  • Wonderland,

The product appears to be to be excellent as far as expectaions of Daz figures is concerned.

However, I too see the same thing you are seeing, but I do not think it will go away any time soon. To a certain degree these varations are natural, especially in areas where there is a good deal of friction, such as elbows and knees. The issue is the extremity of these variations on texture samples, and I agree that often they become cartoonish and not realistic and look like the person could use some lotion.

These blotches are caused by the contrast and sharpness adjustments decided upon by texture artists when they are editing skins derived from photo sessions of real humans. It's the main reason why I no longer purchase skins based on real human skin samples... just too much pre-processing by the texture artists to still appear realistic AFTER rendering.

Wanting to make everything visible cases problems in my view. Lack of subtlety

A good example is if you look at the Skin Builder Product for Genesis 8 released recently by ZevO. Look carefully at the promos. You will notice how much more pronounced and "baked in" the wrinkles of the skin especially the palms and the soles of the darker skin template are compared to the lighter skinned templates. Not that the product isnt excellent, just as Latonya is excellent (not sure about those pointed in looking brows however) but it still just falls into the same overly processed look that I realize diminishes the realism of many (but not all) darker skin textures offered here at Daz3d most of the time.

The contrast, sharpness and other tricks that might work for lighter skin tones tend to fail on darker tones if one is not extremely careful not to exaggerate the features. Remember too that the natural specualr "black magic" that occurs on darker skins tends to desaturate and further polarize darker skins derived from real photos. That shine of sorts that we all love in a render is a big problem when gathering the original texture samples. The only way I have found to overcome this limitation is to avoid photo based skins to begin with, and build every detail from procedurals or applied brushes. Many of the toon skins (provided they arent TOO uniform) tend to leave more room for realism once rendered than the textures with higher levels of contrast sold directly as realistic. Crazy, No?

Here are all 8 of the LaTonya 8 figures. All lighting is using ultra genesis studio. The original file is 5000 x 2640 and can be downloaded from deviant art to see more detail: https://www.deviantart.com/renderguyny/art/Latonya-Test-762612899

Oh! Thank you @JasonSWrench !! Much appreciated!

I really like the morph addition to the gene pool. I'm going to try to get the sale to work out by adding items, but I always seem to fail at this.

Is anyone else getting these weird blotches on her elbows and hands???

And the Sports Diva Outfit looks decent with Fabiana's Shader Plan Knits  BUT the dress is pretty bad. Here I had reduced LaTonya's body by around 80% so it's mostly just plain G8 and I just added a tiny bit of cleavage from regular Daz morphs and immediately there was pokethrough and no morphs to fix it although adding a smoothing modifier worked but why are there no morphs on it (except a full body morph for Kaylee and Penny)?

That's just because to allow the knuckles, knees, elbows to bend comfortably the flesh in those areas needs lots of wrinkles and so there is more skin there and that makes it thicker skin density per cubic meter and so that makes it appear darker because less light is directly penetrating all the skin in the folds of those wrinkles. It is the same for everybody not just folk with a lot of melanin but those will appear pinker, redder, you know, whatever shade the skin is predominates.

These renders do though tempt me to buy her but I won't. I need to stick to me bit of discipline and get toony characters only.

First let me say I am so very happy with this product.

The morphs and emotions is so very impressive. And oh my goodness, CLONES! so many clones!

Ok. So' I'm very happy. But the skin, hmm....I'm not sure what this orange stuff is..The discoloration at joints is good to me, I expect it and it needs to be there, but the orange turns reddish, then darkens and this seems a bit...unnatural. I'm not sure what's happening here. The texture appears to be photoreal and very high quality, but the is some phase shift happening with the color. It's all good though, because I have many textures that I currenlty use that look great.

Thanks Daz! I finally get to play with M7 and Darius7! Very happy!

So this is my cart.  Is this what everybody seems to get for pricing?  I had to get the nails cuz none of the Daz figures come with current trendy nails IMHO.  I'm getting Tween Julie because some of her outfits would look cute on that little girl from the morph pack for Latonya.  And the Anneka Pro bundle cuz I just found out she has some pretty nice clothes and characters, plus the addons that are included!  The rest I already either have or have most items from them.

But anyway, this is the pricing for me, and I don't have a banner.  Wondering it I should wait til tomorow??  Also, this no HD thing for Latonya pi**es me off.  Why hold it back for her?

Yes, those are the same prices I got on the same products although I did not get the HD morphs

    Thanks!  Wanted to make sure.

I haven't even bought my items yet.  All in the cart, just waiting.

My husband has darker elbows and slightly darker knuckles, but when they look like hers, he says 'I need lotion, my skin is all ashy'.

Plus, just noticed on the premier artist page that's pimping the Latonya stuff has her name misspelled.  They have 'Lotanya' instead of 'Latonya'.  Geez.  Can't type much??

I was wondering if anyone else noticed that. As a person of color myself, I can tell you every black person knows people are going to misspell/mispronounce your name. It's just part of the experience. That makes the product more authentic.cheeky

Very interesting release! Finally some color for a Daz Original, I really thought Monique and Darius would be the only African Amercans for G8. Though I still wonder if any Asian characters will come out at this point. I think it is worth noting that "Crazy Rich Asians" is one of the biggest and most talked about movies of the year, and one of the biggest rom-com movies in an entire decade. I think that right NOW might be a really good time to strike out with an Asian DO to take advantage of this. And G8 is LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG past due for a realistic Asian. It has been 126 WEEKS since Mei Lin 7 was released. In that time, we have had centaurs, monsters, and lots toons released. Here is a fun stat: There have been more DO centaurs released in the last 2 years than Asians. This is a fact. (Mei Lin release April 7, 2016 which is well over 2 years ago; Centaur 7 release May 23, 2017.) I'm not counting add ons here, and there's only a scant few anyway, most are aquisitions from Mouso. Think about that for a moment. Just sayin'.

Anyway, I like the look of the skin for Latonya. I am intrigued by the promos for P3D's morphs. For one, I really like how they say what skin they use, that is really nice. On the first promo, for Imani, it says "BJ Sahel with adapted shader". What "adapted shader" is this? Is this something P3D did, or something available? I rather like the tone of it! If this was their own settings, is there any chance of posting what they are?

Don't like the bundle offerings at all. The pro bundles have been extremely lame lately. The hairs are ok, but what is going on with these outfits? They are all over the place, with no coherent direction between them. Were the items for the pro bundle choosen out of a hat?

But the dark blotches are painted on the skin map. It's not about the light hitting it. I still like her a lot and can fix it in Photoshop. People are saying discoloration happens IRL when darker skinned people get older but she doesn't look THAT old to me and I think the texture artist should have blended the tones better just as I will have to do in post myself. I may even work on the texture maps themselves to make it easier. Maybe those areas could be a little darker but the way it is, it looks like she's been playing in the mud LOL.

I think I'll work on the texture maps myself in Photoshop. I think the major problem is that the blotchy parts are of a bluish skin tone as well as being so much darker than the rest of the skin which is more of a dark golden tone. I think that has to be fixed then using the clone tool at low opacity to blend will do the trick. It does seem like the sections came from different photo resources and the color was not matched and blended correctly. I'm not sure why, but it often seems that the skin on Daz Original characters are much worse than most PA skins. Like Genevieve 7-- I love the morph but with any skin but the one it came with!

I agree. I think quality-wise and detail-wise Zelara 8 was a step up. And Latonya 8 is really beautiful. I prefer her with some skin shader adjustments but that can be said for the way I feel about most figures - because I'm like addicted to making tweaks to skin settings. lol All in all though I'm really happy with Latonya and what she brings to my G8 gene pool.

How much is the pro bundle for those who have PC membership? (not including any special discounts from banners) Just debating whether it's better to get the PC membership first and then do the deals/discount on the pro, or if you get the same buying the PC membership at the same time.

  • NorthOf45NorthOf45 Posts: 5,725

With 2 more Debut New items (use the Latonya 8 promo page, not the PA Festival page, they're all jumbled together) it will be $33.06 (there are no banner ads) plus the cost of the 2 others. The price will jump to $39.68 when Latonya 8 products move off the Still New list in a couple of days, if they follow the usual schedule. The Latonya promo will still be in effect, presumably, for a couple of weeks. Maybe.

Well, what, if anything, would you do to Zelara, Divamakeup? I, too, think Daz absolutely nailed the Iray implementation and details on Zelara. It was so surrealistically good and far beyond anything other than bluejaunte's variations on a skin (but I could not abide the eye bag marks for my purposes) that I had to change my main character's skin to Zelara's. I was hoping that Zelara was a new standard, but I suspect that her level of quality may show up once or twice more (at most) in the Daz Core stable.

Beautiful job, ALLIEKATBLUE. That was more of what I was hoping for with Latonya's skin color, but those ashy elbows! I refused to buy that hair because of the unbelievable curls, but it looks good if you can't see the details.

And again I say....what the hell, why isn't the HD included for her like the last several previous packs?  Makes no sense to hold that back for an obviously amazing figure. Just don't know what to make of Daz decisions.

  • OK, I really like her. Here she is as an upscale business woman. Eyes are from Minka (I didn't like the eyes she came with,) thinner body and a retextured Sports Diva Outfit. DS default HDRI. There is something more real about her than most characters... I think she may be one of my favorite Daz Originals!

kinda looks like a young Oprah Weinfrey here

if I remember right before I added the extras it was about $56 US but I got the Pro, HD add on, Jiwoo Denim boots and Panthera textures for $52.10 US which in our money was $75.32 Australian. Be slightly cheaper still if you only pick the cheapest add ons. Also grabbed two free pro bundles Gianni and Leo so couldn't use my $6 coupon as if you remember when you get freebies you only get a couple of dollars knocked off not the full $6

maybe because there were some that kept complaining and hating the HD morphs were included free with the Pro Bundles and refused to buy them because of that? Yeah I wish it was included too as well as future ones. As for the clothing maybe they're playing it safe and not doing a character themed because everytime they do a character themed bundle for a non white they cop a lot of flack saying they are being stereo typed or worse

  • The clothes in this bundle probably the worst yet, the sports diva, ugh, and the weird space costume, really why would Latonya go in space.  Such a "diva" would have much better hair. And I can do without the "yeah girl" expressions. Be that as it may, she's in the cart

    Say whaaaaaat!?!

  • All geisha and dragon lady themed outfits are a problem, sure, but doing an "unthemed" but only skimpy, revealing clothing for a character like this isn't a much better look. I skipped the pro bundle because of the clothing, though I did end up getting several characters and the hair. I like her overall look, and the characters that were released alongside her.

Only Mabel recently has the HD and I think that is because she was so specialized for facial appearance. Many people do not render closeup or care about that level of realism whether just for hobby or use. Besides if you actually do dress a character from head to toe, only the face HD will matter and on Latonya there are just a couple of lines under the eyes and texture on the lips.

I at least like you have a choice to get the HD and at a great discount.
