Can't buy beer until Noon.. which I suppose prevents you from taking beer to church.  Weird concept. There's already wine at church, why take beer? Or maybe people used to go to church drunk, which is a people issue.  Need to research.

I don't know this as a fact, but I have a suspicion that it's because they'd just drink and not go to church!   laugh

Blue laws are still on the books in many states and counties.

Yes, I know.  I'm not sure, but I think it's still a law in Massachusetts that you must bring your musket with you to church!

In Sunnyvale and most of Silicon Valley, every road except highways had marked bike lanes. Rarely did I have to get on the sidewalk, and I had this electronic bell that literally went "meep meep DING" when pressed. The only times I rode the sidewalks were during real heavy rain, with no pedesterians (only idiots like me rode in the rain with my heavy raingear and goggles).  Since it was a Trek mountain bike, when needed I'm jump the bike on to the sidewalk, then back to the bike lane, to avoid blocks like parked cars (parking in the bike lane was illegal, I'd usually call to have 'em towed, the buggers).  90% of Valley cyclists were cool, but up in The City (SF) they were raging a-holes, holding block-traffic protest rides whenever a cyclist got hit - before anyone determined whose fault it was!!!! The whole 'Critical Mass' movement ruined it for everyone. :-|

In Austin, there are damn few bike lanes, lots of big trucks and vans, and mindless dips*** drivers.  The sidewalk is the only semi-safe path, several people are killed annually in accidents and hit-and-runs.  There are a lot of illegals with cars and no license or training, which makes it worse!  The smart thing to do is ride to the bus, bus to destionation, and ride the rest of the way.

The general high level of inebriation doesn't help any.  College kids, tourists, foreigners all party and drive.  It's stupid.  If they just killed themselves, it'd be ok, but it never works out that way. :-(

I think drinking and driving should be considered attempted murder!

...ahh you must be referring to the "Critical Mass" which we had here in Portland for a while as well. I liked to call them something else not fit to write here.  They were actually the catalyst for motorists' deep animosity towards cyclists for years as they'd bang their fists on car bonnets, kick fenders, and spat on windscreens while blocking traffic during the height of the afternoon commute.  They eventually were forced to disband by the city which rescinded their permit (good riddance).  However that still did not discourage individuals to continue their discourteous behaviour and I still see incidents of cyclists getting in the face of motorists because they felt their space was "violated" or like I mentioned flipping the middle finger if you called them out for their careless, rude, and selfish behavior.  There was even one incident where a cyclist, (who felt he was endangered because a car came with in a foot of him), tossed one of those Crypto locks back at it which hit and shattered the windscreen and narrowly missing the the person in the passenger seat.  Said cyclist has still not been found to this day as was another who blew a red light forcing a bus driver to make a panic stop with a standing load, thus causing riders standing in the aisle to be thrown to the floor.

All this talk about biking is stirring up some memories .....when I was living in Cutler Ridge FLA. ,second husband wrecked 3 cars in a 9 month period(crack head) and when he wrecked the last one asked me what kind of car I was going to get next .I pointed to my bicycle and said" meeet the new car !!" He threw a hissy fit , but I rode that poor thing for 3 years to work ,got rid of him and rode until I got all the bills caught up ,in that 3 years I had cars play chicken with me ,got shot in the leg with a pellet gun and had plastic soda bottles thrown at me ,I was really glad to finally get a car .Haven't been able to talk myself into getting back on a bike since .....

In Florida, the law is that cars must pass bicycles by no less than three feet.  Yeah, right! frown  Some drivers must have small feet and everything that that implies.

Amen!! I actually got  to a point where I rode facing traffic so I could see them coming and get out of the way ,a cop stopped me once to explain I was suppose to go with traffic ,I explained to him the reasons why I wasn't and he was nice enough to understand and let me go without a ticket .

That poor bike of mine had pedal brakes no gears ,double baskets on the back basket on the handle bars,I zip tied 2 flashlights to the front basket and had blinky lights from the dollar store on the sides and the back ,with old CDs tucked into the spokes on both tires ,and for awhile I had a wind chime dangling off the back basket,my kids thought I was nuts ,I just hoped it made people see me ,cause I left the house at 7 am and then left work after 8pm ,so was riding in the dark alot ,but I could get a good load of groceries on that sucker and kept 4 bungie cords to tie things down ,1 heavy duty lock and 6 dollar store bike locks ,when I parked it ...figured if nothing welse I'd make somebody work to steal it ..

...mine is a fully tricked out 1982 Specialised Stump Jumper I bought at a yard sale for 35$ (I've had offers of up to 800$ just for the frame alone, hence I saving up for one of those "New York City" locks). Put a couple hundred into it to make it one brute of a commuting bike with a new rear cluster, the largest outer chain ring I could find (has a 53 - 13 ratio in 24th gear), brakes with long curved shoes, double wall rims (to handle Portland's potholed streets), and custom comfort end grips for the handlebars (which are straight instead of the "rams horn" type).

I also bought a fairly expensive dual halogen with a rechargeable battery as well as high intensity tail light. Sadly the battery charager went south and the light set is no longer made (the lights and battery are still good, just can't charge it up anymore).  I would get numerous comments on how bright it was and even had oncoming cars flash their brights at me occasionally to turn my "high beam" off.  It was made for nighttime trail riding so it had to be bright and cast a good long beam. What sold me on it was one fellow 's testimonial where he took a spill and his bike ended up in a creek with the lights completely submerged and they were still working. Figured if it could endure that it could handle Portland rain.

I also had these dual mode LED wrist straps that I attached to a pair pf gloves (the on off buttons in the palms of my hands) which I could turn on and off so my hand signals were visible in the dark.  Why nobody has ever come out with a good set of LED turn signals/brake lights still confuses me.  I basically know how it would have to be built and work, but don't have the technical expertise (or dexterity in my hands anymore) to make a set myself.

I was in a bike store one day and looking through a catalogue came across this jacket that by day looked like a nice "normal" one but at night would reflect car headlights (the entire jacket) was waterproof, and wasn't "bike geeky" like those florescent green and orange ones (that make one look like a member of a city road crew), so I wouldn't feel embarrassed walking into a pub or restaurant wearing it.  I need to get one of these.

Did see (and hear) one really neat accessory the other day, an electronic horn that sounds more like a car horn and is very audible. Need one of those for riding in the city when brain dead pedestrians jaywalk or cross against the light directly in front of me and make me have to swerve to dodge them (so far, luckily not into a car next to me).

Complaint:  Weatherman predicts snow here tomorrow afternoon through monday. no

Non-complaint: It's Tuesday again and I had a great lunch at Red Lobster, remembered to stop at KMart for necessities, stopped at the drug store to take advantage of super sale on Easter chocolate.  ...Mmmm, chocolate...  And even after all that, my budget is healthy and it looks like I'll even have another $$$ left over to put into savings when I get my SS check in two weeks.  However, things come in cycles and I expect some disaster is aiming right at me.  "Bad luck feeds on healthy savings accounts".

...in my former college town of Stevens Point 6" of snow forecast.  In Milwaukee the worst combination: ice, sleet, then snow. on top of that.  Makes me reconsider going back there even if housing and living costs are lower than here.  Stevens Point will be down into the single digits for lows later this week with 2° above zero (F) forecast for Caturday morning (that's more like January than April temperatures).

Here 50s and liquid, not frozen water from the sky later today into tonight and through tomorrow with a high near 60° and mid 50s to low 60s the rest of the week with off and on showers.  That's more like what spring weather should be.

When I got up today it was 44f.   A half hour later it was 43f.  I went out of town and by the time I got back it was 39f.  It's supposed to get warmer as the day grows, not colder!

Where I live we have actually had cases where there was an accident where DUI was involved and someone died that the driver was charged and convicted of murder.

Complaint:  Not unexpected, but it's snowing again. sad   I hate digging out the car and risking the driveway after a snow.  And here I was planning on going to an "Open House" 50% off sale at an auction warehouse tomorrow.  I'm sure I could have found something that I didn't think I could live without. indecision

I thought that you had sworn off auctions.  Or is it only online auctions?

If you wait a while, the snow may just melt off your car.

54f here right now.  And it's before noon!  A cold front is coming tonight or tomorrow, though.

Not really the same thing. You can have strep throat even if your tonsils have been removed. https://www.healthline.com/health/tonsillitis-vs-strep-throat

I have sort of sworn off off-line auctions, however, the event I described is a 50% off sale of items stored in a local auction house's warehouse.  They have two new estates worth of stuff coming in and they need to get rid of stuff in their warehouse to make room for the new stuff.  i.e out with the old old stuff and in with the new old stuff.   So, I just walk in and if I find something that I think I can't live without and it doesn't break my budget, I pull it from the shelf and pay cash for it.  I get to touch it, and inspect it, and love it and hold it and take it home with me. yes  No ifs, ands, or buts, and no refunds. indecision

Complaint:  Arghhhh... something just clattered on my porch.  A quick check revealed that the snow is really coming down now and the wind is blowing it sideways and hard enough to blow over the snow shovel leaning against the house on the porch.  Bang, clatter, rattle. no
