Tori HD for G8F is in the FastGrab...but it's listed as full price...shows at full price on the individual page, too.  But it shows correctly discounted in the cart!

Back in the day...  There were catalogs for basement geeks.  The "Allied Electronics Catalog", The "Edmunds Scientific Catalog" (which actually had some nice stuff 50 years ago instead of just toys),  The "Knight-Kit" catalog.  The "Heathkit" catalog.  I built most of my early HiFi gear and electronic bench gear from the KnightKit catalog.  I built the 23" Heathkit color TV, back in the '70s.  Transistors, resistors and capacitors, oh my!laugh

Why would anyone want a mail-order basement geek?devil

Complaint: Damn you Radio Shack for sucking so much in the end and going out of business...

Seriously, it's hard to be a mad scientist anymore without that damned store... I'm slowly running out of crap I bought before they closed... I'm even running out of scavenged/cannibalized parts.

I hate buying stuff from amazon because half the time it's not what it's supposed to be... which is annoying when you are trying to buy a specific shape connector or switch and the damned thing does not match the picture... plus wire that's not the friggin' right gauge too... if it says 26 AWG, that's what I want, not 22 or 24... Four lead, four color ribbon... wrong gauge and all one color... stupid.

Nobody fixes or makes stuff anymore, so all the hobbyist electronics store are all gone... Friggin Canal street in NYC used to be an inventor's dream, it was like one those ancient Keredraafi bazaars where you could find anything you were looking for... camera parts, vacuum tubes, servos, wire, motors, ancient alien artifacts, gears, army surplus first aid kits... Now it's just an endless line of Cellular phone stores and random mall shops...

Thanks to universal abuse of keywords and crappy search algorithms, it's next to impossible to find anything on the internet too... and when I do it's 10x the amount I need and not practical to buy...

When I was a kid I was poor and had to make stuff out of crap I found in the street, which was actually easier than now, because there was tons of crap on the streets of LIC... now, I'm back to scavenging crap because that's more practical than wasting time looking for stuff on the internet.

Physical stores are wonderful... you can look at things and determine if they are what you need, if they fit, nibble on them to see if they are durable... you see other things and you get ideas for other projects... I hate buying stuff on the damned internet.

That and stores trying to get in your head and tell you what you "might also want"... Yeah, because I'm looking at return springs, I must want a bbq grill or fluffy slippers... what? That's more Amazon than other places, but there are a few places that do that too...

Yes, I get that it's easy to buy stuff in general... socks, toilet seats, vibrating hello kitty accessories, colorful Hydro Flasks, silicon coated spatulas, pet catapults... yeah, it's all there, I get that if you don't have the time or shoes to go to a store, it's a huge convenience, but F_ _ _, it's annoying if you are actually trying to get something done.

    Ehgrrr... I'm done...

    Laterz.

You might want to have a look at these:

    https://www.tubedepot.com/t/tubes/power-tubes

    Dana

Thanks Dana... I checked out TubeDepot... that Nixi watch is cool... too bad it only displays two digits and is so expensive. I've wanted to make something using Nixi tubes, but they average $200 bucks per tube so, just for my own amusement, that isn't happening...

I was looking for some other stuff this morning and remembered a place I used to buy small tools from, they didn't have what I was looking for, and over time they have changed a bit from what they started out as, but since I was just there and it's fresh in my mind, I figured some of the folks here who make stuff might find it interesting to look at... sometimes they carry stuff I haven't seen before or isn't easy to find... this morning I found a modable self adhesive plastic they carry, that might be useful for certain projects.

Anyway, in case anyone is interested, here is their site... https://www.micromark.com/?_ga=2.92484765.1633810908.1583497217-307164087.1583497217

Does anyone else have this problem with not being able to delete a draft... I keep deleting drafts of posts I don't finish, I'm doing it the right way, it goes away from the text box, I make a post, it doesn't show up and then a few minutes or hours later, it's back in the text field...

Also the forum seems to randomly resurrect old posts I've made, days after they were posted... I'll click on the text box which is blank and all of a sudden it's filled with an old post I made... or sometimes it's just there when I open the page.

Well... love isn't the word I'd use... but I do have quite a few of those free flashlights that you get when you buy something...

Thats just what's lying around near the computer... not including the ones stuck to the side of the fridge (they are magnetic), all over the shop, in the basement and almost every drawer in the house.

I love the warning label on them...

It should just say... ! WARNING ! This WILL kill you!
But I'm a madman... I don't use goggles when I'm using the flashlight...

Edit... right after I posted that I found six more lying around nearby...

Yeah... I go there a lot...

They are good for cheap tools you won't need to use too frequently... or cheap power tools or hand tools you want to convert into something else.

Are you using the "gear" icon at the top right of the forum page?  However, first refresh the current page you're on and then open the "gear" to select "Delete Drafts".  I used to tear my hair out (thus my current scalp situation) trying to permanenty get rid of ill-thought out posts, until I found the "gear".  Works perfectly for me every time but you have to remember to refresh the page before you try to use the "Delete Drafts" option.

Regarding Nixie tubes.  Old gasoline pumps used to have lots of Nixie tubes.  Perhaps a trip to a junk yard?

I loaded a full outfit onto G8F.  I decided that I did not like the shoes in the scene, because it is a beach scene.  Who would wear high heals on the beach.  well now instead of wearing high heals, she is on her tip toes.   Oh I just thought of something I could have her shoes next to a chair or a beach blanket.  She had to wear shoes to go to the beach.

Complaint:  Running to catch bus.  Grrrr.. I made my once a month trip into the city yesterday.  Caught the morning bus into the city.  Had my trip all planned out including the transfer at the main hub to another bus headed to my blood test location.  But the driver on the first bus said he could take me directly there.  Nice, but he didn't know exactly where it was and I didn't have the exact address.  So, we drove around the general area couple times until I spotted it a block from where he thought I should get off.  He learned something that day.  And although I appreciated getting dropped off at the door instead of having to walk a block up one of Jamestown's steep hills 5 minutes later than my original plan would have gotten me there.  Blood testing went fine, she hit oil in my arm on the first tryyes and didn't have to poke me four times before having to move to a vein in my hands (ouch)sad  I was in and out of the testing place in 12 minutes.  And just in time to catch the next bus on the corner to go a mile up the hill to McDonalds to break my fast.  Then had to wait for another hour to catch the next bus, so I toddled over to Tim Horton's for a bavarian cream donut and hot chocolate and to pick up a half-dozen plain donuts using a coupon.  Mmm, donuts.yes  So after toddling back to the shopping center where the bus would stop and on the bench and waited.  Here's the complaint part.  The bus was early and didn't stop where the benches were but continued on another 100 feet or so and waited about 20 seconds while I was running behind it frantically waving my hands and bus pass.  Apparently that bus has no mirrors because she pulled out and left me there clutching my heart and yelling nasty profanities at her.  Attracting the attention of people wondering if I was going to drop dead on the pavement like a scene from "Dr. Zhivago".  I disappointed them all but was not going to wait yet another hour for the next bus so I toddled back to Tim Horton's where there was Internet connectivity and ordered an Uber.  So I watch my Uber app and see the car coming down the map getting closer and closer then it goes by and goes back and forth on some streets a few blocks from me all the time saying something like  "arriving in 30 seconds".  I started to think the car was on the other side of the building so I fast walked (no more running for the day) to see, but nope, not there either.  About 10 minutes later the car finally shows up at the original pickup point.  Driver said she had to get gasoline. frown  I wish I'd known, I would have continued to sit in Tim Hortons sipping hot chocolate instead of being a target for inattentive drivers in the parking lot.

However, at the end of the day I got home had all my purchases from drugstore and donut shop.  The only thing I didn't get from my list was the trip to the liquor store, wasn't open.indecision  Oh, well, I'll survive.  But no more running after a bus.enlightened

Regarding Nixie tubes.  Old gasoline pumps used to have lots of Nixie tubes.  Perhaps a trip to a junk yard?

Yup, the gear icon at the main page of the particular forum... like for example the Commons or Art Studio. Then you pick "Drafts" and then you are in "My Drafts" and you click the little blue "x" next to the post you wish to delete... the "Confirm" window opens and it asks "Are you sure you want to do that?" and you pick "Okay" or "Cancel" ... if you pick "Okay" the "My Drafts" window opens back up and the post has disappeared... if you go back to the gear icon and look at drafts, you'll see the post is gone... so if you had two, it's now one... or nought if you had one... or ninety nine if you had one hundred... unless you deleted all of them, in which case it would be zero... unless you deleted twenty five in which case it would be seventy five... unless you... never mind...

So the weird thing is that post is now gone... so I go back to the thread I deleted it from, and the text box is empty... I write something else and post it... that nonsense I just wrote (not the deleted stuff) shows up in the thread, fully posted and after it's posted for all to see the text box at the bottom is still blank, waiting for me to post more nonsense... but having expended my short attention span, I go on to something else...  so maybe a few hours later I come back and when I open that same page, that original post I deleted is sitting in the formerly blank text box mocking me.

Sometimes there are variations on that... like earlier I deleted something, wrote something different, posted that, then went to write another post and the moment I clicked on the blank, inactive text box (no blinking blue cursor) to activate it, the old deleted post showed back up...

This stinks of dark cloud magic... I think the souls of deleted posts get trapped in a limbo of cloud servers where evil cloud spirits corrupt them and send them back to haunt me.

    Or the forum software sucks...

Who knows... I often attract supernatural phenomena, so anything is possible.

Nixie tubes... I forgot about that... I'd love to visit a junkyard that would have actual old junk in it... anything for 75 miles around here is modern junk... nothing interesting or special... and nobody lets you wander around taking stuff apart... you ask them for it and they bring you whatever they deem to be worth removing... sucks with car stuff, because they sometimes remove associated parts of an assembly and want to charge you separately.

I'd have to go way upstate to somewhere, some junkyard nobody would care about or know about to find anything interesting... junkyards around here are terrible and forget about scrap yards... they crush, chop or compact everything, so nothing is salvageable... and god forbid you see something interesting, they ask a ridiculous price for something they are going to destroy... I gave up on that a while back.

My friend who collects BMW bikes goes to swap meets and antique machinery shows in the US and Germany and he finds incredible stuff... someone actually gave him a center turntable gear from an old crane... it's like four feet in diameter... he had it turned into a really cool table... it weighs a million pounds, but it looks cool.

Get up an hour later (by the modified clock) on Sunday and lose an hour of wake. Or go to bed early on Satruday. Or split the difference in some way (short Sat/short sleep/short Sun).

Or figure out how to slow down time and give yourself another 3 hours worth of sleep instead of losing 1.

Not into streaming music services because I like making my own playlist for the listening mood I am in at the time.  For classical, I have found streaming services lacking in selection.  I also have a nice classic Hi-Fi (granted hand wired/soldered transistor not tube, but also not present day "breadboard" either) with much better speakers than my computers and to listen to music while working it doesn't take up processing resources.

I still have a library of 10,000 songs for when streaming services aren't doing well.  And I keep multiple playlists on Pandora.  They change over time, so I can go back to an old one and still hear different songs than before.

From Wikipedia's article on the matter at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time#Problems_with_permanent_DST

    Problems with permanent DST

Since daylight saving time creates the illusion of the sun rising and setting one hour later on the clock, but does not add any additional daylight, the already later sunrise times under standard time are pushed an hour later on the clock with daylight saving time. Late sunrise times can become unpopular in the winter months which essentially forces workers and schoolchildren to begin the day in darkness. In 1974 following the enactment of the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Act in the United States, complaints of children going to school in the dark and working people commuting and starting their work day in pitch darkness during the winter months led to the repeal of the act in October 1974 when standard time was restored until February 23, 1975. In 1976, the United States returned to the schedule set under the Uniform Time Act of 1966. In 1971, year-round daylight time in the United Kingdom was abandoned after a 3-year experiment because of complaints about winter sunrise times. The same complaints also led to Russia abandoning DST and instituting standard time year round in 2014.

You're retired, don't have a commute, and don't need to get kids to school in the morning or home from band, swim, or karate practice in the late afternoon.  In fact, you can pretty much choose when to come and go from your home every day and don't need to plan 5 to 7 days a week to plow the fields or go to a job; things that are made easier or more difficult depending on where the sun is in the sky.

So I'm honestly curious:  What do you care the precise time of sunrise and sunset?

Edit... right after I posted that I found six more lying around nearby...

Yeah... I go there a lot...

They are good for cheap tools you won't need to use too frequently... or cheap power tools or hand tools you want to convert into something else.

I have those same LED flashlights, and in the same color too!

I have the answer for the bi-annual time shifts.  Just stop doing it.surprise  Simply make the length of hours variable.  A little bit during the day so that the sun always rises and sets at specific times and noon is always when the sun is highest.  Computerized clocks are completely capable of shortening and lengthing the hours as needed.  Much easier than tweaking the angular momentum of the Earth.enlightened Scientists can still measure their time by atom vibrations but people don't need to.cheeky

I think I lost my tv remote again.  Either that or I forgot where I put it last night when it was bed time.  or it fell off the bed after I went to sleep last night.

    Ehgrrr... I'm done...

    Laterz.

Yeah, somebody gave me one of those free flashlights too.  Buttons are horrible.angry  Light could kill.surprise

Complaint:  Remember the UPS batteries I ordered?  One went into my currently in-use unit.  The other went into a nearly identical unit that had been sitting on the shelf unplugged, batteryless and unused for three years.  At first all seemed OK, except it was odd that one of the brand new batteries (with sequential serial-numbers ...087, and ...088) was nearly depleted and needed recharging, but the other one that I placed in the long idle unit registered 100% full when first turned on.  I thought that was odd, considering that the batteries had probably been stored at the APC warehouse for the same length of time in the same environment.  Now two days later the unit starts beeping at me despite being plugged in with no load and the display screen on the unit says the battery is 100%.

So, I initiate a chat with APC technical help desk and we get down and dirty with testing, and we plug and unplug the unit, remove and reinsert the battery, press menu buttons, press reset buttons, and BINGO, the battery status suddenly reports 0% surprisesad  Now we're not even sure the unit is charging properly so we're waiting 24 hours for the unit to charge before continuing the test. Boogers.  Gremlins! angry

Edited to add:  Yay, the "Estimated run time" on the unit's display is going up.  So, yay, it seems to be charging.yes  I hope it gets to the top.indecision

    who loves the harbor freight?

Just discovered them recently.  Store on the next exit down 24 from me.  Theyr'e good for small things, but big dollar items, I think I'd stick with things like DeWalt, Kobalt, etc.  Some exceptions, though.
