Here's how I installed everything, starting with a completely clean install of Daz:
1) Created a folder on my dedicated Daz drive called "Daz", then created folders inside if for all the various 3d programs (Daz, Install Manager, Carrara, Hexagon, etc)
2) Installed DIM to it's folder
3) Created a "Daz Library" folder in the top level Daz folder to place all of the DIM installations, and a Manual Library at the same level for all of my non-dim compatible installs.
4) Configured all of the DIM installation options in Install manager to point to their respective folders inside the Daz folder.
5) Installed Studio and it's requirements
6) Configured my content libraries to point to both the Daz Library and the Manual Library folders, and set everything else in Content Manager to go to "Daz" as well. This keeps connect stuff from installing on C:. I also rerouted the temp folder, but I don't remember off the top of my head where that setting is and I'm at work now so I dont' have access to Studio to check
7) Moved all of my manual installs into my download folder, then created an "Extract" folder to hold the ones I was extracting, and a "Working" folder inside that one to extract them to. If you have a lot of manual installs, I recomend only doing a few at a time to make sorting their contents out easier. There is going to be a major mishmash of stuff in that working directory, but I recomend either treating it as the real Library folder and putting all of the various folders (runtime, people, environment, etc) in there or making a dedicated library folder there to move everything to. I extracted each set into "working", then went through and made sure all of the content went into the correct folders. Doing it this way I was able to just move everything at once out of "Working" into "Manual LIbrary"
8) Went and had fun with my new, easier to use content libraries.
Now in content manager I have a separate stack for all of the Dim installed stuff (most of which shows up in Smart Content so I barely use content manager for it) and a completley separate entry for all of my stuff that DOESN"T show in smart content. I'm finding a lot of stuff I had completely forgotten about now. I'm also gradually going through and creating categories for everything to break it down into more specific groupings.
thanks @dragotx well I've done what you wrote slowly reinstalling now I put all my folders onto my D drive which is raided with my F drive which may be why it's done this my connect is installing onto F at least my C drive is being used now - only installed few things so far starter essentials and some of the 7's and 8's BUT - CONNECT is still ruling I've downloaded via dim BUT inside studio the stuff is showing their icons but I still gotta download again via connect to use the content also nothing showing still in Content Library menu which wouldn't bother except for the fact a lot of content mostly older stuff and 3rd party donn't show in smart
As long as the icon isn't greyed out, you can ignore the download arrow for connect. If it's installed through Dim it should be good to go, downloading through connect will just install a second copy of the item to your machine. I've noticed there are a few things in my library that DIM didn't see to download, those show up as a colorless icon at the bottom of the smart content pages. But if it's a full color icon, then you don't need to hit it with connect.
well the main icons for the stuff I downloaded via dim are colour but when you click on them for the contents the icons are a picture frame with a triangle with ! in it click that says item not found so back on the main colour picture you still gotta click download via connect so 200+gb guess becomes 400+gb downloads I have 200 GB allowence a month + 2 free topups if needed so trying to work this out wondering since for some reason connect installed on my F drive when I installed both versions of Studio on D if I uninstall just the programs and reinstalled onto F if that will stop the double download and show content in my content library as well as smart library and not have to uninstall reinstall content already downloaded again
ok weird thing unistalled the full? version of 64 daz the other one other than beta, reinstalled it same place it was before on D drive also downloaded installed 32 bit version but installed that on F stuff didn't appear on that except some g2 but started up the 64 one and what I said before about stuff downloaded main icon in colour sub menus nothing well those now showing and can use still have download menu poses downloaded work except expression so may still have to do update meta and connect download on those or the figures to work had to do that before oh and some content menu showing which is now on the other side
I can't speak to the 32bit version, I've never used it. But it sounds like for the most part everything else is working, aside from a few connect items? Those expressions may be connect only, I've run into a few that I had to install through connect on my machines as well.
It sounds as if your DIM and DS content paths may not match.
When I get home from work tonight I'll get some screenshots of my content path settings and post them up so you can see how I've got it set, it's working great for me.
Ok, here is the screenshot of my library settings. D: is my main Daz drive and is where I have everything installed to. X: is my data drive and the shared directory there is where I have my render library, save all of my scene files and characters, and have utilities like SkinBuilder and SceneOptimizer putting their outputs into it.
On D: the "Daz Library" is where DIM installs everything to, Manual LIbrary is where I put all of my non-DIM files after I've extracted and organized them, and Connect LIbrary is for Connect.
With this setup, the Daz3d folder in My Documents on C: is nothing but an empty folder tree.
You should have the paths that are under Studio Formats under Poser Formats and there is no point of having the Connect path under Poser Formats.
Thanks, I hadn't noticed I messed one of the paths for poser
done another full clean uninstall trying to copy your setup and went through all the submenus in dim where things installed think had couple set wrong last few times
I never even though of making screenshots for DIM, sorry about that. DIM can definitly be easy to miss a setting on, there are several ones buried in there. I'll try to remember to get some screenshots of it as well tonight
And here are the settings i used in DIM to install everything through it
cool thanks think that is how I set the new paths too so may have gotten it right this time thank you btw I had a few other paths listed previously I deleted but previously I think I had the wrong one daz library path selected in that drop down menu in first pic there are just so many toooo many sub menus for install in dim and in studio itself not a problem if you install on C and the defaults but if you have to install on another drive like lost now bit of a headache think for D5 should make it more smart install friendly where you can pick a drive once and it will correctly install everything to that drive itself instead of us having to go through everything be good for new users too all my daz progs folder i installed to called Daz Programs. 32 bit Studio not really that usefull not iray friendly so a lot of that content no detail and of course no iray render options good though for those for whatever reason only want 3delight
Cool, glad I could help. And yes, a smarter installer is something I would love to see in a future version of the program. I'd love to be able to just tell it install all programs to D:/Daz Programs and all content to D:/Daz Library and be done with it. And for the content for non daz programs, like PHotoshop, it really should be able to pull all the information it needs from the registry with no input from the user.
had some glitches started with g3 essentials first g3f didn't show so went via connect and got her in, went back into dim and studio re/added links think still got some wrong but just through dim installed some axes opened studio saw main icon in colour but with arrow checked sub menus but everything showed up and works AND my content library is working again :)
so far so good but gonna take it slowly reinstalling may still have to use connect not just for connect stuff but previously with some products some sections don't install or work properly unless you go via connect mostly poses and even more so expressions
gotta work out the proper setup of 3rd part stuff what folders gotta create and where how to set up each section some come with sub folders but not always properly done or are folders within folders within folders sometimes real mess
huh ok hicup gotta work out what different g3e all icons in colour no arrows in the studio public build but clicking on anything can not find file does not exist -- but in Pro no problem
fixed public build went back removed links and opened and copied pro links into public build and now g3e is working in public build too - slow baby steps :)
gotta try connect only downloads got anyone know how to work out what products we have that are connect only is there a list of these products somewhere
I've occasionally had DIM installs that I had to reinstall to get to work right, that might be what you ran into. For the 3rd party stuff what I did is look at ones I know are set up right, and used them as a map to get all of the other ones set up right as well. If you have a lot, it' easier to only work on a few products at a time.
that's what I'm doing with dim at moment taking baby steps make sure what I install is working right
I would like to say one thing connect does have an advantage over dim is in studio you can see the thumbnail pictures of your products to download whereas in dim you only see a title which does not always give a clue what it is but that's something they could include in futre version of dim having thumbnail pics but then guess they'd just say use connect so yeah in that way connect is good but I still prefer dim first
In Dim right-click on name of product to get the option to download thumbnail.
not sure where the thumbnail was downloaded to do notice some products hover over shows a pic though
slowly downloading installing see the arrow on the installed stuff though and right click install option appears in menu but can still use stuff
so far reinstalled 12.6 gb, with so far 239.8 Gb+ left to reinstall so far
Yeah, if you're using DIM, you'll still get the download arrow on the icon, that's connect wanting to get it's own copy, which will duplicate the data on your machine. As long as the icon is fully colored, you're good to go, just ignore the arrow until Daz itself says "hey, I'm missing something you told me to use, want me to go snag it?".
well just installed via dim the Tasmanian Tiger and yeah he appeared to be ok except could not find anyway to open his mouth so did the update meta and install via connect and he is fixed kinda looking like connect wants control might be easier just using that to install content don't know if any of the other stuff downloaded via dim is missing anything
Huh, that's odd. It's my understanding the products are supposed to be exactly the same accross both DIM and Connect. I wonder if they forgot to flag an update for it to be applied to DIM.
