If you need someone to chase your pirates the HMS Victory makes for a decent background ship - if you don't mind taking the time to convert it to Iray. I wouldn't use it for close-ups though, as the mats are a little on the low res side.

Or just render with really heavy depth of field

technically this is the hms victory

(the ropes that are in focus are some high res cylinders that i positioned to match what was already there)

THE ROPE is what got me.

  • A pirate with a 3-deck ship of the line is rather overkill. (HMS Victory was/is a 104-gun (first rate) dreadnought.)
A fifth or sixth-rate Frigate would be a big ship for a pirate, and the British Royal Navy frigates would be pretty much 1-deck ships (~30-40 guns).

You don't want a ship that can stand in the line of battle. You want light and fast, to outsail the fat merchant ships.

More guns = less tonnage to store booty, more likely to blow up your fat merchantman.
    Not a good combination.

You just need to sail well enough and shoot enough guns to make the merchantmen surrender. Anything more than that is a waste for a pirate.
