I just had to look that up!  https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/quidnunc   And it's in my Funk & Wagnalls Standard Desk Dictionary, too.  That was published in 1977.  I got it so I could do what they told me on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In.   laugh

I keep forgetting there is a Macy’s at the mall.  Before I went home today, I went somewhere to try on three perfumes. Liked one of them but not sure which one?  Or what the three were anyway.  I cannot remember.  My taxi driver thought it smelled nice.  Wish I could remember what it was.

109 degrees today ...feel so sad when I see people walking their tiny dogs on the burning hot blacktop. What are they thinking?

  • frank0314frank0314 Posts: 14,708

When it's like that here people tend to put the booties on their dogs.

Translating is so frustrating... is the word "quidnunc" even still in use in contemporary English...? *groans*

I never heard or saw that word, ever.  What do you think it means?

    Dana

    Trouble for me, definitely. laugh

Thanks for the feedback, though. I take it that the word is not in general use and a lot of people would have no idea what it means... Great, now I have to find another word... McGossip, maybe? wink

Like I said, translation is frustrating.

In warmer weather, if you don't have a lawn or a nearby dog park to walk your dog, then try to walk your dog in early morning or late evening when the sidewalks and road surfaces are cooler and not exposed to direct sunlight (early morning is best). smiley

What is a VPN and why would I need it?

Virtual Private Network (VPN):  It is an addressing, encapsulation, and encryption scheme that permits sending data across the Internet through multiple routers & servers but does not expose the actual data or even the real addresses of the senders.  It is as if you had a separate, private, point-to-point transmission wire between senders.   It simulates a Private Network.  It is a "Private Network" but it is "Virtual".

    https://technet.microsoft.com/pt-pt/library/cc779919(v=ws.10).aspx

You use a VPN to prevent, or at least make it much more difficult, to let network spies capture your data packets and see what you say or even who you talk with.  It's like a cloak of invisibility for your data.

Businesses sometimes set up their corporate server to use VPN channels so that their employees can connect to the company from home without risk of sensitive data being exposed as it travels across the public Internet.

For most people just browsing the Internet, standard file encryption and use of "https" features of browsers is sufficient security.  But for those people who are really paranoid, for whatever reason, about others seeing what they are up to, a VPN works quite nicely.

VPNs can also help you get around geoblocks. For example to access iPlayer from outside the UK, or to get US Netflix from outside the US.

Complaint?:  When I first returned to this area 10 years ago the summer was rife with big storms and I had to make sure the computers were on surge protectors or UPS's or even unplugged many afternoons.  But for the last several years the summer storms have been mostly drizzles, soakers & downpours but very few thunderboomers.  Not sure if this is a good thing or not.

Our golden retriever (Oakley) says it would be great. (He is terrified by thunder)

Get Oakley a ThunderShirt.  I got one for my daughter's dog that I am dogsitting.  It works miracles.

Went shopping at a place called Sprouts farmers market.  Thought I found a great deal on peaches until I checked the receipt after I already left the store.  I thought the price was per container but it was per pound and I got two pounds of peaches.  On good news I got five cents credit for bringing my own bag.

I also asked if they had any GinGins ginger chews.  They pointed me to the direction and said that the yellow ones just came in.  Apparently they were a dollar cheaper than the GinGin brand.

I thought I got two pounds of pears but only got 1.85 pounds which was four pears.

I also got cheese curds but not sure if they will last till Friday.  (They could if I practice self control)

I think there will be an inspection but hopefully my groceries will not be an issue.

Norton has one for use on laptops and smartphones.  I am thinking of getting it, so I can be less concerned when using the laptop when on vacation...the WiFi is not protected there.  Same for using the smartphone on public WiFi hotspots.  I think it's a good idea.

I don't have a dog, the thought just occurred to me.  That dog looks uncomfortable wearing those things.  I guess maybe they get used to them eventually.
