Hints on determining if the weather is bad outside:

If it's daytime and you can't see outside your window, it's bad!

If it's daytime and you're not in a moving vehicle and what you see out the window is completely different that what you saw a few moments ago, it's bad!

If your window is gone, it's bad!

If you didn't move and you find yourself outside, it's bad!

If the rain is falling sideways, it's bad! surprise

..speaking of "nuts", did some research into SSDs for one of my old notebooks in which the HDD failed (still have the recovery disk) and it has an IDE, not SATA HDD so installing an SSD to replace the failed HDD is pretty much moot.  There are SSDs which are compatible, but they are smaller capacity and far more expensive then the SATA III ones currently available (even a 60 -  80 GB drive can be upwards of 165$ or more).  The reason I want an SSD is not so much the speed, but the durability as notebooks get jostled around while carried which increases the risk of drive failure.  No moving parts, less to break.

Went on eBay and found slightly newer Win7 Pro notebooks (no W10 )in my flat) with 128 - 256 GB SATA SSDs for around the same price of an IDE/PATA SSD that even have i5 or early i7 CPUs. One I am currently watching even has 12 GB of memory.  Mainly I just need one for my role play gaming sessions to put my PDF library of books as well as characters and campaign notes on, which is a a lot easier to lug around than 15 - 20 kilos of "dead tree" game books, so it doesn't have to be ultra powerful..

harpsichord sounds so different from a piano

It's the difference between  being plucked by a plectrum or being whacked by a soft mallet.

Original name for a piano is piano-forte which in Italian essentially means soft-loud, (soft-strong) which was its technical advantage over other keyboard instruments like harpsichord or clavichord.  It had a wide range of volume dynamics depending on how hard and quickly you depressed the keys.  The piano was more suitable for use in large orchestras in large halls rather than just small musical ensembles like trios, quartets or quintets in small rooms.yes

I know personally that if I were an instrument I'd rather be whacked than plucked.devil

Imagine Jerry Lee Lewis playing the harpsichord. He would destroy it in 5 minutes...

  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 41,873

..Franz Liszt and LV Beethoven would have likely as well .

The technique for playing a harpsichord come totally from the fingers and a bit from the wrist, not the arms as hitting the keys any harder does not make it louder (and most likely would just break the plectrums of the jacks).

I think it was Sir Thomas Beecham who described the harpsichord as sounding like two skeletons indulgng in carnal activity on a corrugated metal roof.

  • Found it.

If he can go back in time, why didn't he just go back to the day before he crashed and warn himself?   indecision

that was his idea, until bill touched it, the return trip broke it.

watched the last episode, poor uncle martin didnt make it home.
his nephew visited, they didnt explain his fate

was a better fate than poor Alf.

would our society really be so hostile to visitors?

I think people in general are more willing to accept alien visitors than, say, 30 years ago.  However, governments are a different story.

Too late, they've already been here and the asteroid belt is the rubble left from the last planet that pissed them off by eating their ambassador.

    CLARIONET, n.

An instrument of torture operated by a person with cotton in his ears. There are two instruments that are worse than a clarionet -- two clarionets.
