9 is also listed as a requirement for the bundle and amont the items said to be included with the bundle, only the alternate shapes have any reason to require her to work.

Having said that, if you're not particularly interested by the other items and with a bundle without any extra discount, waiting feels like the best plan of action: at some point, Daz will fix the mistakes, either all the numerous ones they did to give the impression to anyone that the alternate shapes were included, or the ones preventing the alternates shapes to be sold individually. Or a big discount will be applied to it.

On the page for the add-on bundle it says the alternate shapes are included and shows what they are at the bottom of the page-it's just the sites that are missing because either Daz doesn't want these to be purchasable (at the moment) or they haven't added them back into the store for that purpose.  Either way, you can get them now if you want.

Yeah but they're all super old and I've passed on them already hundreds of times. I'm not going to spend $2.49 on something I'll never use that's 3Delight or V4 just in hopes that I'll want something new the next day and the associated PA items. This sale only works for newbies who have Premier.

Instead of all the new AI gimmicks Daz is coming up with they should have AI scour the forums and summarize all our complaints to Daz staff.
