I've had no luck at all using rendered HDRI's but have used photo ones quite successfully particularly the ones from HDRI haven.
I feel ya! Though lighting and shadows greatly reduce compositing outdoor scenes (an advantage) specially in this case. I guess it depends on the content creator. I mean I like Alessandro_AM but not this particular HDRI of his. There are other environments in his vendor portfolio worth trying.
I'm not sure I would blame the HDRI. If you look at the promo images, the "near field" portions look pretty crisp while the background areas look like they DOF or a hze effect applied.

He may have applied some PS filters to make it look crisp or so. I read somewhere they do that with promo images. My renders are less blurry near field and very blurry further away (background). I didn't even apply DOF. I rotated the dome around my character, and move my character near and far but the same blurriness exist.
