Can't speak for V7, but it can seem that way for G2F. For me, it's not about ethnicity, but the facial shaping - there are many actresses who look radically different, who are all white, for instance. Try comparing, say, Shawnee Smith to Linda Hamilton, Neve Campbell to Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel to Clea DuVall, Sigourney Weaver to Sarah Michelle Gellar. All very different ladies!
Yet, the majority of female characters all seem to be from the same basic template. Something unique needs to stand out about them for me to want to get them.
That is every figure from what i have seen. Based on forum posts it seems many have no idea or desire to go beyong what gets pre-loaded with content, especially with morphs and shaders. If they did, we would have far less posts about lack of iray or 3delight shader compatability and probably less purchases of addon figures.
Personally, I think it is just a matter of time before all the real potential of this new character is realized and packages to expand and manipulate the V7 come out and increase of range of new technology that will allow us artist to create new and exiting looks. I think that previous generation characters have a place in the background but even with what is now availible I'm absolutely sold.
I do think that its going to get more expensive as we all expand our toolbox of tricks but I believe G3 is going to be the standard for the next decade.
Even DAZ3d as a software package being free and making studio qaulity renders is an easy sell for budding artist and here we all are at the fore front of the revolution ...
I do think that I'll be watching certain people.. I know that we are all patiently looking forward to Zev0's G3 morph packages and I'm looking forward to more Luthbel outfits now that I own his Eldritch Seeker package.. http://www.daz3d.com/eldritch-seeker
Great stuff... I love the amount of detail put into that..
Actually the only thing that has been annoying me is the lack of G3 commitment.. today nothing new for the character.. everything was still G2 which I've stopped buying... I don't think the characters are backwards compatible yet but I'm guessing something will be in the works for that eventually..
I'm just waiting for everybody else to get on board. I love the EJ Valeria character the best so far.
Peace guys.
Still a little ways to go, but the morph came out okay, and the skin isn't horrible... Yet. I still need to do eyes, lashes, makeup and such, but I think I've got her just about done. There may be another version of the skin before I wrap up, as the current version uses the shaders to assist in getting her coloration right.
I'll post a picture here shortly.

This came up in another thread and I had to agree with you there, even after I had just bought Olympia 6 (only because of the 85% discount). There are some basic shapes I like to work from but half the fun of this hobby is creating my own characters. Just when I think I've created a nice set that will suffice for a while, I decide to start on a new one. G2F has a ton of morphing add-ons which allow for great creativity: toddler to granny, heavy or emaciated, petite to amazon. Same goes for facial morphs - the are products available to morph them as you wish and, for the slightly more skilled (more skilled than I am yet) there is Hexagon and Blender (or more expensive options for the wealthy or professionals).
It would be nice if conforming clothing would fit non-standard shapes as well as the out-of-the-box G2F, V6 or Gia, etc. but I find I need to do a lot of tweaking in Blender to fix poke through and a crumpled mesh.
Okay, I killed the render a bit early, but it's clean enough for a test. I'm thinking she looks enough different to make the grade ;)
I am prepared for the slings and arrows now ;)
That's a good way to saturate a market. Like when Home Depot, Handy Andy, and Home Quarters all decided that a partucular corner needed a store. They were right, it needed "a" store. It did not need three stores.
That sort of philosophy explains where Handy Andy and Home Quarters are today.
Wiz: Heh.
Yeah, I really need a lot of morphs to be happy with characters. With Genesis and Genesis 2, I rely heavily on the base packs of morphs, Zev0's aging morphs, and a few other things to give characters, well, character. And also POSING.
It's bad enough that people often don't bother doing much dialing in, but a lot of poses are just... dolls.
Poses are things that are easily rectified. Not only do we have a pose converter for the G2 stuff, but Pose Builder, and that'll let you grab bits you like of poses and go to town.
Assuming for a moment that you're not a masochist like me. I use prepackaged poses when required, and build my own for the narrative otherwise. Because I'm an idiot like that. I had to resculpt Rumiko to deal with some massive dental problems, but the new version looks pretty good. I'll let you guys judge.
What I do is pick the nearest approximate pose, then, in the very likely chance I'm not satisfied, I tweak further.
I LIKE having prepackaged poses just to save me a lot of work moving eeeevery little thing.
I don´t think they all look the same but they are definitely too doll-like with very pretty faces and unrealistic features for me.
In general, there are very few characters that look like real people and I find that daz original figures such as Olympia, Gia, Mei Lin, Monique.......come closest to realism.
As for V7 I´m quite content with her look. Though she´s certainly not the most realistic female figure thats for sure but I like her textures and her overall look much more than V6. Loving her so far.
After many trials, false starts, rigging issues, and a good chunk of my hair torn out...
Meet Rumiko!
I'm hoping thats going to change in the near future and I have no doubt that you have been heard loud and clear echoing across cyberspace but I think she is extremely realistic from a shape and pose aspect, now she just needs a proper skin to cover the rig and that will take a little bit of time but ... its coming. All it will take is one to break the mold and then the rest of them will suddenly realize the truth of what you are saying.
Already on it!
I quite comfortably use the same figure for diverse and unique looks, but it comes down to the care, time and effort we put in, the attention to detail, for me thats the fun of it! You dont have to sculpt it yourself in something like Zbrush (although if you have it you can), we have a massive selection of part body morphs (PBMs) sets available, "Genesis Body/Head Morphs" (sadly not had muscularity since Gn1), pretty much Zev0's entire store! and numerous other PAs. Seriously if you want that Original Character of your dreams, you wont simply use a just a premade character morph :)
People use unmodified character morphs?
Okay that was a bit of a joke, but I realized early on that my aestetics for what made a good looking character differed greatly from most people, So I dial-spun... a lot. Eventually my needs got specific and my skills good enough that I started tweaking in a modeler. Now I'm making whole character morphs in blender, but when it comes down to it, there's very little that I couldnt do with dial-spinning, the main benefit is consolidation (also Eyelids, there are a distinct lack of Eyelid morphs)

All I can say is thank God that Eva 7 came along in time to smash this "all the characters look alike" whining.
Be nice to have a Monique, Mei-Lin or even Joanie for Genesis 3.
LOL, my thought too.
I'm really not liking most of the characters that are coming out for V7. To me they appear as either bulimic supermodels, ageing actresses at the end of their careers destined to play evil queens, or just plain creepy.
I think FWSA Bonnie has been the only one I've even vaguely considered so far.
Does the V7 model naturally lend itself more to older, waif-like women or something?
For me, the promo art does not flatter many characters I'm seeing. I don't know if it is IRAY or what, but characters look flat with odd makeup.
The good news is that I just found an example of the type of skins that I want to see DAZ3D selling. Eloyse by Tempesta3d -- the only thing that sucks is that since its not sold on this website, I'll have to manually install all the Rendo files but its worth it since nobody here wants to make the type of highly detailed characters I want to purchase...
I have a Japanese character waiting for promos and accessories, and after that I'll be working on another Japanese with scarred skin, an Indian woman, and a horde of others. I have one with a Hispanic cast to her that I could move up the queue.as well.
There are a bunch of men too, but they'll have to wait until G3M arrives on scene. With a tad bit of luck, the mapping will be enough similar that I can use some of the stuff I already have.
I think that at this point in time the only thing that'd convince me to make the step up to G3 would be a Thorne-style G3F character like Ysabeau (because I love the cute big-lipped, big-eyes elf look). Can't see that happening for quite a while yet though.
Does anyone know how well Ysabeau sold? I know they're pulling all the character lines that don't sell well, but I hope they don't do that for Ysabeau because they barely gave her a chance before dropping the G3 upgrade on us.
Maybe not as a "7" base figure, but nothing stops PAs to release a character along those lines. I would totally love one too, btw ;)
Hmm what (perking up). You just got my attention (in a good way).
yes, the one on the right, not FW Eve.
As you also said about your other figure, I'm not at all happy with my work on the jaw-line, chin, or the nose. It is simply as close as the dials will allow. All one-hundred-and-forty-two of them plus xyz scaling of individual bones..
When I look for characters, there are two areas I look at primarily.. the mouth and the eyes. If you strip away the cosmetics, there seems to be a very common lip/mouth shape used amongst a huge range of models. When I can afford to buy a character, the first thing I do, is dial in a set of lip and mouth shapes to drag them away from this initial look, and then drop that preset into my library under the character's name.
There are a lot of good characters out there, that just need a bit of tweaking to turn them into something extra. Sometimes, you just have to see past what is in the promo shots, and imagine what you can turn it into. Quite often I browse the shop with a face shape in mind, it helps to guide my choices.
