Don't matter how much I'm digging my new GTX and Iray, I'm still really excited about what is going on with LuxRender, and Reality is bringing the goodies.
It would be awesome to see something happen with Luxus too. Spheric? :D I was planning to do a more comprehensive writup about what's going on with OpenCL, Lux and Cycles etc for DigiSprawl but I got caught up in the moment, and just wrote about Reality 4.1.Post here
Who else is excited?

Most definitely.
And it's September 21st.
I AM!
I stopped rendering with reality when Iray came out but now that there will be much easier conversion of Iray materials to luxrender, I cannot wait to render with it again : )
Whops! Thanks for the catch. :)
Right there with ya Toyen. I cut down on Lux renders a long time ago - using LightWave more but Iray made it too easy to get back into PBR. I always liked Lux though, plus the GUI with ability to pause, close, and reload scenes midway is a huge plus.
Just as I was starting to move over to iray. Killer news either way. My lux stuff does look better due to experience. Iray will still have it's use there are times I get materials that does not convert well in lux some darker skin has red speckles. Either way long drawn out render times to have quality images are a thing of the past!
SWEET!!!! While I am excited about the speed increase, the texture multi edit feature is a godsend!!!!!
I am definitely excited about the release of Reality 4.1 on Sep 21. The fact that it will convert IRAY materials is just great! I can't wait.
I am - I'm trying to get used to IRay... but I'm hit and miss with it. I end up cranking up Reality - because I can SEE what I'm doing with that. KNOW where my lights are. Find the variety I need to mix it up. I am DEFINITELY excited!
I love that. It means I can continue deleting 3Delight mats when adding new Iray-enhanced content to my library.
Yeah will be awesome just got my notification email today so am stoked for the 21st though going to seem like forever for it to come around.. :D
Meanwhile we can play with iray its all good. The fact that Reality can use iray shaders add that much more flexibility. I am sure they will both have things to offer..
Easy network rendering is another big factor for me. Since 4.1 is a free upgrade I will be giving it a try again. Especially considering it will convert IRay shaders. I thought IRay would kill Reality off, but better resluts plus ATI users may sustain it. Some of the Luxrender 1.5 renders are very impresive, so I will be curious to see what we can do with Reality. I hope HDRIs are handled better (I really hated how I could not just click and load the Skies of Reality series). And back to network redering, I do al ot ofm ym work on a laptop and would love an easy way to send the rendering to my gaming box, which is easy with Luxrenderr. I'm guessing with the speed increases, scenese with lrge fog objects might render in days instread of weeks, so playig with volumetrics may be a viable option.
Heh yeah I was already waiting excitedly when Lux 1.5 came out. It is great we finally have a date for R4.1 it seems like forever since it was first announced.
@argel1200 - nah, as long as Iray is CUDA only there is going to be a demand for alternatives. Reality is the kning of LuxRender bridges, so it wasn't going quietly. Plus, I think LuxRender was capable of faster CPU renders than Iray. It certainly is now.
I thought that was a cool and cheeky little update to slip in there too. In general, Reality's autoconversions have improved a lot since it first came out.
I thought the same as Argel that iray would kill off Reality which is why I finally started to learn it. The nice thing about iray is one can work using Reality experience. I was one that was miffed at the repeated delays, but it is finally here. Now lets hope it is not too bug ridden, which sadly has plagued many Reality releases..
Ditto,
for a new user Reality 4 was a major disapointment, I don't even have it installed at the moment, I'm hoping that the bugs have been well ironed out in this release.
Sadly there was some major flaws wirh R2 as well but then again so does iray. Everytime one makes an adjustment in iray the render res starts. This seems to be taking a long time to resolve, the never resolved genesis 1 duplication error in DS & so on..
@bobvan - I hear ya. I'd basically given up on PBR while waiting for OpenCL, Lux and Reality to move along. I was using Monte Carlo GI in LightWave a lot when Iray came along and changed the game.
Working with the DS implementation of Iray is a lot simpler than working with Lux, or biased engines (at least for me), but you're right, all that Lux knowledge came in handy - not working with pure white, not going crazy with the gloss, not expecting a single light source to make quick noise free render etc.
I benched my cards in LuxMark 3 and found my 780ti scores better on all but the complex scene than my R270x, so given that I bought that for Iray, all's well that ends well :)
I am also replacing my AMD fire pro in my tower with a gtx 970 or 980 (depending on how a warranty issue may pan out). I had gone witn an AMD fire pro 2 1/.2 year ago in favor of using Reality wich at the end of the day was never needed. I bought a 24G Asus ROG laptop back in June with a GTX980m getting some fast times using iray. The draw works as well as using the on the fly features with lux since one can make adjustments in both cases. Having said that if lux will be as fast if not faster as long as it is not stupid buggy will be a real asset .I size scaled people renders for the most part. Scaling textures works better in iray in some cases, or converting some materiaIs to lux at times results with noise that never goes away. I can see myself using both engines for different needs. So far I simply apply the light diffusion to Reality mesh lights works well.
Here is a video
posted by Paolo himself and all I can say it is jaw dropping the advances, for one Reality 4.1 comes with Luxrender 1.5 already built in..
The first picture he shows of a car and inside a building the first image he shows was rendered with Luxrender 1.3.1 it has taken 2 hours to get a useable scene but there is still some noise, the second image is the same scene but with Luxrender 1.5 he cut it down to 20 minutes, the third is the same scene but with the new extra boost technology enabled the render time was cut down to 7 minutes so you get a 21x speed increase with the new Extra Boost tech..
The 4th scene is a different one and is using Open CL and the GPU and he got a useable scene in about 20 seconds but as he says a couple more minutes for a better picture.. So it is looking amazing and can't wait for next week. :)
I hope we get the option to not install LuxRender when installing Reality 4.1. I like to do those installs on my own.
I never managed to get past the registration system for 4.0. Wasted several times the cost of the program in time.
So I'll just concentrate on IRAY, I guess.
Depends on what your issue was, as all there was, was to enter your details then the order number and then the serial number and register, and well since you own 4.0 you get 4.1 for nothing..
If you look at the rundown of features at the end of the video it does mention that Luxrender 1.5 comes with Reality 4.1, I gather Paolo went that route to save time and issues some people were having, but you would have to ask Paolo why he chose that route.. To me I am not worried about that, I am more interested in the features that Reality 4.1 provides and with what I am seen I like what I am seeing even more..
I like reality 4 produced tons of nice stuff. Was just getting sick of the times. This is a thing of the past with iray and now lux..
Spheric Labs has been working on LUX Core for Carrara lately.

This brings a very usefull renderer to Carrara.
I think the best thing though is with the new Luxrender using OpenCL and the advances in Reality 4.1 owners of AMD video cards will not be left out.. But if I understand correctly and well you will have to watch the video I posted looks like that some of the advanced render speed features are Intel only.. One thing is that at the time of the video OpenCL still does not work well with Mac's but he said it is being worked on..
I'm pleased to see it here; I used it (Lux) some with blender before cycles was added, then bought it a few months ago - just before IRAY; I'm pleased to see the updates, and hope it is easier to use.
Apple wrote to Paolo after he reported (and other mac developers verified) the OpenCL tools from Apple were faulted. Apple responded it would be "fixed" but didn't specify when. It was reported before 10.10.5 but my understanding is 10.10.5 does not have this repaired set of tools from Apple yet.
Reality 4.1 has been released and the server is down. Didn't this happen with one of the anticipated releases before? Too many people trying to download at the same time?
Finally managed to d/l and install 4.1 but no success running it yet, this is just one of the errors I get "RUNTIME ERROR: LuxCoreRenderer can not render an empty scene". I'll keep heading back and tweaking settings to see if I can get any progress (did render a nice grey space where the figure should have been when I switched off acceleration). If I have any updates I'll be back. Any help and suggestions also welcome of course :)
You are not the only one with issues, as I see a few members at the official forum also reporting issues with the DAZ Studio version. Looks like I will wait and see what happens before I download.
