Really? I remember devouring Dragonlance as a kid and neither me nor my fellow nerds even batted an eye at the obviously female names of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Then again, at the time we mostly read things based on a cool backcover description (disclaimer: not dismissing bigotry as a whole, just surprised that it applies to authors when I'd never heard anything of the sort).

You've come in during the later years so some gals were a bit braver I guess, in bucking the trends, and Tracy Hickman is a man, not a woman, with a neutral/ambiguous name. But I guarantee that Barbara Hambly and other females that wrote under their own name were not read as widely than if they had used an ambiguous or male name. It's a fact of life and our culture. Even Randall Garrett's wife wrote under his name/couple name (The Gandalara Cycle, a 7-book series), until admitting as a note on the last book of the series that he'd been in a coma and hadn't done anything but help with the initial outline.

  • Aave Nainen - female, SWAM and Goldtassel - both female. I thought Fisty was a male for a long time, but nope, also female. I have know quite a few people, both males and females with the names of Tracy or Kelly. The good one was a couple Tracy (male) married to Terri (female) and they loved to mess with telemarketers that called and didn't know who was who.

I now return you to your discussion on sales.

The December ‘sale’ was amazing not just because of glitches but because they gave away a phenomenal number of freebies, some of which were time limited products.  Think ‘12 days of Christmas’. There was also a glitchy Black Friday sale— though I’m still not convinced some of those glitches weren’t unannounced ‘doorbusters’

The PC+ sale last year had these things going on:

    * a BYOB of 8 for $3, mostly of older stuff, and not, I believe just PC+ items but some DOs. These selections were themed and changed every few days. You might have needed NR to trigger this but see below...

    * new PC+ freebie every few days

    * new PC+ release every day, which counted as ‘debut’ fot whatever sale discounting they had that day

    * 40% off instead of 30% off on Daz Originals

I participated heavily last year and still didn’t get everything I wanted; I’m hoping to pick up some of last year’s New Releases this year at re-discounted prices, like Jack’s lovely mausoleum. It is a serious library builder for newer members who aren’t scrupulous about shader flavor and have some budget to burn

As for Genesis 3... I dunno. I wouldn’t count on it since the super discounted stuff is older.  But maybe occasionally or maybe I’m wrong. But if you set your sights on expanding your props and sets library instead of characters/clothes you probably won’t be disappointed.

Maybe some of the Recycle pros could start that thread showing off old stuff rendered under Iray...? Would be very useful about now and pass the time.

I've had this sort of thing in mind, using the PA sale as a time to build up utilities and Iray shaders most of all. Seeing what people have done re-shading older props, clothing, etc. It's pretty phenomenal.

I went aheaded and started that thread. I'm not one of the big experimenters myself, but I'll see what I can dig up.

(I did yesterday with some forums digging discover how to repurpose some gorgeous 3DL Lantios skies as HDRI-style environment maps.)

It floored me to recently read that OOT is a guy in his mid twenties! He's been doing this for quite a while. Guess he started as a teenager. What talent!

Oot is a guy?  Wow, another wrong guess on my end.  LoL

    Love his work!

Its not neccassarily snubbing them but those of us who have been around a while have them all and it then feels like we aren't really getting any benefitfrom our membership, its one of the reason that I don't miss it much.

I agree with @scorpio To me,  the PC+ sale tends to benefit people who don't have many products (and at this point,  I couldn't even build any bundles) or who have quite a bit of the PC+ items. There tends to be a lot of poses released, and I'd like to see more sets. And just speaking for myself, I don't want to see any more bikinis!

Does anyone know what date the PC+ sale started last year? I want to look at my orders then I can specifically give some examples. It'd be fun if we all did that. I may also have my emails which show the exact item price (orders won't.)

Cool! I bookmarked your thread. :)

  • If it is possible, I'd be all for a clothing and prop and hair auto converter that could take multiple sets of older clothes and fit them to g8 and save them as new g8 clothes.

I bought Platinum Club Anniversary 2016 - Mega Pack 1 on 10/10. No other way of telling for me, tho.

Right! Megapacks! Forgot to mention THAT benefit. Those were... big packs of.... some number of old things.... for some fixed price.... $5 or something? Or were they free? OK, help me out here, I'm old.

There was at least one free bundle, there were also bundles of several related PC items for less than the normal ttoal price of the items which changed through the month.

I got my half-price PC membership on Oct. 9 2016. That's when it all started. My credit card threatened suicide, but I bled it to death before it had a chance.

I did a bit of analysis/showed the promos in several posts in my Art Studio thread. If you'd like to see it, go to this one and then there's another one down from that.

For newbies and others who may not know (kinda impossible if you have the deals app and look at forum threads lol)   remember we showcase products over there and it comes in handy when multiple stores go on sale. You'll see a lot of examples, and read the pros and cons of the products. We have five years worth of contributions to sort through- great contributing forum members who also have their own threads showing you the products. The Art Studio threads don't get mentioned enough and they should, that's where you can actually chat back and forth about the work.

We also encourage folks to ask questions about a product (you'll see that if you just go a couple posts up from the linked one) and between the regulars on the thread, someone usually has it. (First please read the product description, and only ask what isn't obvious, or ask for opinions on how people like it, or render times, etc. ) And think about starting your own Art Studio thread if you want some chit chat about your work. (Most of us already have a gallery. It's not the same interaction. It's harder to get noticed there due to the huge number of renders every day.)

Honestly I'm also expecting a number of IRAY updates to various old PC+ stuff this time around. Last time we got quite a bit of that, most of which I skipped because I had no plan to use carnival rides and other similar stuff. I regretted it!

I am poking through my email: I got a flier for a 'mid month catchup' on 10/16 (heh) and a flyer for 'end of sale' catchup on 11/11. I actually have every flier from the sale....

Also, I was wrong: 10% extra off your entire cart for the duration of the sale. But that's the kind of detail I can't be sure will return. Looking at some old reciepts I'm seeing that the Megapacks were $10, that I got Eva 7 for $2 at one point, and that I was getting dozens of items for around $10. I'm going to go render some of the older things in iray right now, in fact, and will post elsewhere.

Oh, and don't forget there where also larger bundles last year too. Where they bundled up a dozen or so items and gave them away for free (I think we got a free bundle every week), as well as other bundles that they sold for around $12 if I remember correctly.

  • NovicaNovica Posts: 23,924

Here's another post that shows three or four orders and the discounted items' prices. For each order, the trend I was seeing was having 1-2 items that were 50-60% off (or more) that were required to trigger the lower prices. However, I'm seeing quite a few freebies scattered in. One day they had a lot of freebies, I didn't post that day's order, they were mostly from the other site.

  • dreamfarmerdreamfarmer Posts: 2,128

Is that when they also had the weekly features of a DO Feature Character? I'm seeing that I picked up not just Eva 7 for $2 but also Karen 7 for less than $5, and I remember some sale or another that had something like that.

No offense to the PAs, but I'm all "PA Festival"ed out. Bring on PC+ sales!

People are just more inclined to take male authors seriously. It's cultural. {The common belief is....} Women authors write romance and boring stuff about chicks. Men write exciting adventures. You'll find plenty of women who say they prefer male authors, but not very many men who prefer female authors. And reviewers who don't try to offset bias tend to pick more men's names than women's names to review.

Yeah that "common belief" irritates me to no end. I've spent a lifetime in male-dominated fields with no huge issues (military, broadcasting, web development, I.T, etc.) I write romantic comedy across genres and have plenty of male readers who enjoy the books. I'm glad that at least some people are able to look at someone's work on its merits, rather than what set of genitals the person has.

As far as PAs, I love getting to know them through their products, and then learn more about them. It would be nice to see some interviews and features on PAs here on DAZ, like they do on Rendo. It floored me to recently read that OOT is a guy in his mid twenties! He's been doing this for quite a while. Guess he started as a teenager. What talent!

Wow, OOT is in his mid-twenties??? For some reason, I thought OOT was more than one person. I remember his products, from I think about 10 years ago!  (Could it have been a mother/son team and the son took over?) And, I know this sounds terrible, but I think he is one of the few males who can really do beautiful female faces. I know this sounds sexist toward males, but I always thought the most beautiful faces were created by females. Even in comic books. I'm often appalled how unattractive and masculine-looking some female faces are, even on cover art.

I think many little girls, including myself, start drawing girls at a young age, maybe as paper dolls, maybe to create their own fashion designs or hairstyles, while boys prefer to create monsters, cars, etc... Of course that is cliche thinking, but I still think predominantly true among straight young boys and girls. From age 5 to 12, I think all I did was draw girls, hair, fashion. I only drew boys if I was creating a paper doll boyfriend for the girls LOL. But of course, there are many male artists who grow up to create stunningly beautiful women as well, but, IMHO, females are in general, better at creating female faces and especially better at creating makeup! And before everyone yells, I know not every female has to beautiful, but hey, it's art, not real life, and all faces are interesting and have beauty to them, but some, both male and female, you look at and go "Wow! She/he is stunning!!!"

I THINK both Pretty3D and Mytilus may be male and I think they create just stunning (and very sexy!) female characters, although the faces may be a bit stylized for some, I still love them. One of my favorite PAs who creates IMO, the most gorgeous yet still realistic female characters is Freja who seems to get relatively little recognition or discussion here, but I jump when one of her characters go on sale and cry when they all go on sale because I can't afford them all... crying She has some of the best promos too IMO.

But, in general, it does not surprise me at all that there are so many female PAs, because, in a way, DS/Poser is like playing with Barbies in the computer at a higher (and much more difficult!) level. PAs are creating hair, make-up, fashion, a typical little girl's fantasy life! Personally, I'm more surprised when a great female character creator or female fashion clothing artist is a male!

I've only been around here for three+ years, so this is my 4th PC Anninversary sale. Prior to last year, there were the $2.99 Crazy Deals with 8 themed items, and the $9.95 Anniversary bundles with 10 items.

They really changed things up last year.:

Daz introduced BYOB instead of the Crazy Deals, with pages of older, $1.99 content to choose from, (as was mentioned earlier,) and that content changed every three days or so. It worked really well, at least on me. My records show I purchased 15 BYOBs last year! I have invoices for $2.99 in my order history, so I'm going to say a new release wasn't necessary to purchase BYOBs, though you couldn't get more than one per order as a 9th byob item in the cart lost discounts on all of them.

The first "Anniversary" bundle was priced at $12.95. That didn't go over well, in spite of the fact previous $10 bundles had ten $1.99 items and the $13 bundle had mostly $4 and $5 items, (regular PC+ prices, not retail.) The rest of the bundles were $9.95, but there was a compromise. Maybe fewer of the more expensive items? I don't remember. I only purchased three of them, as the other bundles had too many things I already owned to be cost effective. (Which is why the BYOB worked so well on me.)

As for other details of the sales, I seem to recall every year was different from the year before. Maybe someone who keeps all the old emails can weigh in on details of the daily sales.

Daz is seldom explicit about how long a sale is active. However, in my experience, when they say it's a "weekend" catchup sale, it lasts the entire weekend. I've seen a weekend sale start on Thursday, (once,) or Friday, (many times,) but I've never seen a weekend sale end on a Saturday. They usually end Daz Midnight on Sunday, except when they are extended another day. As the PC Anniversary sale will start immediately after the PA Festival ends, I'm confident this weekend sale will end Sunday.

However, Daz has been known to change the details of a weekend sale. With all the complaining earlier, we might just see the older stores back in the Mega Fast Grab, (the same stores that were featured in MFG throughout the sale, but not including Aave Nainen, Sloshwerks, ironman13, Sickleyield or any other prolific PA.) If you see something you really want, don't wait until tomorrow for a better deal. If a better deal does materialize tomorrow, contact Customer Service for a refund of the difference.
