Show Us Your Iray Renders. Please.
Only if it's high quality grain...preferrbly at least 25 yrs old, single malt...
...single malt or blend?
The longest render time I endured was 16.5 hours for a scene done in 3DL with UE. Where I live we have been experiencing an uncharacteristically hot summer so ambient air temps are high resulting in higher than usual core temps (+10° to +12° C) when rendering. Not about to let my system cook at near 70° C for that long.
...and my scenes tend to be on the "heavy" side poly and texture wise.
As to grain fitters, anyone know of a source that doesn't cost? Short on funds right now. I know that Reality/Lux had actual film quality settings, Iray doesn't.
For most outdoor work I used Kodachrome 64 because of the slightly richer colour balance so, for most of my outdoor daytime scenes I have the tone mapping set ISO 64 with a 1.2 value on the saturation channel.
G'MIC for GIMP has a real nice set of film profiles...but I'm not sure if they are just color profiles or include grain.
All this talk of grain got me thinking.
So I started up an image with a lot of grain already in it. Then I realized it really wasn't enough, so added more grain in post. I think the results speak for itself.
Before you do too much more of that, try a free demo of a professional photo resizer program, like the one from On1. Photographers use these to make those big canvas portraits. Even a digital 4x5 Hasselblad doesn't have the resolutions you're going after. These programs use some pretty sophisticated techniques to resample nearby pixels to diminish noise -- I mean grain, I mean... I don't know what I mean!
If the demo works for you, much better than 1-1/2 day renders.
If it's not wanted...it's noise.
...nice. More partial to the "peaty" stuff here.
@Gedd "I recommend all artists to look at software like OnOne, Snapseed/Nik, Filter Forge, etc.. for what they can do to take our art to the next level"
FWIW, my experience has been that you can stop at OnOne Perfect PhotoSuite. Much better integrated than, and just as capable as, the Google (ex Nik) suite.
@Tobor
We'll have to gently disagree (slightly). Having been a photographer since the late 60's, grain was the last thing I wanted in a photo. 400 film was a last resort when shooting auto racing on less than optimal days. Digital noise, at least fro a camera is not an aberration but is also a physical property of the medium, that being the chip.
Nevertheless, I think I (finally) understand what the discussion has been about, at least if the issue is unconverged pixels. I didn't get it at first becuase I couldn't see why a really "grainy" image could be considered done, finished, desireable, etc. My render lose that kind of "noise" within 100 -200 iterations or less.
The again some sample renders where people see "grain" I don't see any "unconverged pixels at the "clicked" size.
...sure about Snapspeed/NIK? When I tried to link to any information on their site, I was redirected to a Google Snapspeed help page.
Clicking the Buy Snapspeed Desktop link took me to a page that said "an error has occurred".
Did a bit more digging and found this article:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2013/03/14/google-cans-snapseed-desktop-promises-mobile-apps-will-remain
That's the Ninive model, with extensive changes to the face, and tweaked Larian skin. (I darkened the eyebrows... ended up bigger than intended, but whatever).
Among the many challenges along the way, the conforming dress I was originally going to use ended up looking TERRIBLE and just... really took away from the image. SIGH.
So I used a dynamic dress, the Hanoi freebie from Optitex. Took a bunch of flaming hoops to get it to drape right. Used the base Hanoi texture that came with it, converted it to red silk.
Yes, you might not be able to get NIK or Snapseed anymore. Possibly through Amazon... There is a lot of overlap between it and OnOne but there are some differences and the workflows are different so some people like one for some things, the other for others. For instance, at least at one time Nik's 'Silver Efex' for doing a grayscale was considered better then OnOne's, but OnOne has improved theirs since so... Mostly I think it's the different workflows at this point, they just work different. Of course Filter Forge is in it's own class, totally different then other post production software.
It will slow your renders down. Just turn it off when yo uuse DS and turn it back on for gaming. It is a simple checkbox in the NVIDIA control panel. It is more than that only if you are also using SLI to provide surround video, which isn't needed on cards after the 600 series (IIRC).
My favorite Grain
Now we're talking...I think I need to 'sample' that for posterity's sake. Digital preservation and all...
This is Keiko with DG's Toon shaders for iray. I stopped it just under 2 hours (had seemed 'stuck' for a long long time). UHT Hair shader by Slosh. Scene only.
...interesting it was Google who killed it. I would have expected such from the likes of MS (which bought then killed TrueSpace), but Google?
Then again they did sell off Sketchup and now you can only get a limited demo version for free.
Snapseed is dead, but you can still buy the Nik Collection from Google. Oddly you need to Google "Google Nik" or similar to find it fast.
Development on the Nik suite does seem to be dead. I have the suite and OnOne Perfect Photo 9.5 and feel the OnOne surpassed the Nik Suite in integration and result (arguably perhaps) at version 8 of the Perfect Suite.
FWIW as far as I know the Free version of Sketchup isn't any more limited than the free version ever was.
The NIK Collection home page describes all of the parts of their suite, and yes they haven't updated in a while but I still use the software. The YouTube channel have some good tutorials which show how the software works and what it's capabilities are
OnOne has a good collection of videos also, and they have the one item, the PerfectEffects available free on the home page as a teaser for the suite. OnOne can be bought on sale at around $79-$99 often if one waits and watches.
Finally got my new replacement card. Freaked me out at first because the computer went black in the beginning but I think it may have been NVIDIA setting things up. I had to cold boot it to get it out of it's ... whatever it was doing... sent me to my BIOS for some reason. I clicked through and saved and booted into Windows... no issues as of yet. Even rendered out my old Environ that I built a while back that was supposedly causing all the crashes that led up to my discovery that it was the card and not my creation that was doing it all the while. So this is Dusk, my Bruno maps on him and the mustache I made in ZBrush (I REALLY wish I would have saved these settings because I really like how this renders out and hate all my attempts after that
... Nothing special with the lighting or anything just a render....
So happy you got it all sorted out, Richard. Yay!
...I went there for the free version and ended up with a 30 day trial of the pro version for some reason.
Hobgoblin about to have a very bad day.
After 30 days the trial will revert to the Free version. The different is primairly the Layout capability. I do frequently use Sketchup for woodworking design and planning. The free 2015 version seems to be more than sufficient for needs up to building desing and layout. To be honest, I do get the feeling that Trimble may have a plan to ultimately eliminate or cripple the free version.
The older versions still work, but they won't 'connect' to the warehouse any longer...that means you'll need to manually download anything you want to grab...but that's what I've always done, anyway, because running SU in WINE made for a flaky connection and more often than not, the need to manually download an item, after several tries.
I like pulling old gaming sets into Iray. This one is Silent Hill 2.
I was a little surprised to see a lack of webbed hands/fin accessories for any of the more recent items. There's a few things that are ok, and Michael 4 GIllman, but... it seemed weird, particularly with the creature collection HAVING aquatic/amphibious heads.
Ah well.
A test render for my new Koala model. I like how the fur looks with IRay as well. 25 minutes to complete.
ADORABLE Alex. So the iRay update is about ready then?
