Complaint:  My network is slow.  It's having trouble resolving hosts.  The DNS system is boogered.  I thought maybe it was my local service provider's DNS system so I changed my default DNS address to a hard coded public DNS server somewhere and still name/address resolutions are slow.  Some sites (like my classical radio station) are so slow to resolve that the browser gives up and thinks my ad-blocker is to blame (I don't use one).

Perhaps this is an effect of the storms?

...yeah there has been an accelerating war against adblockers over the last couple years or so mostly by sites that have paywalls but a.so offer limited free access (usually a set number of articles to read per month), but even those that don't are now getting into the act. .

The annoying part is 99% of the adverts I see are for products or services I could never afford or would never pay for (like a new car, homeowner's insurance, or overpriced clothing) and some are just plain scams (get rich quick investment schemes, refinancing schemes, or bogus health care products).  More often than not when on a blog or forum, I have to open a link to a news story in an incognito window to bypass adblocker walls to read it (of course I am then bombarded by annoying adverts and pop ups, particularly video ones you can't turn off which take more bandwidth to run).

Non-complaint:  My network problems are gone.  I believe it was my computer! surprise  After a couple hours of intermittant testing without improvement I fired up my other computer to see if it had the same problems, but it worked fine.indecision  So, I rebooted the original computer and my problems went away.yes  Go figure. frown  Gremlins!

After I pressed render, a thought came to me.  Iray does not like sky domes for some reason, but I am not able to cancel the render as I would lose the scene if it crashes.

    Clerk: "That'll be $295..."

Customer: "But you said it was $25 a moment ago..."

Clerk: "Oh, you missed the silent nine..."

Then again I should be quite about that before I give big corporations and governments any ideas...

I almost spewed my coffee at the screen when I read this.

Hey, if we can have "silent numbers", why not have "invisible numbers?"

I just paid several thousand in my tax bill.  They could have come back and told me, "Oh, but you didn't see the hidden number "1" on the very left of your tax due amount, did you?  You actually owe $10,000 more than you paid.  I can take that payment right now over the phone if you like.  What payment method would you like to use for your balance due today?"

To which I'd say, "In cases of tea, please.  Where would you like me to send them, and is it okay if they're slightly wet?"

Complaint:  I checked my UPS status display again this morning and the battery charge has gone down to about 60%.  So, I disconnected everything and pulled out the battery and it was HOT.  Not particularly a good sign.  It's probably been trying to be charged.  It was so hot in fact that although it didn't burn my hands for the few moments that I held it, it was hot enough for me to think that it might be safer sitting out on the porch to cool down or in case it had an internal short that was going to cause it to burst into flames.  (I had that happen once in the computer room of a company I worked for.  Scary situation!) surprise

So, after I found other places to plug in all the things that had been plugged into the UPS I got back on the internet and ordered two new official #123 APC replacement batteries from Amazon.  It was time.  Couldn't be put off any longer.frown  But good news is that with one for my current UPS and one for my old UPS that's been sitting on the shelf for 3 years I'll now have two working UPS devices.  Yay! smiley  However, considering the weight of the batteries, I'm glad I'm not the FedEx driver who has to deliver them in one box.

Non-complaint:  Oh, and "yes" because I'm an Amazon Prime member, they will be delivered to me (free) by FedEx (or possibly UPS) on Wednesday, directly to my door so I won't have to lug them walking from the post office.yes

Batteries are evil.  They try to leave you stranded in a desert.  Failing that, they try to cook you to death.

Bring a reporter with you next time.  I'd do a great job for you.  "Excuse me, may I speak to the manager here?  My 1.5 million readers would like to know why this form can't be filled out online, zoom function is not available, and why nobody here will kindly provide this wonderful lady with the proper forms in 96 point font, or have seeing-eye form-filler-outers available to sit down and help her fill out the form?"

The next time you show up, they'll roll out a red carpet for you.  And make you BLT sandwiches to make up for the valuable time you spent waiting for your shuttle to drive you there.  And that's if they didn't call you a week before your birthday and ask you if you'd like to be chauffered to the DMV to update all of your paperwork!

The least they could do is call an Uber for you!   And they have the gall to call themselves "customer service".  Hah!

It would be my dumb luck to be sitting on the toilet when a tornado struck.  And then have to be rescued from under all the rubble with my drawers around my knees.  surprise  And pictures on the 11 O'clock news and Twitter.  With my name spelled correctly for a change.  blush

I got tired of seeing toe-jam fungus and bad teeth, so I started using ABP on all of my devices.  Now when I get the popup asking me to disable my adblocker, I hit the "YesScript" button, which then disables that popup and allows me to browse the content of the site almost normally, or at least without further interruptions.  The biggest drawback is that with scripting broken, many comment systems are then broken and I can't read comments.

Which is a real shame.  Some of the comments are well and truly borderline genius.  Well, except for the ones saying "First!" or the ones advertising second mortgages, "try this one weird trick", or buying timeshare properties.  Those are never very bright to begin with, and no ad-blocker can fix that!

Non-complaint:  Wheee...  my UPS batteries have arrived.  One installed and charging.  Yay!  No complaint by the hardware or software.

Complaint:  Tomorrow I must get up at the crack of dawn to prepare for early morning bus trip into the city for a day of various stops for prescriptions, bank, lunch, bloodtest, and possibly laundry if I feel ambitious.  I think I've got the bus schedule worked out.  But the return home will have to be by Uber unless I use up 7 hours in the city.  Oh, my aching feet.

I once had a package saying delivered when not.  It was shipped this February and said to have been delivered in November.

Oops!  I need to redo an image but I will show the render as soon as I can save it on my computer.

Trying to load the render I did overnight. I just noticed something odd this afternoon.  It is made with a 3Delight product which I will try to find asap to show.  I had to remove the sky dome and replace it with an HDR.

Raytheon used to make vacuum tubes and missiles. I think they still make missiles. How did they get the vacuum inside the tube when the old saying goes Nature abhors a vacuum? They put all the guts inside the tube, pumped the air out, then melted the tip of the glass envelope to seal the vacuum in and the air out. Vacuum tubes are still a thing among rock&roll guitar players, and people who only play vinyl, which is also still a thing. Some of the best vacuum tubes are made in former soviet countries.

Special tip for dealing with the DMV: What you have to remember is that for people who work at the DMV, thought = pain. Anything you do that makes them have to think about their job causes them pain. They will then revisit this pain on you tenfold. Remember this, and you may survive the trip.Unless you get eaten by goats, or hit in the head by a chicken tossed by a gorilla.

...yeah, not looking forward to spending a good part of my day at the DMV standing in line then to renew my ID card.

Always wanted a pair of tube mono blocks with crossover as I am one of those people who still has a lot of vinyl.

The Russians used vacuum tubes in the MiG Foxbat because they were resistant to EMP caused by a nuclear detonation. Makes sense why they would still produce high quality ones.

    ...I thought that was "NoScript".

Nope; it's called Yesscript2.  It's the reverse of Noscript.  Yesscript allows all scripting until somebody offends me.  Then I hit the "y" button in the browser and annoyances no more.  I use Yesscript because I don't want to stop "all" scripting.  Scripting is used to code features, some of which are good, like being able to read article comments.  Others are bad, and I just dump them on a site-by-site basis.

    In Florida they're nice.

But Florida also allows reservations and internet renewals.  Maybe your state does too.  After all, it is 2020, not 1935.

I am "meh" on tubes for music LISTENING.  I am financially and spatially allergic to vinyl.  And my CD and DVD collections are in boxes.  I stream everything from Pandora, Prime, or my file server via Plex.  Compression algorithms are not nearly as bad to me as a room crowded with records, tapes, discs, or paper books.  Did you know that cockroaches eat paper and even glue?

But I have a number of tube devices, preamps, a stomp pedal, and so forth for plugging in a guitar or violin.
