Over the years I have tried running Daz Studio on Mac's and due to various problems along the way I have always gone back to running it on the Windows PC that I kept around specifically for that purpose. Recently I acquired a new Mac Studio with an M1 Ultra processor (64 GB RAM) and decided to give it a try again. Everything has been going pretty much okay so far, though I am not using CMS at this time because postgresql won't start. It worked after I first installed the software but when I moved all of my content to an external drive, along with the CMS data files, it stopped working. I'm sure it's a configuration file problem but I just haven't spent the time to track it down and fix it. Obviously for Iray renders I'm using the CPUs rather than Nvidia GPUs but as far as I can tell that's working fine and is as fast, if not faster, than the ancient Nvidia graphics card in my old PC.
Your problem may be that your content is on an external drive. I have a Mac Studio and did a fresh install of DAZStudio into the default locations, using a second DAZ account so that I installed just the basics without any purchased content. That went fine. I then told DIM & DAZStudio to use the "Backups" and "My DAZ 3D Library" folders located on external SSDs, and when I started them they saw all of my content. The problem came when I tried to download and install DAZStudio Public Build, as well as any plug-ins or utilities. When installing those I'd get the pop-up to enter my password, which seemed to work okay, but then the installation failed. The helper log said that it was unable to open the zip files in my Downloads directory, even though it had opened content zips just fine.
After trying many different things I hit on copying the software-associated zip files into the Downloads folder in the default location, /Users/Shared/DAZ 3D/InstallManager/Downloads , then telling DIM to find my downloads there. The software-associated products showed up as ready to install, and installed without incident. I pointed DIM back to the external location and was able to install other products as well.
I don't know why DAZ doesn't install software from external drives. You might think that this was something Mac-related, but after finding my solution I found that a Windows user with a similar problem came up with the same trick: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/7238591/#Comment_7238591
If you want to move a directory onto another device, just leave a soft (symbolic) link at the old location pointing to the new. See the man page "ln -s" for details.
Wow. I found this thread looking for hope about my Mac situation and it's not looking good...
I have a MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM running Catalina. I have an external drive attached where I keep new purchases because my 1TB internal drive was filling up. (Hey, I've been using DS and Poser since they were first released!) I've been chugging along pretty well until the release of the G9 line of characters. Now I find stuff not working. Characters don't load properly. Uilities meant to transfer character shapes don't work. The utilities for converting G8 hair to G9 don't work. I have an ongoing Bug Report open with DAZ but I haven't heard back in months. All of my G9 products are installed on my external drive. G8 products installed on external drive work fine.
I'd like to know if anyone has G9 working on an M1 Mac. Because I'd still rather use a Mac than switch to a Windows PC. But if that's the way it's gotta be, I'll accept that.
Works fine, M1 Ultra Sonoma latest update. G9 figure wearing a G8 dress (using standard converter popup) and G9 shoes. You MUST stop your browsers before starting Daz3D, the two internal systems interfere.
I have a Mac and for years I have had all of my content on an external hard drive with no problems.
So your saying you should not use any internet browser while running Daz studio on an M series chip mac? does anyone else have this experience? I would find that to be a major pain in the arse given the lack of a decent catalog system in DS. I am getting a new G4 macbook and am hoping to to do filiment renders and animation on it.
well, I got my new mac with a M4 chip. I managed to get the daz 2025 working on it prety good. I wanted it for the filiment and it works fine. my problem now is many of my plugins that I have bought over the years have a requirement that version 4.5 should be installed and I can not see it anywhere in in the DIM. I imagine I am just missing it but its very frustrating!
of course I realize we are way past 4.5 but I cannot see any standard install of daz studio in the dim
in the installed products tab i can find the daz studio public build Alpha in a seporate sub window above the product window. However in the ready to download tab there are no soft wares ready to download
I will ad some screen shots in the hope that someone can help me figure where I have gone wrong.
As usual any and all help much appreciated!
@Chakradude Congrats on successfully installing Daz Studio 2025 (6.25.2025.x) on your Mac. As you realized, most older plug-ins will not yet work until the PA (developer) re-writes the code.
If you want to run the plug-ins in the latest General Release for Mac, it's Daz Studio 4.24.0.3
In Daz Install Manager (DIM), under "Ready to Download" tab, it looks like your have a lot of results showing for your Search filter phrase, "Daz Studio".
Try changing your Search phrase to "Daz Studio 4." (without quotes).
If you can't find it there, then open your web browser and go to your Account page:
https://www.daz3d.com/customer/account
Then click on your "Product Library" button. Wait for it to load, and search for:
Daz Studio 4.x Pro
Click the single result, and you will then see a Download button for Mac & Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) versions of Daz Studio.
thanks much Robertswww I will check it out!
Thanks for your help. I have found the installer on the website for Daz studio. after a few aborted attempts I got the intaller downloaded. I had to change settings to get mac os to let me open the installer but I got it open. However when I was clicking through the installer I got to the point where this window came up " the directory /Applications/Daz3D is not writable by the current user.
Obviously this is a permissions issue but I have not been doing to much technical stuff on a mac for years... anyone got an idea for how to deal with this?
Thanks in advance!
Try this to fix your file Permissions on Mac...
1st Option:
Rt-Click (or Ctrl-click) on the file (app name, ex. Daz 3D in your Applications folder) and select: Get Info
Scroll down to the bottom of the info box and open the twirly arrow for: Sharing & Permissions
It should say: Read & Write, if not, you can click on the permission (Privilege) to change it.
If the 1st Option doesnt, work, try this 2nd Option:
Go to System Settings (or System Preferences)-->Privacy & Security, Click on the Privacy tab (or view the Privacy section on the top-right). On the left column (or from the list on the right depending on your macOS version), click on "Full Disk Access".
On the right column, make sure DAZ 3D, DAZ3DIM (Install Manager), and DAZ3DIMHelper (DIM Helper) are in the list and have the box checked or switch enabled for Full Disk Access. If it isn't checked/enabled, then click on the padlock icon at the bottom-left of the window and enter your admin password.
If they are not in the list, then click on the small + icon (at the bottom of the list) to manually add them.
Thanks Robertswww! I got it working after looking at your points and recalling permission issues from years ago. basically I kept giving folders permission until it worked. Great working on Daz studio on a mac again!
