Return on Investment? I won't tell you how to spend your money.

Screen recording with Quicktime Pro $30 from the apple store. Save it as a movie file. Edit with iMovie already on your mac or available with iLife from the apple store. Screen captures available with the middle button using a Logitech mouse. Or Command + Shift + 3 or Command + Shift + 4 for capturing full screen or just a window. Saves as png on your desktop. Import into your movie editor, iMovie for instance. Add your voice over narration giving us your instructions. Make sure the audio doesn't go into the red ... guess about level 6 is good. Your mic is fine for this. Intercut your video footage of you talking as you have been doing in your other clips. Your current camera is fine for this. Your lighting is mostly good. Render your edited movie and export to Youtube as you have been doing.

You are now a big time movie producer and I can say I knew her when she....

I believe Charlene was shopping for equipment for producing a live webinar, not recorded videos. She seems to have the recorded stuff all figured out.

My eyes tend to look at her while she is talking in the lower left corner instead of what she is moving the mouse on in the upper right corner. I also find the audio vary from clip to clip. Okay so have to adjust the audio and start again to hear what she had to say. Also play the video a second time to see what she was moving. It's no biggie for me. Yeah, I made a big faux pas about her buying thousands of dollars of equipment to broadcast live. It won't be my last time making mistakes. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be over in the corner there committing hari kari to save face.

Hey Charlene! As a fellow Photoshop post-work enthusiast, might I suggest using a Black and White adjustment layer to fine tune the tonality in your images rather than just desaturating them with a Hue/Sat layer? Adjusting each of the individual color channels gives you a lot more control. And you can go one step further by adding a Selective Color adjustment layer *beneath* the B&W layer and using that to further fine-tune the tonality created by the B&W layer.

My "do" for today was catching up on all your videos, having only watched a couple so far. I think I've caught up, in betwixt interruptions from child unit, puppies, spousal unit and assorted tasks. (And ADD ftw.)

Thank you so much for all your work and the inspiration of explaining why you are doing all this. Incredibly moving! You've inspired me to work harder at making time for what I want to be doing. I broke out the headphones and did stuff while the fam watched TV. Two baby steps forward. Thank you for sharing your dream!

    Loving these tips!.

I would really like, (and I've seen a lot of people asking for) tips on using photoshop brushes ( especially Ron's )

I would like to be able to use ron's brushes in GIMP a free version of Photoshop.

Heck I would like to learn how to use GIMP giggles

I have for 12 years used Paint Shop Pro9 and with my new laptop (I just got the other day) it has no disk part so I can not put it in here so had to go with GIMP as I Do not have the funds to buy Photoshop.

Place Ron's Brushes into the Plug-ins folder of GIMP. That is all there is to it and they work nicely. When it comes time to changes brushes, select the folder they are in from the menu.

I am mistaken. It's not the plug-ins folder for GIMP but the BRUSHES folder! Thank you knittingmommy for correcting that :)

There is a brush-managment plugin for GIMP that lets you dynamically move brushes in and out of the correct folder.  Despite not really being that good with this sort of stuff I have a shed-load of brushes and GIMP ended up choking on them.  Using the plugin means that, with a little effort, I can select the brushes I wnat at teh timeand have them available, and have GIMP start!!!

Please share.  I haven't found a good brush manager for Gimp, yet.  A plugin that does it would be awesome.

I have to re-find it myself now (setting up a new computer) - I'll see what I can dredge up!

Not too many, though, or Gimp has the same problem as Photoshop and has issues loading.

Actually this is a Gimp problem, not Photoshop. I have hundreds of brushes loaded in Photoshop (CS 5.5) along with multiple addons like Filter Forge and Nik and it loads just fine. With it running off of an SSD (Samsung m.2) Photoshop loads almost instantly. Almost as fast as notepad or calc. Note: it loaded fine on a platter drive also but it did take a couple minutes to load.

Oh, I must have misunderstood.  Not using PS myself, I had read that some PS users had the same problem.  To be honest, though, that was a long time ago and I don't know which version of PS they were using.  I'll take your word for it since you actually use the program and I don't.  I love those NIK in Gimp and it doesn't cause a problem since it isn't used as a plug-in and not actually part of the Gimp load up.  I'm still working out how to get Filter Forge to do the same thing.  I haven't been able to script that to work in Gimp like NIK yet.

    Greetings,

I'm a bit behind on videos, but one of the early questions seemed to be if it would be interesting to watch as you modeled something from scratch, despite it taking hours.

I actually pay for something like that.  I'm a Patreon subscriber to Sakimi Chan, and some of her 'video process' recordings run 3-4 hours, and there's no voice over, just (copyright-free) music over it, recording everything she's doing while she's working in Photoshop.  She releases around a dozen of them per month.  You get to see nearly every brush stroke, every layer created, every deformation applied, etc...  It's kind of 'zen' to watch.  There's nothing like watching a professional do their work in real-time to teach you new things about how to use tools you thought you already knew.  Even without voice-over, it's really pretty amazing.

Now, it's worth noting that Sakimi Chan makes her entire living (as far as I know) off Patreon and so has a TON more time to do that than you probably do, and the videos are only 3-4 hours, not 6-8, and she's been doing it for at least a year, so probably has a 'process' down.  But in the abstract, video processes for professionals doing their work is definitely something that a segment of people are interested in.

Ok, the one I have/had has been superceded by something called GURM (which manges more than just brushes, usign the same swap in/out principle).  Setup is very similar to what Irecall of the otrignal mange I had and is reasonably simple.  The version I get is called 0.7 and looks liek there's a v0.8 (which I think the 0.7 zip file actually has)

Get the zip, and all you need is the .py and .ini files. I think you can place them anywhere, but I put them in my C:\Users\Simon\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins folder. The readme in the zip does explain, but to make things a bit clearer:

Open the gurm.py file with any text editor.  On line 3 there is a GURMINI= statement.  In the quotes to the right of the = sign you need to place the locatin (and name) of the gurrm.ini file.  That's all for that file.  The ini file is made of of a handful of 'stanzas', all similar and if you are only going to have it manage your brushes start by changing each of the useManager = yes lines to read = no (apart from the top one, which is for brushes).  For the top, brushes, stanza change the gimpPath = line to reflect the location of where GIMP will pick up it's brushes from (I used the default GIMP location of C:\Users\Simon\.gimp-2.8\brushes. The userPath is where you will organise your brushes, and from wheer GURM will copy them out of so that GIMP can find them.  Each sub-folder on that folder will be a 'category'

Start GIMP and if you placed the files in any place other than the gimp plug-ins folder you'll need to tell GIMP wehere it is. When workign you will find GURM under the Filters menu,, and it dos, thjsnkfully, issue error messages if it can't find things.

I have no issues with having hundreds of brushes loaded as well for photoshop as well the addons mentioned.  And my machine is not anything terribly special either.  Its interesting because I have heard that said a lot, like not just once or twice but often and couldn't figure out why I didn't have those issues lol.  Good to know I'm not crazy!

She might be under deadlines, on vacation or preparing for company since it's so close to the holiday. Could be a bunch of different reasons ;)

In one of the last videos or a post, Charlene said she had to go out of town.  She was hoping to upload some videos she had ready while she was gone.  I'm assuming she may have run into some technical difficulties doing that or she just got too busy while out of town.  I'm sure she'll be back soon.

I'm grateful for the wisdom and inspiration she is sharing, and am patiently awaiting her new posts. I'm believing when her holidays, travels, and deadlines allow, she'll post again. Unfortunately, I doubt there is anything we can do that will cause her to have more hours in her day.

Well I will be keeping her in my thoughts and sending "good vibes" to many folks on a daily basis! I really want 2017 to be a "much better year" than 2016 was for me and many others!

I have to give a big thanks to Charlene.  I had been thinking for a while to put together a website and a youtube channel,   and when she explain the need to get out of the comfort zone and explore new possibilities,  and asked "what are you doing?"  those words resonated. So I've got a new youtube channel,  and its all in a small part thanks to Bluebird3D. Big thanks!   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1aKmnPJhAO6LS6kGM5MotQ

She is still releasing new products in the store. In December, she said there would be more coming to this channel, but we haven't heard a peep about it since then. I'm not sure what happened to her "Daily Do" commitment. Perhaps she is still pursuing that privately. I'm sure she needs to focus on producing a living and personal life first, like everyone. Here's hoping we see her here again soon.
