Carrara Rain Storm - Free to Carrara Users - beta released (updated)

edited December 2018 in Carrara Discussion

Hi, been working on this for a while. Just a simple rain storm with splashes and puddles. Would be ideal to use with Diomede's free trees.

EDIT: Please find the beta files attached to this post. To use rename the files from txt files to car files.

EDIT 2: Have uploaded new Storm Creek with Shaders removed (after  feedback)  - apologies

Edit 3: The Rain file by itself is the 2.97 mb file (hopefully the one after the pdf)

Feel free to fine tune them or offer suggestions etc. Commercial renders fine of course. Any problems please let me know.

I didn't include lightening etc. Maybe later ;)

Instructions for use in the next post or in the PDF attached to this post.

    INSTRUCTIONS;

Download scenes from the first post and change the file types from txt to car.

The following use the sample scene (note: scene already has rain in it - just delete the part that says RainGroupStormBeta in the isntances list on the right  it if you want to load it up yourself)

STEP 1) Set up your scene first with cameras etc

    No automatic alt text available.

STEP 2) Drag or import The Carrara Rain file - if dragging it drop it on Scene so it doesnt become a child of anything yet

Then select your Scene's Camera 1, hold down ctrl and select the Rain Camera. Ctrl K will bring up the alignment window. Align on all three axxii.

    No automatic alt text available.

SETP 3) Check your camera 1's rotation and make the Rain Camera's rotation the same

    No automatic alt text available.

SETP 4) Drag the rain group to make it a child of your Camera 1

    No automatic alt text available.

STEP 5)  Fine tune the rain by selection the Rain Plane and using the morphs

    No automatic alt text available.

STEP 6) Furher fine tune the rain by selecting Rain 1 and using the morphs

    Image may contain: text

STEP 7) For more rain, make this visable

    No automatic alt text available.

STEP 8) To make the rain brighter select the lights in each rain group and make them brighter.

STEP 9) One everything is setup then you can move the Camera 1 around and the rain will follow.

    Image may contain: text

    THE SPLASHES AND PUDDLES FILE

The splashes and puddles are surface replicated on 'ground'

Double click the Surface Replicator and in the room that opens up, change 'ground' to the object you want the splashes etc replicated on.

The splashes have morphs to make them bigger.

You can make them brighter by tuinng the Splashes and Puddles Light.

To make the ground they sit on appear to be wet, dont forget to add reflection in its shader.

NB: the puddles look a bit odinary.

Hi Andrew... WOW... thank you. Looking forward to it... I downloaded Diomede's trees already to put away till the New Year. Very tight on time right now, but you and Dio are making for a very Happy Christmas as not much left in the budget for models at the moment.

Looks great - I assume it isn't animated?

Andrew, this rain scene is a great idea.  Wonderful work.  Thank you in advance.

As a side note, during various sales, I picked up a Bryce inclement weather product by the masterful David Brinnen and Horo with the intentions of trying to get them to work in Carrara, or at least transfer what could be transferred, but that project is still buried on my to do list.

I'd love to try to combine some of the Bryce content (HDRI,...) with your rain scene.  Can't share it, of couse.

  • Awesome. looking forward to it!

Thanks so much everyone, lovely to have such positive feedback!

I've uploaded the beta files in the first post. They are free to use for carrara users - feel free to fine tune them.

PhilW - the rain itself is easly animatable using the supplied morphs - the splashes I havent had enough time to look at how to animate them.

Maybe a noise distribution shader in the surface replicator that itself is animated? Not sure as I havent had a chance to experiment with that.

Please let me know if you have any problems, suggestions or questions.

    thanks again

    regards from oz :)

    Another FYI:
The new "stormcreekwithshaders" file crashes my Carrara 8.5.1.19 Pro app (Mac version) as it begins to load. The original file "CarraraStormCreek" loaded OK, but prompted for 3 or 4 shaders. The other two files load OK.

I can't load the StomCreek file.  Windows 10.

Unfortunately, the only message that I get is "An error occurred while executing Open...."  Not very helpful for diagnosing the problem.  sad

The rain file and the splashes file both open.  They look great.  yesyes

I'll take that file down and check it when I get back on my computer!

I opened the new version 2 file no problems... the first version did crash on drag and drop from the tab but loaded ok on Open File..

No probs here with any of them since you uploaded the new V2..

Classic Stezza :) Love that logo on the plane !

Thanks for the feedback on the file - not sure what is going on there....

    Andrew,

You took down "RainGroupStormBeta" instead of "stormcreekwithshaders" (the one that was crashing).

    ah thanks, will fix, apologies!!

Stezza, that image is terrific. The raindrop splashes on the wingtips are just right.

There's interesting hair shader that makes a primitive plant (see the dark green folage in image) that comes in the Storm Creek scene

I've updated the Storm Creek File - reposted it in the first post - should work now as I've taken the shaders out.
