Morning. All quiet here after all the howling wind - those pesky lil isobars on the weather maps must be getting unsquished because only a faint breeze stirring treetops and a little debris in our streets remain between our stained and scarred but unbent steel and concrete towers :)

But you have better weather on the way...something to look forward to.  It's all downhill for us pretty soon.  Although it was really nice today.  Mid 80s F.

...walking home tonight, looked up to  notice that the moon was still "orange" even high in the sky and the smoke from the fires so thick it is diffusing the moon's details.  The haze is so thick tonight, cannot even see any stars let alone meteors from the Perseid Meteor Shower.

Been having trouble breathing the last several days.

Yeah, really been a bad couple weeks here with yet one more day of 90 or higher temps tomorrow before this heat wave finally breaks. May even see some water from the sky on Sunday.

We are so not used to this here.

Other than rain for a couple of days, the weather's been wonderful here.  My air-conditioner hasn't had to come on in a couple weeks.  It sniffs the air about once every 10 minutes and thinks it's OK and goes back to sleep.

It's the height of fruit season here (Western NY State).  Local fruit stands are chock full.    I've eaten myself sick with red and yellow watermelon, corn, raspberries, blueberries.  I've stocked up on Jalapeno peppers (I freeze them for use in the winter).  The corn is sort of past its prime but still tollerably un-tough for another week or so.

Complaint: I have a house full of fruit flies. angry

Well, maybe only three or four but they think my head is a fruit, and with my ancient eyes and slow reflexes they sucessfully elude my attempts to mash them between my palms.  This has been going on for a couple of weeks.  How long would I have to divest myself of bannanas before they die of old age?

Non-complaint:  I sometimes sort my music collection by "Last Accessed" time and dig deep into it.  Today I dug up a lesser known piano concerto I hadn't heard in a long time, by Ferdinand Ries who was not only a contemporary of Beethoven but also, a friend, pupil, and assistant.   His Piano Concerto in D ("Pastoral") is elegantly haunting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vor63YvAh0w The 1st movement theme appears first @ 0:57 and several times after that but is stated quite clearly @ 10:30 .

    2nd movement @ 13:20

    3rd movement @ 18:55

Very interesting article about Ries here:  http://www.classicfm.com/composers/beethoven/guides/ferdinand-ries-1784-1838-beethovens-right-hand-man/

I wonder about all those kids driving around with those overpowered subwoofers that make it sound like the car is about to vibrate apart at the seams like in the end of the Blues Brothers. Some of the amps they use put out way more wattage than the transmitter we had at the community radio station where I worked.

Vehicles today are pretty well soundproofed and it makes me wonder about the driver's hearing when a car pulls up at a stoplight (with all the windows up) and I can not only hear every note but every lyric while standing at the corner waiting.

I worked for a very short time as a car salesman for a big dealership.
(The money wasn't good enough to give up liking the man in the mirror)
If someone showed up for warranty work with a ground pounder sound
system in their car, there was a good chance that the warrenty on the
    car would be voided.

1/2 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup water, a few drops of liquid soap.
In a small jar in your kitchen.
The vinegar attracts the flies, the soap destroys the surface tension,
the fruit flies land on the surface and drown.

....wow must have been really tired slept in until almost 11:00 this morning, that's nearly 12 hours.

Woke up to cloudy rather cool conditions for a change looks like back to the normal morning clouds and afternoon sun we usually have this time of year.

Have a friend with a pickup truck lined up to help me move my desks & such on Monday  Will be packing up the rest of what I have here tonight (mostly kitchen stuff and the main workstation) to get it moved over tomorrow.

Forum spell check on the fritz again. Seems like trying to start up an old Briggs and Stratton lawnmower, keep pulling the lanyard but just a few sputters and nothng happens.

A good nights sleep is something I rarely enjoy.  frown

But did have a good day today.  A mini-adventure. smiley  I drove 20 miles to the local outdoor flea-market at the top of the lake, and found a new, cheap, small pillow for my back while driving long distances.  Also found another small cheap Red Rose Tea ceramic figurine (a raccoon) for my collection.  Spent a total of 3 dollars (plus gas), but on the way back I cut across the lake on the ferry instead of the bridge.  The ferry cuts across the half-mile wide middle of the narrow 17 mile long lake.  It's a tradition around here.  I do it at least once a year instead of taking the Interstate bridge that crosses just a few hundred yards south of the ferry.  The ferry crossing used to cost a nickel for pedestrians and not much more for cars.  It can carry 9 cars and as many passengers as will fit in the left over space.  But nowdays they only ask for donation, and rarely runs full.  Must be partially financed by some government agency.  Similar to the old "Midway" amusement park just a couple miles north on the east side of the lake that is now a State Park with ageing amusement rides.

On this trip there were only two cars and a half dozen Amish men.  Rare to see them somewhere other than driving a buggy, tilling a field with horse and plow, or building a roof.

Also, watch this 1936 newsreel clip featuring this same ferry (an older version of it). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huQPeln-MKk  Ferry has been around since 1811

See image of my ferry trip below, complete with a bevy of Amish tourists.  Picture taken with my car's dashcam.  I've probably condemned them to Hell by taking their photo.  (But I was respectful enough to not show their faces.)

    ..cool.

Reminds me of the old Merrimac Cable ferry in Wisconsin. I remember on a field trip to Devils Lake State Park we rode the ferry.
