Genesis 8, is it Enough?
in The Commons
Hi, I am using Genesis 2 still because I do not want to use Iray. I like my 3Delight and hope to stay that way.
But I noticed that Genesis 8 can uses Materials from Genesis 2. Is this practical?
I have a lot of tools I use on my Poses and Shapes, such as; FM Muscle Flexing, Discobob & Zev's Fit Control, Ideal Beauty, and Zev's various Body Controls. Would I need tools like that, and are they available for the Genesis 8? I also used a tool to get V4/M4 and Genesis shapes for Genesis 2. Is there a com parable tool to get Genesis 2 shapes in Genesis 8?
Thank you, in advance for taking the time. :)

Many Genesis 3 models and items come with 3DL textures.
Yes similar tools are available for Genesis 8. Wether you need them or not depends on what you wan to do. Fit control can be a good asset to have but with the dforce there is a way around the breast hugging effect.

With those 3 bundles you have LOTS of flexibilities.
You can get Genesis 2 shapes to Genesis 3, but you will need another way to get the results to Genesis 8, and there is a method, though convoluted imo, to do so. Here's the forum thread.
If you are satisfied with Genesis 2 and 3Delight, then the only bonus from G8 would be a choice of many more facial morph packs as well as vastly improved control over facial expressions (as well as better bends, of course, with Zev0's and others' utilities).
Have fun!
There is a free script around to convert G3 to G8 poses. I have had great success with that. The arms and leg need small adjustment as the G8 uses an A stance as where G3 uses a T stance. The script corrects those. That way you only have to do some minor adjustments like you would normaly.
Thanks, @Mescalino, but AFAIK, the author of the script (SingularBlues) has removed it from publication.
@xyer0 Here its still available:
https://www.sharecg.com/v/88560/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/G3F-G8F-pose-adjust-scripts-Legs-Arms-and-Full
And this is the other way around:
https://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/genesis-8-to-genesis-3-pose-adjust/77634
(But in my case i usualy use G3 on G8 figures then the other way around so with the last script i dont have much experience)
My apologies, @Mescalino! I misread your post: Instead of "pose," my mind thought "morph," and that resulted in the confusion. Yes, I have the pose converter pinned to the top of DS, but thanks for the links anyway. Have a lovely day!
You, two, are great! TYVM :)
It's a shame there is not an easy to use tool to transport G3 to G8. I have several favored character designs that I transported from V4/M4 to Genesis to G2. I saw that many G3 characters supported 3Delight with included textures. A few of them I have, but after spending a few days playing around I realised I would have to get Ideal Beauty, Fit Control, etc. all over again. I seemed to have issues with the wardrobes using Gen and G2 clothing so I was worried an entire wardrobe was necessary as well. Which seemed like a big deal (and still does).
But if G8 is more practical in accepting older wardobe designs, especially Genesis, I might be in for an upgrade.
there's another pose converter too that may help: https://jakiblue.deviantart.com/art/G3F-to-G8F-World-s-Greatest-Pose-Converter-709591348
Although I didn't think Gen8 could use Gen2 textures without converting?
So is it not practical?
You'd want something like this for conversion, as G3 and G8 break compatibility to the older generations with a completely different UV layout:
Yep, those were ones I was thinking of. G3 skin textures will work on G8, although some of the iconic bases (Victoria 7, Olympia 7 etc, I mean) may have problems - I know Teen Josie 7's skin doesn't work properly on G8F. But RedzStudio created two products that will help with that:
https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-3-character-uvs-for-genesis-8-female (currently on sale)
https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-3-character-uvs-for-genesis-8-male
Install them and it works automatically - you don't have to do anything.
For anything below G3, you'll need the ones BeeMKay linked.
Not practical in that, if you ONLY have Genesis 2 and want to start using Genesis 8, you'll need extra products if you don't wish to start buying Genesis 8 stuff.
But it's totally up to you - if you are happy with Genesis 2, then stick with it. You don't HAVE to start using Genesis 8 at all.
Oh, I saw your question re Zev - Zev has Genesis 8 products available, like Fit control and aging morphs etc.
But converting your Genesis 2 products straight to Genesis 8 will require work, extra products etc. You won't be able to do it natively - Genesis 8 won't take Genesis 2 skin textures, and I think the auto fit is pretty weak also.
Whenever I load G2, I have issues (not with the render engine as they are easy to address), but with the bending, posing and and general morphing of the figure; for me, Genesis 3 was as significant improvement; G8 a less considerable - but still more than useful - addition.
Personally, get the morphs for G8, and see what you think; and of course, your G2 resources will always be available for G2.
... And also for G3 and 8 with the use of addons from here or rendo (for textures).
Transferring morphs is normally fairly straightforward; time-consuming if you want to do a lot, and as long as their shapes aren't extreme should no offer any difficulties. The only issues I have, is where the height change is not easy to zero. Then there is the GenX method to transfer shapes to G3, and from G3, more straightforward.
I am having an omg moment here. The Genesis 8 requires you to update to DAZ 4.9.4.111 (or later). Currently I am using 4.7. I once upgraded and it kept crashing, so long story short; I reloaded an older version and never needed to upgrade since.
Does 4.9.4.111 even support 3Delight? Do I need to download it seperately like Luxus?
Genesis 8 is totally unusable in this older version of DAZ. For some reason the Materials do not fit right, even if you go with a different UV set. This is a totally different story than with Genesis 3, which actually did work in 4.7 and rendered fine in 3Delight.
4.10 (is what i use) supports both 3Delight and Iray. (4.10 also has dforce which is a huge plus) The only issues i have had in DAZ where problems outside DAZ. (my nvidia driver had issues)
So from personal experience, I recommend upgrading to the latest version.
I can understand many peoples old love for V4/M4 or Genesis 2 stuff to a certain degree, but in my opinion Genesis 8 is so much better (even compared to Genesis 3) that it was not a real question for me to change. I was reluctant at first because I had so much G/G2/G3 stuff and the different base pose baffled me, but in the meantime I never use G3 again. Although I have some lovely morphs for G3 I could not replicate with G8 till now.
You should change to 4.10. I used a 4.9 version (I hate upgrading and perhaps losing settings) but had big problems with older stuff on G8, sometimes even G3 stuff. After changing to 4.10 all problems are gone, all Genesis, Genesis 2 and 3 clothes etc. work fine. Some Genesis and G2 clothing and props or at least parts of it are still not replacable.
The problem of the different G8 poses (why did they do such nonsense? to sell poses/props again?) compared to G3 was mostly solved for me with the installation of "The-world-greatest-pose-converter" from AgentUnawares for males and females, for G3F/G8F linked in jakiblue's post from June 18. The converter is not as great as the text tells, it is even greater.
Thank you. I think the version I had issues with was 4.8 and if you don't pay attention you forget that you are in an outdated version sometimes. :)
This is perhaps the biggest concern of mine is just the sheer amounts of stuff I had for Genesis and Genesis 2. It was teaming up with my anxiety of losing all the tools I became so used to as well (Zev's morphs, Fit Control, etc.) which amounted to an expensive undertaking to upgrade. Genesis 3 I tried a few times but got flustered with the new pose options and also found the clothing did not fit as well as I imagined.
So maybe what I am asking is how often do you have problems using clothes for Genesis 2 and previous wardrobes to Genesis 8.
Genesis 2 clothes fit on Genesis 8 fairly well (with the exception of some high heels, although there are workarounds for that in many cases), but I have every utility available; so, I'm not sure how much is working behind the scenes without my conscious participation. Fit Control is also invaluable for making autofitted garments drape more realistically, although you can take the plunge into dForce as an addition or alternative to that.
My first response to you was only about shapes/morphs, and I neglected to mention the Legacy skin texture products necessary for moving pre-G3 skin to G8. But others caught the slack. Since the Legacy skin products use a geoshell, there are difficulties using Wet Body and Shaved products when you use pre-G3 skins on G8.
In April, I discovered a flaw in my morph-dialed G3F leading lady that would have been more trouble to fix (so I thought) than to just design a new woman using G8F. I also ended up changing the G3F skin, which I loved, to a G8F skin. As a result of the things I have discovered since then, I would suggest that---if you are going to use Genesis 8---you focus on the Zev0 and Sickleyield utility products for that generation along with Daz Original head and body, RareStone, 200 Plus, Emma&Jordi, and Thorne/HandspanStudios morph kits and forgo generation conversion utilities. Most of this G8F morph stuff is on huge sale right now until possibly the 24th. If you are serious about G8F and can afford to do it, you should get all this stuff NOW imo.
I only have Edie 8 (and her Grandma option) from the G8 range but I can't see what is so much better about G8 than G3. Certainly I've seen nothing in the posted renders here that suggest a big improvement. Nor have I seen anything in the promo pictures that wouldn't be possible with G3. I have a bunch of morph packages for G3 (F&M) that I'd bet will produce almost anything that can be achieved with G8 plus I have add-ons (DAZ and 3rd Party) which just make it too expensive to switch once again for the slight - if any - benefits of the newer figures.
It is not the expense of buying new clothes (although that is a big consideration), it is rather the expense of replacing all of those morphs and add-ons. I have almost the whole catalogue of Zev0 products for G2 and then again for G3 so yet another round was too much to justify for too little gain.
These tools work, but they rely on geografts, which are annoying in other software than Daz Studio. So I'd love to see a tool that transfers the texture maps pixel by pixel from one UV layout to another.
This way you could reuse your G2 texture on G8 and mix it even with another G8 texture.
Where is G8 better than older figures? Good question. When I saw G8 first I noticed no difference. I bought a heavily reduced Lucas8 and Stefanie8 out of curiosity and was annoyed about the new base pose and the difficulty to use old stuff with them.
The latter problem was solved with the change to 4.10. Any old clothing fits G8 well. It is especially nice that I can use Genesis stuff on G8 much easier than on G3, out of the box.
To the former question, "G8 better than G3?", over the time I felt the difference mainly in the shoulder area in some positions. G3 is better than G2 here and G8 is better than G3. If you make only close-ups or use certain positions it may not be even noticable. And perhaps it depends also on what figure of the G8 family you use, what body morphs and so on.
What does this mean?
Black Smith Texture Transformer does transfer pixel by pixel V4, M4, G2F, G2M, all to G3F or G3M and all the intermediaries forwards and backwards except oddly Genesis but I think Genesis can be applied to V4/M4 and saved in V4/M4 format by DAZ Studio (not sure though).
Then you can load G3M/G3F on G8M/G8F and save as G8M/G8F.
It will cost a but of money though to buy that program & all it's addons however if you just buy the G2F / G2M and transfer to G3F / G3M you'll save a bit of money buying addons. I think all together it costs less than $100 but it goes on sale from time to time.
@Singular3D: Is that you, TAFKASingularBlues?! Does your new moniker forebode a commercial release of your morph conversion tools? Whatever the case may be, it's nice to see you around, and I look forward to forthcoming in-depth loquaciousness.
Really? It does not overwrite the old version? I will try that then.
The thing is that some of the morph packages can overcome the shortfalls in the standard G3 figures and characters. I mean the aforementioned Zev0 packs and I also recently bought the Musculature HD Morphs Bundle which has a nice discount of 70% (still so, I've just checked). Together these add realism to any G3 character but that requires a bit of slider-pushing. That, for me, is great fun but I guess others prefer to buy pre-made characters rather than dialing-in their own creations.
