Any of you that are fortunate enough to own both Anagenessis and Altern8, try applying one after the other.  They really do seem to compliment each other very well with Altern8 removing the excessive red splotches and NGS2 taming the green cast.  Give it a whirl. :)

    Genesis 3 Base Female

    Base G3f Alt8 Recipe 01

    Base G3f Alt8 Recipe 01 Close Up

This is the default materials for base Genesis 3 Female. She's wearing the geoshell swimsuit from Megah and Jolie Hair. Set and lighting are from Premium Portrait Poses - Wall, as is the original pose, though I've modified it to some degree, as well as used Look At Me to move her eyes, head and neck to look at the camera and Expression Mixer for the expression. The colors of the swimsuit have been tweaked as well, to better complement the lip color of the makeup.

I used the following Altern8 presets:

    Altern8 - Lucas 8 B - No Maps
    Altern8 SSS Tint - A
    Altern8 Skin Shine Lips C - High
Altern8 Skin Shine - Load Skin Shine Maps
    Altern8 Skin Shine B - Medium
    Altern8 Eyes - EyeSocket
    Altern8 Eyes - Sclera 050

Once I decided on the No Maps preset I liked best, I added makeup, changed the swimsuit color, and applied the other presets listed above. While deciding on which one to use, I only applied the No Maps presets. Here are the results, with thumbnails linking to the larger, (1500 x 1500,) images.

I forgot to mention that none of the No Maps presets gave the G3 Base Female "rudolph nose," though the Victoria 8 settings are much redder than the others. I believe the real culprit causing the red nose is the image map in the translucency setting for G8. I will investigate this further and report back to this thread.

I redid my Ollie with specs (with a few minor posing changes) in the same light, same camera as the original. The first has the base Ollie skin. The second has Altern8 with Edward No maps and 35% translucency. The third is the same as the second except it's only 15% translucency. All in all, I prefer the third one, even though the translucency is still too strong on the nose (I'm ok with the translucency on the ear). However, the default Ollie skin has very little if any translucency showing, even though the skin is slightly less ruddy, but the redder shade of the other two don't put me off. At least they look more like skin. :) The default looks more like he was attacked with a pot of pancake by a crazy makup artist. LOL.

Oh, and the eyes look better too. Don't look as "solid" I guess. Can't quite put my finger on it. LOL. Anyway, while it may not be perfection I feel Altern8 is closer to what some of us are after than the defaults. We just have a small learning curve to experiment with what looks best to us :).

I haven't used the default G3 skin in ages, but that looks pretty good!

Thank you for posting your formula and the different looks with the different presets! I like the settings formula you came up with. I think that the Charlotte 8 and Victoria 8 ones look pretty nice too! I'm going to have to play around with the base G3 skin with Altern8 - I like what you've done here!

hahah He's really got a lot of character! Nice work! I really like the third render. He might be a tad red, but maybe a different SSS Tint color would cool the skin a tad. I like him a lot! Great character!

The Ollie skin is great, isn't it? I've had a lot of fun playing with it and the Altern8 settings. He's got my favorite "Official 8" male skin so far. :D

I'm not sure I understand. If you mean a character preset, the only character presets in this product are Genesis 8 characters, as this version of Altern8 was designed around the "Official 8" Daz characters. While the presets can be used on G3 characters, I didn't make any character presets for specific G3 characters with this version.

L'Adair just posted a great formula for the Genesis 3 Base Female. But I can try and come up with a couple of formulas as well if you'd like. :) Once you get a good look that you like with the skin you can also save it as a Material Preset if you use the Base Genesis 3 skin a lot.

Hey @DivaMakeup , have you ever thought of doing a video tutorial?  Even if it was a short one. To show Altern8.  I myself has been thinking of doing a review/tutorial once I figure out how to use it right. Though It might be a little while. It such a dense and awesome system.

Any of you that are fortunate enough to own both Anagenessis and Altern8, try applying one after the other.  They really do seem to compliment each other very well with Altern8 removing the excessive red splotches and NGS2 taming the green cast.  Give it a whirl. :)

    Hi,

I do have both. If one were to do this, which order would you recommend applying? Anagenesis and then Altern8 or apply Altern8 and then Anagenesis?

Just try both out and see which works for you. Both do things a bit differently and from what i do know about anagenesis, I can't see the two working well together, but you might get an interesting result you like. If not, it's not like it's permanent, just start over again.

My first test with Altern8 using a slightly modified version of Raiya's Brooklyn and the Charlotte no-maps.  Gave it a little color adjustment in post and fixed a bit of pokethrough on the swimsuit, but otherwise no additional tweaks or postwork.  Overall I love this product, but I posted an alternate no-clothes version on my DevArt page, as the one thing that Altern8 did oddly was that the nipples rendered quite different from the lips.

Looks generally good, but there's a lot of blue coming thru, especially on her inner arm.

    Laurie

I'm going to be the odd one here and say that I absolutely love the greys, blues and greens Alterna8 brings to the table. I love painting fair skins and accenting those very colors. Fair skin often does reflect the colors next to it- if I were painting that image, I would have highlighted the blue that the inner arm is picking up from the blue cloth - tho I know that many of you are not going for that style, for those of us who render as a 'sketch' to post work, Alterna8 is wonderful!!!!

  • AllenArtAllenArt Posts: 7,175

As far as the red nose goes, I think the scattering measurement distance is just a bare smidgeon too high. Turn it back to default (.10) and see if your red nose doesn't go away. This allows the ears to have translucency, but lowers it to about the same as the rest of the skin on the nose. Something to try anyway ;).

In my time working with it, Altern8 does a really good job of enhancing pale, alabaster type skin tones. Hopefully the new presets will add more for the darker skinned models

I turned down the scattering measure distance to .1 on the face surface and lowered a little on the legs for this image and definately helps. I still can tell some variation between the torso and the face and legs but I noticed this also on some original mats so will tweak this. But it is getting very close to looking real to me. Threw it in PS for wash and it was game over:

She looks great, Michael! I do love Altern8 on the pale skins. I am testing presets to help the darker ones (or really any skin) and they are looking good too. I've posted some on the official thread.

@shaneseymour - Wow, the skin looks great, especially the feet. Great work!

I am new to Daz - less than a year.  I can see that this  is a very popular item.  I have not bot it because it all seems overwhelming to me.  The poster above this one stated "I turned down the scattering measure distance to .1 on the face surface and lowered a little on the legs for this image and definately helps.".  This is honestly speaking in hiroglyphics to me - I understand very little of what is going on.

They're talking about a slider on the Iray uber shader stack (under the Surfaces tab).

The product itself is very easy to use, just click presets till you have something you like. You will find as time goes on that there are nearly always tweaks done to materials in the surface and rendering tab for every project for most experienced users, so the sooner you head over to that tab and start playing with the settings, the better for your projects.

I adore your character! She's stunning! Any chance I get to see your shaping settings so I can try and get a similar look? She's GORGEOUS! I understand though if you want to keep it secret and keep her to yourself. heheh :)

I've included some adjustment settings that can be used to lower the Transmitted Measurement Distance. They're included with the additional settings I'm sending off to Daz in a couple hours. They don't seem to do that stuff on the weekends, so I don't think anyone is there to test them or update the product until tomorrow (Monday) but hopefully they'll be able to update the product soon. :)

Don't feel overwhelmed. :) I've actually included some presets (that the product will be updated with) that will do that with one click. I've also included a ReadMe that will be with the update. :) And I'm here daily to help out with any questions. And others who have the product have been super helpful with answer questions as well. :D

The product is pretty fun to use, just load a character and start playing with the different settings until you get a look that you like. :)

Thanks, she's a fav of mine also. If you really are interested I can post the settings or upload a shaping preset, but it includes the DAZ morphs, several character packages for the head, some Zevo morphs, some 200 plus morphs and a few GenX figures such as giselle 6. I had a user contact me at DA last week about her also and I have a sheet with all the morphs listed, PM if you are really interested.

I suppose eventually I'll get around to rendering Iray characters in Iray. At present I'm still wrestling Iray materials into 3DL. It's a learning experience.

Definitely something to stockpile against the day, though.
