It would be installing a second copy. If the thumbnail is not grey you can ignore the downloadable icon, if it is grey something is wrong

That's what I was afraid of.  Between that and some other issues I'm having, it may be time to wipe out my library and start over again.  Jooooooooy.

Can you find you files in the Content Library pane, under Daz Studio Formats, without installing via Connect?

Yeah, finding stuff isn't one of the problems I'm having, everything (other than things I know I installed wrong manually) I expect to find is right where I expect it to be.  The main problem (other than apparently having 2 copies of everything on my drive) is that I have several character morph sets that don't work.  I apply them and they just keep the default genesis face.  It's happening with several different vendors, and even on the same vendor it's only affecting about half of their sets.  I've done some troubleshooting with one of the vendors over on Rendo and all we could determine is "yep, it's not supposed to do that."  I've been seriously thinking about wiping everything out and resetting it for a while anyway, I know my library is not organized right.  I kinda went hog wild when I first started using Studio, and I know some of the stuff I got from other places didn't get installed right.  So finding out I've been double installing stuff is just one more reason to bite the bullet and do it.

Asking if you can find them in the Content Library was just a way to make sure they had installed correctly. It dos sound as if there may be an issue, with some characters failing to load correctly, but I assume most content is loading without error and without needing files moved? It might help to post a screenshot of your Content Directory Manager settings - Edit>Preferences>Content tab, use the Content Directory Manager button and expand to show the current paths.

All my other content is loading correctly, it's just a few of the preset morph packs that are not applying the face correctly.  I expect that something somewhere is corrupted, but don't know what to look at to fix it (I've reinstalled the morph packs to try that and it didn't help).  Here is my Content Directory Manager

One of my gripes is the fact that you cannot modify files in connect. I modify texture maps all the blessed time and resave to my directory. Can't do that with Connect files. It won't let you. :(

What problems are you having?  For example, you wish to add freckles to a V8 texture. You load Victoria 8 via Connect, you load the texture. You go to the Surface Tab and select her torso. You click on the diffuse texture of a body part which which will show you the name and location of the texture  file. You copy down this information and go to that location in the computer. You copy (we never mess with original files) the textures in the folder and past them in a new folder of your choosing i.e "Mary's Textures".  You fire up Photoshop or what ever you using the edit the textures and add freckles. You return to your loaded V8 and replace the texture in the Surface Tab. You save a material preset in a new place "Mary's Freckles" and done.

Before i could save them in the same file. Now I have to make a separate one. It's easier for me for organizaion sake to use the same folder. That way I can switch more easily between the original and the modified one.

That was an intentional change because too many people were overwriting important files. Also, any additions would erased everytime there was an update.  It is still best practices to keep the files separately, and maybe, keep a favorites folder where you have added the appropriate metadat so you see all the textures at once?

I took the easy way out. When I installed studio I ignored the login request for connect and told it to never remind me again. I then went a step furter and blocked studio from having access to the internet. Of course everytime there is an update I have to redo that but it is worth the piece of mind knowing that connect will never rear its ugly head on my computer.

...same here. For updates and betas I just download to my notebook via the DIM then transfer the file to the DIM folder on the workstation.

Call me paranoid, but I don't like programs calling "home" without asking. I don't purchase encrypted proiducts so connect is not needed wanted or allowed on my computer.

I don't need the app to hand-hold me. If I screw something I up I can redownload it. Best practices are a matter of opinion and my opinion differs. This is just extra work that I don't need to waste time on as time is a precious commodity. In doing this for over 10 years with Poser and DAZ not ONCE have I overwritten a file I needed.  I DON'T NEED THE INTENTIONAL CHANGE. If it was made optional, then that I can back but not forced.

Unless DAZ add some more DAZ Connect Encrypted products soon, you will not even have the option to buy them. The last one was released 8 months ago, and by January there will be none left.

For now at least, the whole encrypted only issue has pretty much gone away. Naturally it can rear its ugly head again should a new batch of DAZ Connect only products appear, but we have not heard any rumours etc of that happening again. I did wonder if DAZ would release Genesis 8 as encrypted only, but since they did not, I am wondering if, for now at least, they have shelved the idea.

Shadohawk1 your paranoid (you said I could) and Studio doesn't call home without asking.  Come on RKane we have all overwriten a file no matter how careful we try to be, which why I prefer DIM and its zips since I can just extract the file instead of re-installing.  As for wanting to save edited file to the folder there can be many reasons a user would have but Connect wont let us.  Connect is a good intention but badly executed

Whether you choose to believe it or not, I have never over-written a DAZ/Poser file to my memory. I do not have perfect memory, certainly as no one does but it has NEVER been an issue. And it is the poor execution I have an issue with. In case I happen to over-write a file, I can redownload it easily enough, I am sure.

Why prohibit me from saving a file to my own computer and have it work with DAZ? It does not prevent me from opening a file, and saving a new one to that directory. It just prevents me from using DAZ to access the new file I created in that directory.  I can save hundreds of new files to that directory if I want, I just can't acess them thru DAZ in that directory.

  • The Connect folders are designed to hold just the product files. that way if there is an update the old files can be removed if needed, new files added, and updates placed over the old versions. Adding your own files, or modified versions of existing files, opens the door to all kinds of issues - whether or not you'd make a mess, it's fair to assume some users would and suppotr would then have to help them fix everything. This system keeps a clean distinction between vendor files 9installed by Connect) in the /Data/Cloud folder and user files in the regular content directories.

  • Sorry I'm totally confused here. I have never purchased any item that is only available through Connect. I don't want Connect. My understanding was that Connect won't be involved unless I buy a product that is handled by Connect. Am I wrong?!

Which is another reason why it sucks. I'd rather be able to download to my directory directly and modify as needed. No thanks, cloud. No thanks.

You don't have to use Connect at all unless you want to install one of the handful of products available only via Connect. You can use it if you want for other content.

  • Thanks for clarifying things. Some of the above posts appeared to insist DAZ Connect would force itself on us.

It's installed with DS, but using it is not mandatory at all.

Only if you want one of those "Connect only" items.

Hind sight is always 20/20 my friend. You can still restrict Studio by going in and blocking its access to the internet.

Any program that is connected to teh internet has the option to call home. I refuse to give any program that option without my consent, it is as simple as that. In my line of work blind trust is dangerous and gets people killed, it just seems to have carried over to my personal life as well.

Richard, does connect do this automatically or is this something that happens when you try to use it?

I'm not sure what you mean? Only items DS was told to install via Connect will be in the Data/Cloud folder.

How does Studio get the new information you talked about if a product is updated?

  • Connect won't see updates as available until DS is allowed to connect to the Daz servers.

So Studio DOES in fact call home.

I don't, its locked down but it is nice to finally hear from the source that Studio does in fact call home if logged in.
