I can't imagine ever using the default G8 skin, but Altern8 does a pretty good job of changing it up other than the red nose effect. This is with the Altern8 - Karyssa 8 - No Maps setting and a medium translucency and shine. default lighting (scene and dome) also

It could be SSS doing it. I had that issue with Shadowborne about a year ago. Absolutely wonderful drow character, but I kept getting the red nose in closeups. I documented it here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/2050751/#Comment_2050751 , where you can see the before and afters. Here's what solved it for me:

The Philosopher helped me figure out the red nose issue. It's not the lights, it's in the SSS settings of the drow's skin. I turned down the "Transmitted Measurement Distance" under the Volume from 2.0 to .25. That fixed it. Made some interesting mistakes along the way, including turning my drow a different color at one point! (Hint: Do NOT mess with the transmitted color!) At least I got there in the end. Will post the render when it's done.

That's a great render - one of the most realistic renders of a human I've seen here.

Oy! Why on earth would you use the Karyssa preset with that skin? lol OH my! lol Guys, not every preset is going to look good with every skin. Experiment and see what looks good with the different settings. :)

    @daveso Here's base G8F with "Lucas 8 B - No Maps" and SSS Tint A:

Rendered with HDR A and Render Settings A.

    I hope that helps. :)

I actually tried quite a few no map presets, even male ones. lesson learned, no more posting.

Here's a quick render of the base G8F with Karyssa No Maps. I reduced the Transmitted Measurement Distance from .50 to .15. I'm not noticing the red nose here. You could take it all the way down to zero if you needed to. No postwork on these. Lights, floor and HDR are from Fabiana's Energy Flow set. (Click and zoom in for much larger images)

Closeup- I changed Sclera to .25 (Karyssa No Maps had it at .38) and took the translucency color out of the nails so they weren't so pink. Might have to tweak that just a little more by looking at what the default setting is. And Wow, that Kinley Hair is gorgeous in closeups!

I used Karyssa No Maps to replicate the pink nose and get rid of it cheeky

Thanks! She looks a little like she's just gotten done crying, but I like it. That could actually be quite useful in some scenes. I believe that's just the eye moisture and sclera settings.

@Llynara Those look great! Thank you for the great tip! To compensate for the lesser Transmitted Measurement Distance, you might try lessening the saturation of the SSS Tint color (that should warm the skin up more).

    Lovely renders!

I will try that when we get back from the Science Fair. We have to go see college students blow things up and throw foam at each other now. LOL

Tried out Genesis 8 Female with no morphs and base skin.

I forget which preset I started with, one of the middle ones.

There was a slight red nose effect; I tweaked down Translucency from .65 to .4 or so, also decreased transmitted distance a little. Finally, to compensate for the very pale/cold skin I reduced the SSS reflectance tint saturation a little.

The lips were then a bit dry/pale, so I increased their shine (Altern8 utility) and then made them slightly more translucent to bring out the red without overpowering it or ending up with sharp seam lines.

@divamakeup - is it the SSS amount setting? There are so many in the Surfaces Tab that sometimes I confuse myself LOL. I took it from 1.0 to .50 here. I also see an SSS Reflective Tint but no place to say how much or little.

PS. The Science Fair was fun! It was like a real life Mythbusters, LOL

Some test renders on a character of mine. Altern8 definitely gives a bit more texture. Render times increased ever so slightly for me. For first scene, for example, original character took approx. 9 min 30 sec. First Altern8 test took 11 min; second test took 10 min.

(Also pay no attention to slight variation in lip color. That had to do with the original mat settings...)

I like the Original (skin, lips, eyes). Altern8 really helps the Caucasian skins. Monique has great skin as is. And Darius could use some help, but I was not really impressed with his image in the promos.

Your character looks cool and real. And her hair is really nice. I want hair like that!

I agree.  I want to love this product but I am having a hard time getting a realistic skin for any of my dark-skinned characters.  I am working on Alondra right now.  The lighter skins have various nuances going on around the knees, feet areas of the face that add to realistic skin.  A little rosy nose, some splotches on the chest, some veins etc. And you get to mix and match the mats of the Daz characters.  No matter what setting I use, I get a flat skin lacking in any detail. Changing the translucency and SS settings change the overall color but does nothing to bring out any major skin realism. Didn't realize that the settings for the dark skin was going to be limited because there were only 2 black base characers. And even those didn't seem any better than the original base skins.  None of the renders made of the black skins look any better than I could have come up on my own.  But I took a stab at it cause Diva is my girl and I support my peeps

Here is Candy, the first is original the second is using I think Charlotte with changes to translucency and sss. I like this skin but not the palms of the hands

    .

This is Alondra I think this is Olympia no mats with some change in translusency and the second is using Monique no mats. No change in the lights but her skin looks so dull compared to the first look

The final is Imani by Cynderblue, I don't even remember what I did but I know she came out much lighter than the original skin. Imani is a pretty dark skinned character. Same skin different lights

It's the SSS Reflectance Tint (right under the Translucency Color toward the top of the settings).

If you lower the Transmitted Measurement Distance then it helps to then lower the saturation of the SSS Reflectance Tint color to compensate for the drop in skin warmth. :)

PS - I'm glad the Science Fair went well and that you had fun! I bet those kids came up with some pretty awesome science creations! :D Those same kids will probably be inventing the next generation of technology in a few years. :)

I appreciate you supporting me, you're a sweet heart! :D I've been hearing your feedback and I'm adding 18 adjustment settings that I think will help support a wider range of skin tones - and darker skin in particular. The settings are being beta tested and I'll be sending them off to Daz Sunday evening. They don't work weekends so it will be a while before they can update the product - Monday at the soonest, but I've never had them update one of my products so I'm not sure how long it takes them.

Send me a PM if you want to help beta test the new settings (I could use another beta tester or two as well as some additional feedback - the more eyes the better). :)

I've added a few new settings that I'll be updating the product with to help with some of the skins reacting to some of the settings with a bit of a "red-nose" effect. The new settings will be available as soon as possible - I'm in the process of having the settings beta tested right now and hope to have it all packaged up and sent to Daz by Sunday evening. Since they don't work on stuff like that over the weekend they should be able to (hopefully) look at the settings and test them on Monday - but I'm not sure how long they usually take to update a product. In the meantime, if you get any red-nose effects you can, as Llynara suggested, reduce the Transmitted Measurement Distance until you don't see any "red nose". You'll probably also want to reduce the Saturation of the SSS Reflectance Tint to compensate for the drop in skin tone warmth that reducing the TMD can cause. Again, I have some presets on the way that will help with that, but those are just some suggestions for if you don't want to wait until then. :)

@FSMCDesigns, Two things; First, it has been determined, (don't recall by whom,) and posted in the forums that the default G8F skin is from Karen 7, so not a bad skin material at all. Second, except for the red nose, I think she looks fine with the Karyssa 8 presets.
