THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
No it doesn't say to use Poser scale in the tutorial video and the screen resolution is too low to read what scale they're using. They might want too add a caption to the export/import part of the tutorial to explain that even though it's being used in Daz Studio it uses Poser Scale. People who don't have DressShop would have no reason to expect the difference in scale.
Hope it works ghast... I watched the hair video and it looks to me like it says 900 in the DAZ scale... Hopefully the Poser scale will work. (fingers crossed) .. Have fun.. I'm off to b-biezzzzzzzzzzzz :)
Poser seems to import at the right scale but not the right position. I have to send the hair to Hexagon, reposition it and then send it back to Daz.
My initial impressions of the program:
The interface is terrible. It feels like you're using a shareware program written for Windows 95. It could really stand some improvements. For example the hair objects are white, when you cut a section it is also white. Why not have the different meshes be different colours, all soft pastels so you can actually see the section you have cut from the source mesh.
The lasso tool is very clunky sometimes it can select parts of the mesh you didn't want it to.
The mesh doesn't export with opacity maps so it looks like it's up to you to make your own. The UV map is a MESS. Polygons are stretched and distorted so making your own texture maps is going to be problematic.
The mesh is a tris mesh so it won't subdivide nicely. It is also very VERY low poly. It'll make some okay game meshes or hair for background characters but you're not going to want to use it for any closeups.
It would be handy to have a right click menu with options like "select all" or "select part" instead of having to pop over to the cut tab and use the lasso tool.
The meshes have no skullcap with them so you'll need to make your own.
You are going to need a vertex modeller to finish your mesh up. You're going to find once you've exported it and actually applied it to a genesis figure things aren't how you thought they were going to be. It would be nice if in addition to Genesis Male, Female, and Kid you had the option to just model the hair on the Genesis base figure. So be prepared to do some extra modelling.
The Undo function does not work.
There does not appear to be any option to flip part of the mesh. If you want the part on the other side of the head, well sucks to be you because it is where it is. If you want top copy part of the hair on the right side and put it on the left side, well you can't. If you want part of the front on the back, nope not gonna happen.
You must start your project with a reference photo. If you just want to start working free form you're gonna have to stick some sort of photo in there because the software won't let you continue until you do.
You can only make shoulder length hair. No elegant flowing hime cuts for you.
It is an extremely limited piece of software so don't expect a lot out of it.
HOWEVER!
It's only $12 right now and honestly despite all it's bugs and limitations $12 bucks is pretty cheap for a bunch of low poly hair meshes that you can mish mash together. It is kind of fun to chop away at the hair and see what sort of weird styles you can come up with and if you view the mesh it exports as a starting point rather than an end destination it actually is a pretty useful tool for creating hair. At $12 it's definitely worth every penny and hopefully they'll address some of the limitations and problems in future updates. You're not going to get photorealistic results out of it but you might get some neat toon hair.
All things considered I have no regrets getting it while it was on sale.
Well here's my first experiment with the software. The textures are garbage so I'll have to paint my own later and I'll need to make a skullcap so the side of the head can be shaved, but it's a fun, punky little do
Playing with the textures a bit more using the Layer Image Editor. They're starting to come out a little better but still pretty rubbish.
There are patches where it comes out looking like woodgrain.
I think the only way to really fix it would be if I re-uvmap the entire mesh and then just paint my own proper texture map rather than trying to fudge something decent out of what its texture capabilities give you.
Now THERE we go. I redid the UV Maps and even using the crappy texture maps that come with it the results are 100 times better. No more woodgrain hair. When I hand make my own texture maps it should be perfect.
It's a LOT of work, but still, for $12 I'd recommend it provided you have the skills and the tools to redo the UV maps and make your own texture maps. At full price though.... I think I'd be looking at "Look At My Hair" which is only $10 more.
oh.. that looks like a fun do Ghast... everything you said about Hair Shop... ditto for the Dress Shop... but for 12 bucks... it's a good starting point for clothes too ;)
I look forward to seeing what else you come up with ;)
Thanks. It'll look even better with proper texture maps and the skull cap textured.
Working on the texture maps tonight.
If you don't know Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin'.
Can hair shop do long hair or just short hair?
haven't got these products myself but here is the link to the pdf manual of hairshop on the creators http://www.abalonellc.com/index.html website http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/yhst-48396527764316/HairShop1.0.pdf
it's basicly the same as the videos but in written format plus there are larger more clearer screen shots than what you see in the videos
and on this page http://www.abalonellc.com/dressshop2.html there are text pdf versions of the dress shop videos as well as some pics of stuff others have made
Nothing past shoulder length unfortunately.
Thanks Angel.. I bought dress shop... read all those and looked at samples. I've started a DRESS SHOP Gallery thread.. I'm hoping people will put their renders there so they are all in one place.. ; http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/51257/
Maybe Ghastly will start a HAIR SHOP Gallery Thread??? hint hint.. winks
that's a GREAT haircut Ghastly... ;)
My first dress. Very very simple. My only problem is understand how cut back without cut breast.
oo that's lovely gilikshe... please post it on the thread i started for DRESS SHOP GALLERY renders... http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/51257/
I think the answer to cutting only the front is to split the dress down the sides and hide the back before you make your cut. I've not tried it yet.. but it makes sense.. lol.. You can let me know if it works ;)
Thank you for sharing!

that's what I saw what you have to do in one of the tutorials was in the advanced one with the guy's suite/vest thing I debated about this and the hair program to long so missed out on the deal but it is a good thing you started this thread might help me to decide next time if it is right for me like most of us I guess would like to create my own clothing and hair and other stuff so be interesting to see what you can and can't do with this as stuff I'd like to do for myself include lingerie, swimwear, fantasy and sexy clothing for my renders that can't find or not exactly what I'm after
If you select dress (yellow highlight) and cut, it will only cut dress but no hysterectomy

I think his problem is the same one I am having in trying to learn dress shop. I turn the figure around, select the dress (turns yellow) and make the cut down the back. BUT the same cut appears on the front of the dress as well when I only want a low cut back without changing the front.
Edited to add: OK I figured out I can cut just the back if I first cut the dress vertically into 2 parts. But then how do I put the 2 parts (front and back) together as one mesh after I make the back cut?
Thanks for any help.
Charlie

Not sure what you mean by "hysterectomy"???
I managed to cut the front from the back and make a lower neckline in the front and raise the hemline... I posted it on the DRESS SHOP 2 Gallery Thread... http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/51257/#748752 It's not too bad... but I need more time to figure out how to join the seams back up after I'm done editing... I'll play more ;)

Here's a video that shows you how to separate front and back of a garment:

I have watched that video NUMEROUS time Laslo.. It does not show how to put the back and front back together once the front has been cut. I am having a problem with the seams matching up once they are on Genesis in DAZ. I am posting some samples so you can see what I mean.. one moment please.
please see.. http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/51257/#748805 for my progress so far... I'm working on the samples for you now Laslo :)

It is actually easy. You make items visible/invisible via the Parts Library by checking/unchecking visibility buttons.
Wow!
ok.. Here are my samples.. I think you can see what I mean... Not sure if it can be fixed in Dress Shop or I will have to take it into Hexagon to fix... The program is a good starting place... I am a sewer... so I know how the seams should go together... Just not sure how to do it in Dress Shop... I want to get out a needle and thread.. LOL
Do you have reverse deformations checked when using transfer utility?
checking... not sure what that is... let me look.. brb :)
