The new Mei Lin 8 figure is sided at image right.
Here's my render of Mei Lin :)
could swear she is made from aiko's dna, but the feet are more realistic, i.e. not manga-like ... all-in-all ... previous mei lins looked more sophisticated and real, that is to say, less mangaish or childish. i would have preferred something in that old tradition of mei lin, instead of a baby-face aiko.
I preferred the lower translucency option (pictured here), but even with the default I didn't notice it being quite so red. Must be a difference in lighting I guess.
She definitely looks younger... kind of funny how most other female gen 8 characters with names from previous generations people complained that they looked older.
Also an example swapping the skins. Just swapped the skin type surfaces, left out eyes, mouth, and nails in the example, but I think the skin was where people wanted to see the differences.

Perhaps so, but not everyone has that much extra cash to devote to just DAZ stuff NOW.
I do like the sales where you can get free stuff and stuff at lower prices like the ten free 1.59 2.59 sale now for Mei Lin... But the free and 1.59 and 2.59 items are mostly the same from the last couple of sales where we had that option, so I have pretty much all I need out of them, I could possibly use some of the spaceship stuff, but I have a load of that already, and I haven't rendered 3/4 of what I have already. There are some items I don't have yet, that I know I can and would use, but not enough to make the deal a great deal, especially considering the 20% discount on gift cards if you buy the pro bundle... Yeah, the discount on gift cards is great and all, but if you don't have the ready cash that you can devote to DAZ purchases in advance, then the deal is not that great.

Well, I bet Mei Lin 7 could whoop Mei Lin 8 in a fight, LOL. I am surprised by the size difference, but I am glad that ML8 is about the normal size of a woman. Mei Lin 7 is a towering presence, and her sometimes beedy eyes look like she might just cut you you if you do her wrong. So don't do Mei Lin 7 wrong.
Here are some more comparison shots of Mei Lin 8 with Mei Lin 7. If you need to zoom, right click and pick open image in new tab will work if the image doesn't pop out here.
This Mei Lin 7 is actually the "Mei Lin 7 for Mei Lin 8" version. That made it easier for me to pose and swap materials. The thing that stands out to me is how much grain there is in ML8's skin. If you zoom in it is very grainy, with these bits of orange. I assume this is due to chromatic SSS. In contrast, ML7's skin not only looks more real, but it renders MUCH cleaner than ML8. Why is a last gen character looking more real than the new and supposedly improved 8 series? This weird orange fake skin is rampant throughout so much of the G8 lineup. I don't like to be harsh, but G8 is now a year and a half old, if you cannot get chromatic SSS to work you need to just stop using it.
However, we can change the skin settings. How about using the same surface settings that Mei Lin 7 uses? Let's try that!
To do this, I simply used CTL+left mouse to apply the Mei Lin 7 preset to ML8 and chose to ignore replacing the textures. Then I applied the S maps to both top coat weight and glossy layered weight just like they are in ML7. The difference is immediate. You can see skin detail that was not there before. ML8 has a decent skin texture...you just cannot see it for all the dual lobe and chromatic SSS going on! There is also less grain. It is still present, but greatly reduced. And on top of all of this the render time for this image was much faster, like almost TWICE as fast. So...it looks better AND renders faster...come on Daz. What is the point of chromatic if this is the result? I have seen very few cases where chromatic SSS actually makes the model better, and most of those are bluejaunte.
Upon close inspection I can see where the eyebrows were painted on, you can see where the skin is very smooth around the eyebrow compared the skin outside that point. And I can also find spots where a couple of moles look like they were photoshopped in. You probably don't notice this in normal use, but I thought I would point that out. In this render you can make out that smooth skin above the brow that contrasts against the rest of the forehead skin. Zoom in and look about 1 cm above the brow, Again I am not trying to be rude, but I have to critique objectively. I hope this can be a lesson and be learned from. In particular, the chromatic use really needs to be examined. Something has to change. I just do not think that it is worth it if you cannot solve the grain and orange waxy color issues. Genesis 3 was getting really fantastic near its end, with wonderfully real looking characters, and none of them used chromatic SSS. Then Genesis 8 came and its like Daz forgot everything that made those figures great just to play with new Iray toys. Zelara was really good, but now we are back to the orange again.
Next test, lets use Mei Lin 7 skin on ML8.
I really like this! I think Mei Lin 8 wears ML7's skin even better than ML7 herself! And again, look, very little grain.
Next test, lets use ML8 skin on ML7. For this one I just used the default ML8.
I have to say, I think ML7 wears this skin pretty well. Her bones structure takes to it nicely. But notice that the grain is back again. *sigh*
Next the final test, let's do something weird and use totally different skins. How about BJ Misumi and Murphy!
I thought I used the 4.10 setting option to avoid the pixels, but its too late now. Regardless we can see the result, and I think its pretty interesting. ML8 suddenly looks a bit tougher, and ML7 shines with Murphy. I chose these because they use chromatic, and they look great IMO. (well, once I use the right setting or the 4.11 beta to get rid of the pixels.) There is some grain in the shadow, but it is not overly visible. Regardless the skin looks much more alive than ML8's default.
And now one last image, just a close up of Mei Lin 8 using the ML7 settings I discussed above.
Oh, thanks for the comparisons, but extra thanks for the reminder about chromatic SSS. I was noticing extra grain on ML8 materials even on ML7, I usually remember to change that but completely forgot about that this time.
Wow...I reallly like the Misumi skin on ML8...much more interesting. ML8 is kinda blah to me...mostly because of the skin texture, but also because, I don't see much detail in the morph. Other Asian PA characters have been looking really good lately. I'm not sure ML8 really adds much. The deal is nice....just trying to decide if I really need it. I might have been more swayed with a 30% discount as opposed to the 20% off a giftcard. I realize the the gift card is the better deal if loading it up with a couple hundred dollars. But, I'm better off buying in smaller cartloads these days.
I was a bit surprised that Rarestone wasn't tapped for this one...especially after they did Sakura.

Well, oddly I like 7 better overall, but I do like the more natural brows in 8. The 7 brows have that painted on look. Guess I can change them out using one of the brow packs I have. Still can't afford 8 even though I'd love to have her. C'est la vie.

The comparison renders are really nice, thanks to those who have posted them, along with the skin swaps. Mei Lin 7 is much more beautiful to me, and given the weak sale offer, Mei Lin 8 just isn't tempting me.
Please, please, please, let Lee 8 be soon, and absolutely amazing.
Yes, I think 7 is beautiful. She looks less like a child and more of an elegant adult. I'm not sure what 8 is capable of doing in the 'I'm a big girl too' area, but out of the box she just seems young and not full grown.

Maybe DAZ should stop doing sales for awhile. How many of us are rich enough to keep buying all this stuff? I've seen some of these "Bundle sales," and can't find anything I want to buy. The same goes for the PC monthly discounts. I was away from DAZ for a year or more. The more mature (older) characters interested me. But I cant find the stuff I'd want to make my ideas work. Now I've stopped buying DAZ stuff again, and will let my PC membership stop, once again.
People don't have enough money, so they should stop having sales?
I'm a bit baffled about that one.
I find the "constant sales" baffling. Like many others, I get fatigued just thinking about trying to keep up with the sales. That's actually a well-known trend in the retail world. I believe it's called "sales fatigue?!" A sale is designed to encourage people to buy stuff. People aren't fantastically rich, and so often people just stop buying.
LOL I was thinking the same thing. When there's a sale and I don't have the funds to spare, I don't buy. I'm not sure why that is such a difficult issue. LOL Just because I can't buy doesn't mean anyone else can't. Don't expect Daz to have their sales revolve around my (or anyone else's) financial availability ;).

Everyone has different reactions and opinions when it comes to events. I merely shared my own reactions. Others have posted similar concerns and reactions as well. That's it.
They can have all the sales they want, I can drool til I soak the front of my shirt, but if I can't afford it, then I don't buy. I'm sad, but the world doesn't stop because 'aww, she needs a break from sales til she has disposable income'. My PC membership expires Nov25th, and I've already cancelled it and deleted my form of payment. This will be the first Pro Bundle I've never gotten (well except those waify looking girls, faeries, pixies, kids and toons.) I gotten several older Pro Bundles for G6 and G7 free by purchasing 'new realease' Pro Bundles, but you can only pick so many free bundles and then you have them all, even ones you don't want. Geez, I even have the Scott 6 bundle for free, and who ever wanted him? Him and so many others are just sitting in my product library gathering virtual dust and have never been downloading or even thought of. At some point, I had to draw the line thinking how much money I've wasted buying things I've never even downloaded and also due to being dangerously close to maxing out my cc. That's scary enough for me to quit buying no matter how much I have bundle envy.
Hey, some of us like Scott 6
