Don't forget about the HMS Jawbreaker, as well...

also https://www.daz3d.com/hms-victory you'll need a pirate texture for the flag though

As far as I can tell, all the suitable candidates in the Daz store are rather old models, and have pretty low-resolution textures that are far more suitable for distant shots than close-ups. I bought Licorne, HMS Victory and Warraok (which I’ll return, because I didn’t realize until after I bought it that it’s Bryce only) recently to go with the Valentino bundle, and they were all released around the same time, as were Medusa and the other options presented here. This is a render I did using the Licorne, and you can see how janky the textures look up close:

There are a lot of pirate ships and other classic sailing ships at Rendo.  Pamawo has two as part of his "Pirates!  All Aboard!" series, BigLovePose (formerly Ironman13) has one, LukeA, mintioned above, has two, not one, and there are a bunch more.  All have their issues though.  Pamawo's are probably the most accurate in terms of rigging, but while his textures are for DS Iray, they really aren't the greatest. Personally, I've always rather liked WInnston1984's IN Wavecutter, though it has some stam-punkish elements to it.

According to this, typical pirate ships were more likely to be sloops or schooners.

I have a number of sailing ship models, but none have any sort of an interior, so any renders have to be above deck. I do realise that a full interior would be far too complex, but it would be nice if there was at least the floors and staircases in place and we could kit bash the rest. There are a handful of captain's cabins around, but nothing for the rest of the ship, for example a lower firing deck.

There is this dining room (pirate inspired, but by hiding certain objects I guess it can be used for "normal" purposes as well):

Search at Rendo for "Below Deck" - there are a couple of sets (one by Pamawo is more 'cargo hold' and the other ('BDPS' - older one, different artist) has access to the cannons)

If you need someone to chase your pirates the HMS Victory makes for a decent background ship - if you don't mind taking the time to convert it to Iray. I wouldn't use it for close-ups though, as the mats are a little on the low res side.

Licorne still scrubs up well for it's age - closeup shot, only replaced the bell shader.

PAMAWO does some period ships.  Two quick renders of using close ups of the ships.  Did close ups because wanted to crop out the cannons (not a whaler features).  The ship fittings are a little low res (blocks and ropes).

You might try the Marmara Boat. One of the things I've learned from reading pirate histories is that most pirate ships were nothing like the ones you see in movies, which are basically low-end warships with three masts and a dedicated gundeck with twenty or thirty cannon. In reality, a lot of pirates operated out of small, crappy boats: captured fishing boats and coastal traders. "Black Sam" Bellamy's "Whydah Gally", a captured slaver, was considered a fairly impressive ship by pirate standards. A ship like the "Black Pearl" from the "Pirates of the Carribbean" movies would be the stuff of pirate fantasies, like day-dreaming about owning an aircraft carrier.

Yes I have seen that one, and it is on my wish list. It is still a bit limiting in which part of the interior it represents, but still one of the few interiors outside of the captain's cabin.

You might find these shaders useful for replacing some of the low res textures: Wood Planks with Grounds (yes, there are shaders that can be used on other things, tiled and turned). Here's an example of what one of the shaders looks like rendered:

Pirates as they appear in popular culture are almost entirely fictional, so I can’t imagine the majority of people who snapped up the Valentino bundle are all that concerned with representing pirates with historical accuracy, in the same way that buyers of the recent ninja outfits probably don’t care much that “ninjas” the way we think of them never existed.

I was pretty happy with Pamawo's All Aboard bundle for making promos for the Now-Crowds Billboards - Sailing the Seven Seas and Conquistadors products.  The bundle quality is uneven but the ships are very good.

I also used the Marmara as well.

I thought they painted ship & boats with pine resins or tars.

Will those "Wood Planks with Grounds" wood shaders work well on a cylinder (such as replacement masts from some of the lower-resolution-closeup ships mentioned in this thread)?

You can pick up the Medusa cheaply with the HIT THE SEAS deals, today.

It renders up nicely.  Out of the box with only the flag changed.

Includes full sails along with the stowed ones in the render.

Or just render with really heavy depth of field

technically this is the hms victory

(the ropes that are in focus are some high res cylinders that i positioned to match what was already there)

HMS Victory has3 gun decks, But the guns are dummies. With a little tweeking the guns from Licorne Accesories will work.
