Scifi/Anime Uniforms

Really wondering if anyone knows of content with complex military looking uniforms. The more customizable the better.

  • I need to be able to make stuff for several factions so the more pieces of content you guys can suggest and the more customizable they are the better.

I thought about the super suit with custom textures but it looks "painted on" and military officer uniforms should not look like skin tight spandex.

Supersuit for Genesis is really your best wide bet. It can be configured a LOT, particularly if you decide to add in other bits.

But for more jacket like stuff, I like:

I don't model clothing, but I've been tempted to ask this since I have looked for clothing like the OP is inquiring about, but never found anything satisfactory...

Whats up with epaulettes (actually "passants", which is the actual strap- the epaulette is the tassle-like ornament), collars and pockets for military (or fantasy/sci-fi) outfits?

I'm really not trying to be snarky or anything, but are they are either non-existent (bodysuit uniform) or when they are there they have no depth... They almost look like an iron-on detail or a decal... Are they that hard to model?

Or at least add some loft or depth to them when they are there?

That and everything is either a skintight bodysuit or an armored exoskeleton... Like there is no happy middle ground between the two...

There are a couple out there that are of real (more or less) vintage outfits that could be mixed and matched, re-textured and whatnot... But mostly, some (unhideable or built-in) detail wrecks it for use outside its genera...

I would not classify myself as more than a casual anime viewer, but there are so many cool ideas or examples of sci-fi uniforms and clothing that every time I see one I ask myself "why isn't there something like this out there?".

Not a criticism, just wondering if it's a modeling issue, if the modelers are not into/aware of these things or a fear that it's not worth the effort because sales would be too low.

I wish there was something similar to the g-suits used by real world air-forces. Or the flight suits NASA uses. They may not make a character look sexy or cover them in cool-looking plates of armor, but they would be wonderful for real world and hard-sci-fi renders.

I don't think modeling isn't the issue.  Rather, it's making them it's making them flex/fold/not fold properly when the actual size body that they're going to be on is a complete unknown. That's always going to be an issue when modeling any "one size fits all outfit", where the PA has to make something that's going to work a wide range of body types, as the "fabric" can't both behave exactly like real cloth and at the same time be stretchy enough to fit the body shape of anything from Hiro to The Freak.  As no one knows what the customer is going to do with something, the focus has to be on what works best with the majority of cases, and also has to take into account that the best techniques used to create the right effect don't work the same way in Poser as they do in DS.  And of course, the one thing the OP specifically wanted was to be as customizable as possible  You can't ask for Vanilla and then complain that you're not getting Cherry Almond/Rocky Road swirl.

As far as the hard armor and skin-tight look... the shrink-wrap effect is something you're going to get if you rely on Auto-fit. Using the transfer utility or aftermarket products like Zev0's Fit Control takes away a lot of the curse, but most vendors assume that their customers are going to run everything in the default modes, so that's what you'll see in the promos.   For the kind of details that you're looking for, you'd be better off looking at real-world uniforms, which, by default, have to be focused more on detail-work and can be mix and matched/kit-bashed just as easily.

  • The Dynamic Uniforms for Michael 4 seem really cool, but $18 is a bit steep for an article of clothing. Think I'll make do until I can find something else.

Just give it a few weeks.  The majority of Optitex's stuff has been shuffling through the 80% sales on a fairly regular basis and we're about due for one.

  • Here's what I've got so far for a middle-era Imperial uniform. Notice the mild "plating" on the shoulder pads, remeniscent of Roman battle armor.

Probably also going to do different colors on the cloth under the arms to denote different classifications, also some rank and affiliation insignia soon.
