Continuing Genesis Generation X2
First of all, I wish to assure everyone that I am both aware and deeply saddened by the passing of Dimension3D. I offer my condolences to his family and loved ones, and hope that he is at peace (oh, please let me be remembering the gender right!)
However (and at the risk of sounding incredibly selfish and callous), there is another matter I would like to discuss. It's in regards to Dimenion3D's marvelous creation, Genesis Generation X2 and its add-ons. I for one have found it incredibly useful and convenient, being able to so effortlessly transfer morphs between the various versions of Genesis, to mix and match morphs from various versions of Genesis with other products to come up with new and interesting creations. I would dearly love to see this produyct being continue, and I'm sure that there are many who feel similarly.
So the question is, is it possible? Has anyone contacted Dimension3D's friends and/or family about taking up his sword and continuing Genesis Generation X2 into the next generation?

I have been thinking of trying to make something similar to Generation x but not exactly a copy. I had some programming classes about a decade ago. I am waiting for my new computer to come in which should be a few weeks. I am not saying any promises as I am just thinking about it at this point.
I am not in front of a computer but might figure it out soon which is between April and Daz Soon. First I would need the computer then find a free programming suite as in free as free lemonade and also free as in free speech and free to use the end product as I wish (aka distribution is not limited)
I am given to understand that GenX2 is no longer necessaryr
as there is a way to move legacy shapes to G3/8 within Daz studio

Singular Blues has develloped a script for G3 to G8 to do most of what GenX did. The thread with information on the sccript (and other methods) is here
Think that the main thing with GenX2 was that it made the process of morph transfer so much easier, it was just click, drag, click done.. It was a sad day for all when we all learned of Dimension3D's passing and they will be sorely missed..
Interesting thread though your link to it does not directly send you to the page, you have to copy and paste it to get it to work..
So what is the link to the script thread?
Found this, and still looking through Google results

I think this is the thread you are after: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/176271/morphs-from-g3-to-g8
Check my sig. First link.
That said, currently the Prototype.dse is broken. The PrototypeVerbose.dse which is meant for trouble shooting, and will fill up your log file, is functional. probably by the time most people read this is, I'll have updated, but if you run protoype and it doesn't work, the first thing to do is run prototype verbose, anyway.
The second thing to do is contact me in the thread in my sig, so I can troublshoot. Also, the last few pages will tend to cover what aspects of the script are still buggy, as fair warning. It's not perfect, and it's a long way to go before it is really ready for prime time. But aside from finger nails and an arm issue that gets obvious with toon morphs, it is functional.
Opps, sorry, fixed the link
Agreed. I did appreciate just how simple GenX2 made transferring morphs between generations. Not only that, I like how it made transferring many morphs from one figure to another, and I'm the sort who loves mixing and matching different things. Say, for instance, I felt like taking the base morph for Monique 7 and the body of Freak 5 and Girl 7 and using them with Genesis 2 Female(s) so I can utilized the Creature Creator accessories like the bull legs and horns. GenX2 made that very much feasible. And as such, I would love to see it continued, if at all possible.
I doubt it's possible to "continue" it per se. Maybe someone can rebuild it from scratch. I dunno.
Possible it the wrong word. It suggests impossible, and I actually don't think a person with the right set of skills would be unable to reverse engineer the method.
I mean to say I don't think a person with the right set of skills is aware of the issue and interested in solving it. I know I don't have those skills, and that means the work I'm doing will be differnt to GenX if I can get it to work. In part, I'm embracing that, making something simpler. In the end that may mean GenX is capable of things my script can't do.
That's a long way off. At the moment, my script is one of two "software" metheds I know of for support G8 in any way, and the only one that is automated. But it is still alpha, so it has issues. It will never be perfect because I am not perfect, but there is one outstanding issue that all means of transfer to G8 seem to suffer, and I won't be satisifed if I can't fix it. So, in that sense I do have to pat myself on the back a bit. As automated means to transfer many morphs to G8, quickly, while supporting G8 morphs being sent to G3 and having cross gender capability, my script is best there is.
Because it's the only thing that can do all that.
Shortly after Ralf's (Dimension3D) passing, I communicated with his brother and expressed interest in somehow facilitating the continuation of GenX2. His brother said that he did not see how that would be possible as the family did not have full access to his files and they could not just turn (or even sell) his data over to someone else for them to go rummaging.
As a result, I am transferring all desired pre-G3 morphs before a new DS version breaks GenX2, and I will choose to be satisfied with Genesis 3 for them (unless someone packages and further streamlines SingularBlues' script for G3toG8 into something vaguely similar to GenX2).
I see.
Hmm...if only it were possible to read the actual script for Genesis Generation X2 and its add-ons. I mean the actual lines of code that form the script. It seems logical to believe that, if we could study the actual lines of code for the program, its add-ons and how they apply to the different versions of Genesis, we could reverse-engineer a new add-on based on them that would be compatible with Genesis 8.
I have a possible guess as to why they said that, and it is very understandable that they would refuse.. I think that the only way there will ever be another plugin that does this sort of thing will have to built from the ground up.. And that will take time considering the differences there are between Genesis 3 and Genesis 8..
My understanding is that GenX is not a script, but a plug-in. If you look at the files that are installed, this includes a dll file, which as such is written as a program (probably C++) that is compiled against the DS 4.5 SDK. Without access to the source code, any attempt to reverse engineer the process will be very difficult. If Ralf's family are unable to locate this source code, it means continuation of these product would be near impossible.
I would have to build from the ground up. hmmmm, maybe an open source project might work?
I spent some time checking around, and it turns out that there is a way of extracting a decompiled version of the source code from a dll file. Freeware such as ILSpy or dotPeek apparently would do the job. Would such a decompiled version of the source code do the job?
is one allowed to use the decompiled code????
The implication is that the family is trying to find a way to get the code for someone to use
Well, at the risk of being selfish, I do hope that they find it and someone does continue it. I've found Genesis Generations to be incredibly useful, and would like to continue using it in the future.
It was already possible for earlier figures, and GenX2 was still pretty useful...
If the owner of the program gives you permission for it then yes. Good luck with that, though, automatically generated code without documentation is often a nightmare to understand...
Oh, I'm not decompiling. Haven't done any coding in the past 20 or so years (and before, it was strictly amateur level at best...... no education at all in it....)
well we know there are certainly ways to do it manually as I did so before GenX and later with Genesis 3&8 myself before Singular Blues's script using base resolution clone shapes by various PA's and morphloader.
The scripts and plugins just make it much easier and streamlined.
The more gifted people who write codes and scripts can possibly replicate what we do manually but need a way to either access those clones made by various PA's including Slosh and Valhzeimer perhaps having them as a required product or create their own clones.
Maybe even a standalone program much like Crossdresser.
