Teen Raven thoughts...

  • Raven's mouth is a bit narrow and i had to finagle the teeth/mouth a bit for Summer's morph.

I don't use the daz smiles so much after I discovered the "Unique smiles" https://www.daz3d.com/20-unique-smiles-hd-for-genesis-8-females  I seldom use any of them fully, but often little here and there. What i love about those smiles is that they have nearly all the smile types, you know what I mean? Toothy smiles, chin smiles, cheeky smiles, shy smiles, crooked smile, i'm-just-smiling-because-you-told-me-to smiles, is-there-something-in-my-teeth smiles.... :) It's a good to for smiles. There's one for guys too, really good stuff https://www.daz3d.com/20-unique-smiles-hd-for-genesis-8-males-

I have the female pack. Yep, you have to be careful with them. The one on the main promo looks psycho at its current default, but that like the others look pretty normal with tweaks. Love your personalized tweaking though.

Yes, I love the unique smiles product! No matter what I did, I couldn't make Alinah look good with any smile so she and Raven will always be sad girls lol. I haen't tried the other characters based on Raven yet. Alinah's mouth actually seems huge so I made it a bit smaller once I gave up giving her any expression beyond sad or neutral... Now I'm wondering how well Raven will mix with other characters, considering her mouth issues...

I'm aware that Clothing and Makeup make people look certain ages... That its in pose, and presentation. You can make someone look very mature or immature based on clothing, face expression, and the enviorment you have them in. Same actor as before in a different setting. This is why I make them appear to be younger then 15. Because by the time someone is done outfitting and posing a "teen" actor who is borderline 20... Due to how mature most of the hair and clothing and pose presets are. They look 30. But if they start out young looking, like.. actually young lookking, then by the time you make your typical render, they still look the part of a teen, even with makeup and a mature setting.

This is Raven? She doesn't look anything like this in any of the promos!

Is anyone noticing that DS becomes really slow with Raven? I’m not sure if it’s something else going on but my last three renders were Raven or Raven based characters and all of a sudden it takes forever to go from a textured viewport to an IRay one. It used to just take seconds with my 1080ti and now it takes minutes!

This issue did not happen with Summer. So far with Raven, Alinah and Emy. Weird. And I’m rendering Summer now and she can smile!

Nice find, thanks. Anything similar for older generations? (i still use some favorite v4 chars and i dont think i'm ok with v4 smile options out there. also what about genesis 2 and its polycount)

for G3, I think Cake One's https://www.daz3d.com/smile-delight-for-genesis-3-bundle is probably one of the best... I think they did some expressions for G2, but honestly never reallly got into G2... I stuck with mostly genesis til Genesis 3 and then jumped on G8 and never looked back :P okay, MOSTLY. There's stuff I still love for V4 and M4 that i hope to convert over one of these days... ha!

Also nice, thank you. Plenty of G3 favs, as well (though some were 3/8 crossrelease) :)

IIRC hardly any of gen4 or earlier's expressions were on dials. They wwre just about all presets which were either fully applied or not. You couldn't really blend them either. That was one of the things I most liked about GenX you could transfer the expression morphs and they came in on dials that you could adjust or mix.

Here are a couple of renders of Teen Raven 8.

This one is "out of the box" except I lowered the Translucency Weight and Duel Lobe Specular Reflectivity of her lips to make them less red and less glossy. I also lowered the Cutout Opacity of her eyelashes to 50%.

With this one I did the same except I also lowered her skin's Translucency Weight to .79.

    Next?!

    ;)

    Laurie

At least she's not a braz doll. I consider her the second realistic Teen Daz has done.

Kaylee and Josie are stylized characters along the lines of Tika and Aiko IMHO.

Content creators make what sells. They base the decisions on what to make based on actual sales. Not the few who express what they like/dislike on the forum. Saying “not another white female” like a broken record on this forum doesn’t represent the majority of consumers. Like reddit, only a few % of the community actually leave comments. Every time a white female shows up in the store, the same comments appear. But the reality is sales data is what makes decisions. Not the few on a forum. Just saying.

They only make swimsuits and white girls because they're all that sells...

Because people are only selling swimsuits and white girls.

    Vicious cycle.

I can't help but look back to the olden days when Daz's QC standards were a bit more lax on the "looks 100% photo real" and take in the sheer amount of options.

That said, I feel it was a mistake leaving Genesis.

I dont see why they try to pass her off as a teen Character. Good character yes, but hardly a teenager. Speaking of Teenagers. I'm making one now right as I am reading this thread. Far from done, but shes looking decent so far... I'm aware some of her proportions are off. I'm still making her.

    That's a 12 year old not a teenager.

Angel_Wings, with respect, but this character looks more like a child, maybe because very soft face (i don't find better words, hopefully you understand what i think). I'll also remind of "transitional age" psychological treats like those attempts of "finding yourself" that may lead to joining subcultures (punk, emo, goth etc.) that might also be reflected in character.

Anyway, i was trying to look for some "gothic youth" for comparison reference, dunno if this fits:

Thanks. I do have a child version of her... If you wannt see.

    And that's a 6 year old.

You're not posting a teen and a child.

No. What you have is a child... and younger child.

My son started high school this year......and the teens there have a huge range of looks.

Some look like they belong in grade school.....others look like full on adults, guys taller than me with full beards, tattoos and pick-up trucks......so safe to say "Teen" range of looks is HUGE!

Aye. When I was a kid, had a girl across the way who looked like a 18 year old swimsuit model when she was 12. Was sureal.

I just have sooooooooooooo many females already that it's hard to get excited about yet one more. G8F already takes forever to load....

It's tough to keep one's enthusiasm for more of the same. I've got oodles of females, and they are all starting to look alike. So, it's not like we are complaining to complain. Some of us are just burned out over the females ;)

And FWIW, I don't think she looks like a teen either. I think Teen Jane was closer in that regard. But then I don't have Jane either (for the same reasons).

I'll be honest... rather bored of new female characters who aren't creatures or filling a specific hole.

Between Daz and Rendo, my hot girl needs are basically covered twice around.

I'd kill for more near-human females who don't follow the following pattern blindly.

RawArt is good with this, though I wish his body hair patterns on say, his female werewolf were more in line with those of the male in realism. So is Marcus. While I'm not overly fond of his core body morphs, applied to less stylized females they look really good. Infact, I'd say he has the only really inhuman looking catgirl around two generations running (In G8 I tend to use Raphas alien morphs the legs X-Tooled out with Cat Lyn and Avavex's skins). I really can't think of any one else who really bothers off the top of my head outside of a couple monsters.

Gonna reiterate, Raven alone is a FANTASTIC morph, and Summer's shape is crafted to simply enhance Raven's detailed shape- reshape the eyes and lip, shorten/make the face more youthful, etc. Her morph is definitely best with Raven, since it was made to add to Raven's base. Not all my characters utilize the Daz O shape so completely, but I was very thrilled with the shape Raven's face came with and just had to work with it. :)
Sorry for blurry comp images, I just got back from two days of mountain hiking and I'm exhausted. throwing these renders in for a couple min while i take some tylenol (joints ache like an old lady, Ach!)

And chohole she looks like a teen to me, it just shows how variable teens look anywhere, everywhere.:)

Some of those look a bit creepy... but yeah, she looks... young... like a teenager. Like an actual human teenager!

    *gasp*

That said, Teen Princess Leila is still best daz teen morph. I've long ported her to G8 and she's my go-to "make 'em younger" morph.

Think you could do summer applied to some of the older charactersor even the base G8F?

Ugh, she's hideous. The eyes are REALLY bad! I guess it will be a fun challenge to make her pretty. Definitely have to use other eyes, enhance her morph and skin....

It's the makeup I guess. She's perfectly lovely.

    That said I mix everything.

Now that is some major resting B face.

So why are RSL mats showing up under Iray?

The metadata can actually allow that to happen. "Content Type" is probably set to "Preset/Materials/Hierarchical/RSL" and the "Category" probably "Default/Materials/Iray/Feminine".

There is certainly one marketing rule which say males must be ugly and females must be hot. The same thing happens in the video games.

It's not that males MUST be ugly, but they are allowed to be...and even then, often only within certain parameters.

The trope is called Bizarre Sexual Dismorphism and refers to unusual male monsters/aliens/creatures  with their hot (by human standards) female monster counterparts.

To me that has always seems kind of fan servicy.   I tend to steer clear of that trope, and reverse it when I can.

One of the reasons I loved Genesis... there was no real excuse for it.

Frankly. I'm still of the opinion that switching from Genesis to Genesis 2 was a terrible mistake that rewound the single most signifigant improvement of the Genesis series.

I know making clothing items look good was challenging, but the easiest way to deal with that would have simply been to make it so people could create clothes for "Genesis Male" and "Genesis Female" with cross compatability simply being gravy.

I actually had to pass on some earlier G8F white female teens because of timing/budget.  Was still a gap for me.  I wasn't too sure about this one until I saw forum members post sample pics of various sorts in this thread.  As always, thank you to everyone who participates in these threads, both positively and negatively. Helps me make decisions.

On the topic of repitition, cliches, and tropes - I am reminded of the quote credited to Yogi Berra, "No one goes there anymore.  It is too crowded."

Teen Raven 8...  Well, this character would take some work.  I tweaked the skin so much, I barely remember what all I did.  I think I dropped the Diffuse Overlay Weight down 0.8 for the makeup, Translucency down to .25, Bump down to 3.5, plus fiddled endlessly with the eyes to try and get the sclera to not be brown (never worked unless I cleared the Base Color Map).  I don't think the skin is bad overall, it just takes some fine tuning to make it look decent.  And no, that morph doesn't look like a teen.  She looks early to mid twenties to me.  I think that might come down to the detail on the skin, though.  The right texture would probably change that.

    The smile still looks strange

  • Everyone smiles differently... have you tried the Unique smiles HD set? I think they're fantastic for matching up with different face shapes. I started being curious about smiles because someone when I was travelling once told me it was rude to smile and show teeth, so ladies would practice different smiles... it was weird to me but also interesting. :) I personally have a kind of crooked smile, because i chipped a side eye tooth when I was younger and was oddly self concious about it, so I'd smile less on that side to kind of cover it... and here in Asia the "cutesy small slightly pouty/catty smile" is popular (small mouths, small lips, opposite of the US trend for plump lips big smiles?) and some people smile soooo big you see the top of the gum line and all the teeth.... so interesting really. :P taht's why its awesome to have all kidns of smile morphs. i go a bit mad collecting them. And if I still don't get the right smile, I use the facial rig to tweak :D

  • JonnyRayJonnyRay Posts: 1,744

A bit off topic, but the problem I see with most smile morphs is they lack the proper movement of the cheeks and eyes. Basically, they aren't aligned with a "Duchenne Smile" and so, because we're wired to be keenly aware of facial expressions, they feel fake to us.

I'm thinking that was probably done to make her look younger. However, IRL, by the time someone gets that old there's really no disparity between the size of the head and body anymore like there is in younger children, especially in females, who tend to mature at a younger age than males. By the time I was 12, I was relatively the same height and weight as I was at 18 and 20....
