I opened Max when I meant to open Maya.  Then I was thinking of using DS so I went to Max.

Vlender is insanely powerful but the UI was developed by engineer, not UU/Human factor people.   Last time I used it I got a headache from grinding my jaw.  Someone needs to redesign the UI, but that's a year-long full-time project.  Not to mention many users used to the UI have screamed when they threaten to revamp it.  Sad.

It's open software...maybe that should be your next project...and Human geared UI.

Snowed in and busying myself today fixing a sick Win10 machine.  One of my own. sad  All of a sudden it just started flashing screen about every 5 seconds and when I reboot it would display message "cannot start remote desktop..."  ???  Scary!  I tried all of Win10's wonderful fix-it utilities, like "Reset", and "Repair" and even "Restore" from both backup and from system image,  all to no avail.  I ran diagnostics that were fat dumb and happy.  My personal files are on a separate disk so I'm not worried and besides that machine is mostly a test machine anyway.  Nothing critical on it.  Finally gave up and used Win10-Home DVD to rebuild from scratch after re-formatting the "C:" drive.  Took hours to finish the updating! frown  Finally after the last automatic upgrade I was all ready to login and there was nothing on the screen.  surprise  Finally figured out that when the system finally got all of its software installed it switched the primary video output to the HDMI cable despite it being connected to my TV and not selected for viewing, leaving the DVI cable monitor just staring blankly at me.  That wasted a good hour of reboots and head scratching. angry  Finally figured it out and all seems well now.  I think that computer is flakey.  It's an old Vista machine upgraded to Win7 and then to Win8 and finally Win10 and the hardware is nearly 10 years old, but it does have a dual-core CPU, 8GB RAM, a modern Nvidea graphic card and new 1TB storage.  Worked fine under Win7 but the Win10 on it has always been a little flakey.  It wigs out now and then. sad

Picture below is my "Network Cockpit".

What models are your APCs?  I use a Smart-UPS C1000.  The laptop and router and other thigns are on an old Office UPS...still going after 16 years!

They're all APC UPSs and the lettering on the front says "Back-UPS Pro 1000".  Bought each of them on deep discount from OfficeMax.  (I watch for sales all year long.)  Two of them are active,  one is idle.  One of the active ones is about 6 years old, replaced its battery about 3 years ago.  The other active one is about 3 years old.  And the third is about 6 years old and was exhibiting some operational issues after 3 years and I spotted a good sale, so I bought a new UPS unit and retired the questionable one.  So it's been sitting idle for three years with it's battery discarded until I get in the mood to try it again with a new battery.  And it's time for me to think about getting new batteries for all of them again ($$$) sad.  But I'm a firm believer in UPSs.  They've saved my bacon a couple times.  Summer thunderstorms around here are sometime quite violent and drop in on us from over the lake (Lake Erie) really quickly, and sometimes we get the remnants of hurricanes coming up from the Gulf area.  I've had the whole house flickering up & down like a yo-yo but the computers were fat, dumb & happy and I had plenty of time to clean up my work and power them down.

Yup, I've been using APC for many years, now.  Ever since I lost the boot sector on a C: drive from a brownout that lasted maybe a second.  I didn't know what could have happened.  I brought it to CompUSA and the tech said it had physical damage on the boot sector, probably from the head bouncing during a brownout.  I hadn't told him that it had happened, so I was amazed at his deduction.  Ever since then, I always have an APC UPS on my computer.  I even have a desk lamp plugged into it.  I don't usually turn it on unless I really need the light.  But yes, it has saved my butt a few times over the years.  I've upped the coverage as I've added things to the computer, upgraded the motherboard and/or GPU, added RAM.

That boot sector incident, it happened at a time when I was using...ummm...forgot the name of it, but it compressed your drive.  This was way before the days that the OS itself would compress your drives.  Oh, Stacker!  That was it.

I've got another UPS (an offbrand 500kvm unit) upstairs in my bedroom for an old WinXP machine up there that I use to watch NetFlix through.  I've got my old 32" flatscreen TV as a monitor and get the signal through a USB WiFi dongle.  I don't run the TV through the UPS. But I do protect the computer and I also have a portable radio and a small LED table lamp plugged into it as emergency news and lighting if the power went out I'd have full light to see to get down the stairs (or out the window).  I also keep a couple flashlights up there but I like the idea of reaching over to turn on the table lamp and not have to fumble with a flashlight while I'm groggy.

Damn, that one's going to need a new battery soon too. frown

I'm using an APC as well. Too much stacked in front of it to find number, but it's a tower.
When the battery went out I bought a big sealed deep-draw marine battery and wired it in
to replace the factory one. (Outside the case, of course).
My tech friends said I'd ruin the APC, yadayada, but it's chugging along just fine.
Cost little more than the factory battery and will run my graphics computer for 5+ hours.

..hoping that doesn't happen.  That's pretty much what we ended up with for the Yule holiday so I just stayed in all holiday weekend.

I heard we are the hottest continent on the planet right now is made me feel a little guilty that everywhere else has to get so cold, or maybe it doesn’t work like that but we sure haz pwnd the heat\ the past few days and upside is getting out on the bay in near glassy conditions for a change. Haz sunburn tho, will live :)

...117°F in Sydney the other day.  Broke and 80 year old record.

The Southern Ocean on one side and mountain ranges on the other helps us keep cool, Sydney is more or less at the mercy of whatever winds blow in from the centre ;)

    pear tree fermenting?

Been pumping a lot of water into the garden outbound the pear tree this year cos water use is unrestricted right now so it looks pretty good. The big tropical shade plants in our garden have been flowering so it must be hot, This year we’re trying to grow rhubarb, crazy brave in this heat it isn’t looking too clever right now ;)

But you've broken the warranty.  It's good to have backup power, but the equipment replacement warranty is fantastic...when it isn't voided.
