I buy something new and install it through DIM. Then I search for it in my products. Can't find it. I get aggravated. I find later that I appartently have to double click to install it AGAIN! even though I installed it through DIM.
Can I make DIM download things directly to my directly.... you know.... the GOOD OLD-FASHIOONED WAY THAT WORKED!
DAZ? Why did you add this feature that cause4s nothing but consternation and regret about buying something from ypour shop?
I hate it. HATE IT!

...If I read this corect, Connect is somehow fouling up the DIM process?
Instead of downloading it to my products menu, where I can find it easily, it tells me that I have to install it again. I can go hunt it down, If I want to but that makes it more time consuming than if it had JUST downloaded it to my Products menu, already.
Hi, RKane,
please humour me for asking a silly question, but you DO have the corrrect directory for DAZ&Poser in the Content Directory Manager set for where DIM installs the stuff?
I'm installing exclusively through DIM, and I don't have that problem with connect.
EDIT: You can always circumvent Connect, by the way. When it asks you to log in, select "Work offline" and "don't ask me again". Then it won't as you to log into Connect, though the question might pop up again at some point.
Why don't you ignore the DIM and do your downloads "the GOOD OLD-FASHIOONED WAY THAT WORKED" by selecting manual download in the shop. My DS is connected to DAZ3d.com, but that's pretty much it. No DIM, no smart content and everything is fine "the GOOD OLD-FASHIOONED WAY THAT WORKED".
DIM works just fine as long as everything is setup correct, but are you actually having problem downloading standard DIM content or Connect content, in the topic you say Connect ?
It does sound as if either your content directories are not set correctly or, more likely, there is a breakdown in communications between DIM, DS and the PostgreSQL database. Obviously DS is getting the list of content owned from the database or it wouldn't be able to try downloading, so the obvious suspect is DIM - are you closing DS and launching DIM, which can lead to the database not being available if the timing goes wrong? Have you run DS or DIM as admin, which can cause permission problems? What security software are you using?
Get out of Smart Content and in to Content Library. If your content is available under Studio Formats and/or Poser Formats it is installed properly and the problem is with CMS (which is unlikely if Connect is working), if the content doesn't showor work from the Content Library pane thanit is installed or mapped improperly.
I thought I was the only one this was happening to and if I go connect it still appears in dim too so double install plus connect is installing on c drive now which I wanted to avoid since not that big using the beta version of daz as the other full version missing files all time been putting up with it not wanting to do full reinstall as several 100 gb and is way more than what I can download a month and last time tried fixing data it uninstalled ton of stuff
oh and yes I have got a lot of connect only content
Open Content Directory Manager and change the Connect path.
I'm surprised at this, as the current quantity of connect only stuff is tiny (less than 10 items I think).
I cant speak for Daz Connect, but I can tell you the Daz Install Manager with into a custom root directory (like E:\Daz) or something, is great! And I am someone that really doesnt like learning new things.
...one more reason why I still have not adopted 4.9.4.Don't have this issue with the 4.9.3.166 Beta.
This is not a problem with Connect it is a problem of people not setting DIM and Studio up properly when they decide to use custom libraries instead of the defaults.
i've also noticed that even if DIM install content directories are set up correctly, launching DIM when the targeted external hard drive is not available results in DIM bouncing back to the default install path...without any kind of alert, or changing the displayed custom install path in settings.
it's easy enough to see if that's the problem. launch DIM, log in, click the settings gear, and go to the installation section. then click on the ... beside your install path and see where it actually takes you. reset the path and accept if necessary.
I think that the problem is that people like the convienence of Smart content but don't want to get involved with Connect. You can not get Smart Content to work without connect. (I could be wrong, but I have not had any success doing this without connect to download data for smart content) I use DIM myself and just let Connect download data for smart content. If Connect wants me to install content via connect. I JUST DON'T. Masterstroke is correct if you set up things correctly you can download the zip file and install manually and find the file yourself in content tab but it won't have smart content available. You just need to organize your content and you can find everything you have. Plan ahead and write down where the parts you want are. You can use search function on 3D site you purchase stuff on to see if you have the things you need for your projects and then you can write down the path in your runtime to save you time hunting it down. It also helps to save generic scenes, lights and cameras before as sets and then add the characters you decide on. You know Paper and Pencil work wonders. Sometimes going old school get things done because you can pun in notes about settings and other things that can get lost if you just save inside Studio.
You do not need to use connect in order to use Smart Content, all the files needed for Smart Content are packaged in runtime/support inside the installation zip. Even people that install their content manually can still use Smart Content, however they would need to use Database Maintenance to launch the process that processes the files to set up the Smart Content.
Connect is not needed for this at all. However, having said that, some Smart Content is updated later, and these updates may not be immediately put in the installation zips. In this case you need to log in to connect in order to get the very latest Smart Content updates that have not yet been propagated to the zip files. This allows people that install the bulk of their content using DIM, or manually, to ensure they have the very latest updates of smart content.
...I have all my content on a second drive with custom setups and never had an issue with the DIM installing things where I want them to go.
I also don't bother with Smart Content (hence the custom setup) as the pane takes up too much dispaly real estate for my tastes.
This isn't a DIM problem, it's a user problem.
Edit: I should probably add that DIM saves a person a lot of time. If you only buy one item every few months, no big deal, but a big time saver on larger purchases. It's extremely easy to use, you just need to set your path properly. I would suggest that people who can't get the right path set in DIM are equally unlikely to get the resources downloaded and unzipped to the right locations.
As of a few years ago DIM automatically places the metadata in the database. The question of how current the metadata is still applies tho.
Because I have over 4000 items in content. Sorry. DIM is too convenient. I just don't want the connect aspect of it.
For some reason, that day, it told me that contect, although installed by DIM, had to be installed with an extra step by double clicking on the item.
Why?
Certain security software has a 'thing' against Postgre...and can cause problems with it.
I think we are on the right track. I am not certain I shut DAZ down properly before opening DIM. I will check that. I am using Bit Defender but I did let it know that Dim and Daz are "safe" already. i will check on those settings when I get home.
I have a related question about connect/DIM. I install everything through DIM, but then connect gives me the fancy little "INSTALL ME INSTALL ME INSTALL ME NOW!!!!!" arrow icon thingy on the icons in SMart Content. So far I've been installing everything it does that with. Is this installing a second copy of everything to my hard drive, or is it just database maintenance? I've also got quite a few products that say they have updates, but won't actually install the update. They say they're starting, the icon grays out like it's in process, but it just sits there and never finishes.
It would be installing a second copy. If the thumbnail is not grey you can ignore the downloadable icon, if it is grey something is wrong
That's what I was afraid of. Between that and some other issues I'm having, it may be time to wipe out my library and start over again. Jooooooooy.
It generally makes sense to either install everything using connect (except for a few things that can not be, eg Daz Studio itself) or nothing. Mixing installation of normal content using Connect and DIM is likely to result in double installs.
Can you find you files in the Content Library pane, under Daz Studio Formats, without installing via Connect?
