...ugh, was at the market getting food for the next week when I bent down wrong and triggered that recurring pinched nerve in my back. In total pain right now using extra pillows on the chair to make it a bit more comfortable. Can barely bend down to reach the second lower shelf in the fridge (so much for a beer tonight which is on the bottom shelf).  Took some ibuprofen (which I only do in severe situations like this as it is bad for us older folks) and it helps a little.  Was planning on making my special street tacos but ended up doing homemade garlicky cheesy mac instead. as I didn't have to stand around chopping things up.

Needed to pull a jacket out of the closet for the first time in a couple months as it felt really cold and raw outside today.  Didn't get much in the way of rain, maybe enough to dampen the pavement a bit and that was it. Local weather service made it sound like it was going to be a deluge with localised flood advisories and all. Pulled out a few extra blankets for the night as I like having the windows open to get fresh air (something of a rarity the last month and a half).

Going to get even chillier by midweek with highs only in the upper 50s.  May have to get milka for hot cocoa.

Hearing the whistle of a steam locomotive in the distance, lovely sound, takes me back to my years as a child.  I beleive there was a weekend excursion as I heard it on Saturday morning as well.  If I wasn't so sore, I'd head up the block watch it pull into the station..

...don't know which is worse, trying to enter posts on my phone or trusting this lemon of a spell check service here. Already re-edited this post several times for typos that  it did not catch..

Jubjub bird?  I thought that Nightwish song was referencing something, now I know what XD

Once upon a time a song was heard
Giving birth to a child of earth and verse

    Together we slay another fright
Every Jubjub bird, spooks of the past
Close your eyes and take a peek
The truth is easy to see

    Very pretty song too~

Is it Fall already?  I thought that didn't happen until sometime after the 20th of September.

Possibly. There are two ways of measuring the seasons: Meterologically and Astronomically. (this is kinda the weather version of the difference between UTC and GMT)

Meterological seasons are determined by the annual temperature sycle. They are exactly three months long and run September-November (Autumn/Fall), December-February (Winter), March-May (Spring), June-August (Summer). They always start and end on the same date, which is handy.

Astronomical seasons are determined by the position of the Earth's orbit in relation to the sun, and the variation in day length causese by the tilt of the Earth's axis. They run from solstice (longest or shortest day) to equinox (literally "equal night", where day length and night length are the same). Technically, it's the point when the Earth crosses the celestial equator. So the seasons run from the Spring/Vernal equinox to the Summer solstice (Spring), the Summer solstice to the Autumnal/Fall equinox (Summer), the Autumn/Fall equinox to the Winter solstice (Autumn/Fall), and the Winter solstice to the Spring/Vernal equinox (Winter). The big problem with this is that the solstices and equinoxes move around by up to three days, partly because the year is 365.25 days long (why we get leap years), and partly because of time zones, meaning the date varies according to where you are in the world at that instant. The solstices and equinoxes are reversed for the southern hemisphere.

Contrary to XKCD, equinox is not "British for solstice".

So, meterological Autumn/Fall 2017 runs from September 1 to November 30, and astronomical Autumn/Fall 2017 runs from September 22 to December 20.

...well, last night was annoying to say the least .  Turned in early after taking some Advil as I was in such pain.  Finally was able to find a comfortable position and fell asleep only to be awakened around 01:30 by the building's fire alarm.  Apparently the person across the hall from my apartment was making toast and burned it however I suspect there was a little more to the story. First when I opened my door I saw a couple people leaving the apartment with their bikes. The hallway was also filled with smoke, and the few moments I was able to see into the unit when the door was open, it looked like a a lot more smoke than two pieces of toast would generate even if they were turned to charcoal. ANother perons form an apartment down the hall I spoke with said he saw something like 5 or 6 people enter the apartment earlier. Thinking someone might be unconscious from the smoke or whatever and that something might be still smouldering, I first felt the door to see if it was warm (it wasn't), then knocked on it loudly several times.

Needless to say we all had to head outside until the fire dept arrived and dealt with the issue.  Fearing the sprinkler system might be triggered I unplugged the computers and covered them the best I could.  It was no fun hobbling down five flights of staris with sharp twinges of pain in my back and down my legs.only to stand in teh cold in the drizzle outside (made sure to quickly slip my shoes on before I left).   When the all clear was finally given and the alarm turned off has to head back up the staris (wasn't sure if the lifts were unlocked yet), which was another painful experience.

After I got back to my place I had to open the windows and put the ceiling fan on high to try and get the smell of the smoke out.  Took about an hour to get comfortable enough to fall asleep again only to awaken coughing from time to time because of the smoke earlier.

What got me was how was the situation allowed to get so bad if there were that many people in the unit (similar in size to mine)?  One would think someone in there would have noticed the smell of somethng begining to burn before if got so out of hand like it did, unless they were all passed out, high, or something.  What got me is the people I saw leaving the apartment were all fully dressed ith coats on, three of them taking their bikes as I mentioned(the rest of us were wearing an assortment different night clothing). According to one fireman I talked with, whne they got up there, the unit was locked up and they couldn't get in.

Most of us who live here are older retired people (a few of which require mobility devices like scooters and wheelchairs), however, these were all young college age looking folks who I would ay were in their early 20s (including the person living there). The building has rules regarding parties, smoking, and drugs, as well as established "quiet hours" after 22:00.  I am sure the manager is going ot have a few words with this person later today.

So a not so good Monday morning here as I am still not only in pain, but tired from a lack of sleep and a little more on edge. May head out later to get some waterproof covers for the two computers and displays just in case something like this happens again and the sprinklers are set off while I am away.  Also will need to remember to switch everything off at the surge protector whenever I leave so no power is going to either system.

....fortunately the cap from the bottle of Wodka I have doesn't shoot out and get lost.  Even the both Russian and Polish blood in me wouldn't be enough to handle handle polishing the whole bottle off in one sitting.

Though it might mitigate the pain I've been going through.

Katia moved across lower-mid Mexico last week.  Lee is more east in the ocean, currently not expected to be a bother to anyone.

Could use a back brace but apparently my medical coverage lapsed and I wasn't informed about it.  Too expensive to pay for one at full price.
