Is N.G.S. Anagenessis 2 the best skin shader you've found no reason to use the other ones?

Right now with the purchase of any new release the bundle for Generation 4 and Genesis is on sale for only $7 and the one for Genesis 2 is on sale for $9

Ah, I haven't noticed because this Thanksgiving sale hasn't really grabbed me, and since I own all the Smart Converters, they don't show up for me either. That is a good price, but only 5 or 6 items to choose from for the special discount is very limiting. Still, $16 for 2 Iray Smart Converter products is a almost a steal for what they do if there is a qualifying item you want. Maybe tomorrow will have a good selection. And with this sale, the 3rd would be $9 as well, that's $25 for ALL the Iray Smart Converters if bought with a qualifying item, a savings of $55. WOW.

And yeah, kyoto, I have my own dream machine dreams as well. I've been thinking lately how I don't really need two kidneys.

No not just "5 or 6 items chose from". Any new release (i.e. has green new tag) works, even the inexpensive PC+ items.

However, unfortunately the one for Genesis 3 isn't in the sale. So just the Generation4 & Genesis bundle and the Genesis 2 ones are a bargain at the moment.

I have always done my own skin shaders, but when I saw the promos and the results people were getting with Anagenesis II, I was really interested and wondered how the shaders were set up. I got it mainly so I could see how DZ was setting things up. For me, it is an outstanding product, and the only Iray skin shader product I have purchased. When you see some of the things PA's have done in their shader set ups, it's no wonder there isn't a one click solution, especially with 3Delight conversions.

I takes me maybe 2-10 min. to make any adjustments that might be needed, but I almost always adjust shaders to my own liking anyway, so it's no big deal. IMHO learning to adjust shaders is a skill that everyone should have, it makes you much less dependent on the work of someone else, and greater freedom to make the image just like you want. But that's just me, your mileage may vary.

I guess for me, I just don't see the amazing results one gets with this shader. I look at the renders that people use this product on, and I'm just not seeing it.

If I didn't get a substantial discount on other products for purchasing it, I would return it. I found it a hassle to use, and dislike the bleaching qualities... I like skin shaders, but at the same time I would like to preserve alterations to the skin made by the PA who designed  the character. I don't really want to wipe those out of the skin settings...I like them. Nor do I want to spend too much time restoring those settings.

At any rate, it is great that there is a product others love so well, that many feel improves their work.

Sadly, it does nothing for me.

...I would need PC item to make that work for my budget and now that the PC+ sale is over I don't think those would qualify anymore.  I could end up spending just as much or more overall buying other qualifying content than just paying the full price for the single item. 13$ - 15$ to get a 40% discount kind of isn't like getting a 40% discount as I'm still shelling out around 30$.  That's why I'm not very thrilled by these types of sales.

...yeah I thought about that, but at my age, I need to hang on to all the "components".

...this is why I am looking forward to the new Skin Builder.  The I found the G2 vversion to be so useful, even created a very nice Albino skin.  I found Beautiful Skin for G3F to also be a nice resoruce.  Granted they are presets but if you make slight adjustments to the gamma in the  image editor you can  really expand the range.  I also like that it preserves the slightly lighter palm and sole shading that the G3 maps have.

..here's the albino skin I created with Skin Builder Pro for G2 (also made sure the brows, eye colour, and eyelashes matched)  The squint is on intentional as albinos are more sensitive to light, some are even blind.

Can't wait to try this with G3F as I also have the Brow Remover and Real Brows tools.

Personally I felt Skin Builder Pro was a waste of money, its only for females, and it takes an age up to 10 minutes to load a character using it, I never use it because of that.

N.G.A. on the other hand I find fast and can be used on different generations and both sexes and its quick, Skin builder presumably will require adding shaders and then tweaking them to get them to look how you want - to be honest I don't really feel that theres a comparison the two are quite different products.

We solved that problem with the new version for Genesis 3. The skin base takes around 1 minute to generate, and will load just as quick as any other skin set because the new system saves all results as flattened jpg's in a folder of your choice and creates a material preset so you can load it from where ever it was saved (More on that when the feature is finalized and mentioned in the product thread). Unfortunately the previous version relied heavily on temp lie files, this is no longer the case. We basically rebuilt this version from scratch. One thing I myself was never happy with was the loading times of the original version, but at the time was the best we could do. Now we know a few more script tricks so this one is a way faster. It also has a dynamic feature that allows you to either generate the skins and shaders for either Iray or 3DL.

Thats good to hear, will it be able to tweak the shaders from Skin builder or will the shaders still need setting up in the surfaces tab.

And will it be availble for both G3F and G3M?

You can tweak the shaders if you want, then when done, open the script again and save everything out. When we show the products features you will see how easy it is to do this. The shaders we built took some time for good looking results, but can easily be edited like any other skin shader. There will not be a male version as of now. This version already took over 3 months to build, and isn't even completed yet. I am taking a huge financial gamble on this products long development cycle lol. I have been living off back catalog sales (thankfully they have been getting me by). So, doing it again for a male version and doing all the texture files associated will take some time. I have other products that need to go out that I never get to release because I'm having to do a next Generation version of something I already created. I mentioned before that this product is probably the most stressful product we have ever developed. There is so much back and forth and testing all conflicts that it drives you insane lol. So a male version is not something I really want to do right now unfortunately.

    Re: skin builder for G2:

What I do is build a skin, then go into the temp files, copy over the important 3 bits (face/torso/limbs specular) to a folder, check where the images are saved (which have bump/normals), and then just use those.

Or I check where everything is stored and simply use the original diffuse maps and layer them myself.

Also 'only for women' isn't ... meaningful, given you can use Victoria stuff on males anyway.

There is a manual shader include where you could sellect the appropriate surfaces, apply them one by one. sellect all, apply the manual shader; I probably could apply them to a m4 or v4 in two minutes tops.  This also works with geografts, animals etc...

Thank you. I don't see an manual version of the shader, just Genesis, Genesis 2 & Genesis 3. I also reviewed the installed files and do not see one. From the user guide I got this but it doesn't mention instructional steps, unless I just misreading it.
N.G.S. 2 is designed to work with any diffuse map for any user, but:
    1. You can use any normal or displacement map.
    2. You can use any Map you want in any N.G.S. 2 value.
    3. You can use any map on Top Coat Bump (Any Map!!)    Top Coat Bump is like a Top Coat Varnish Layer.    Don’t be afraid to experiment with this Magic Layer!    Note:    For Pores Scaling, you can put micros as a LIE above the map,    with Subtractive blend mode at 10-15% Opacity.
    4. You can use any LIE Image (and veins too)
    5. Don’t be afraid to use N.G.S. 2 in any prop!    (hair, fruits, velvet clothes etc.)    The only map you will need, is one diffuse.
For any question, don’t be afraid to ask! You know how to find me!

After reading this I still have the question of which preset to apply, Genesis 1, 2 or 3. Any insight on that users?

    PS

OK,after having another look, by manual shader are you referring to the files inside of the folders labelled Brightness, Dark Skins, Glossiness & Pores? I do have those. I think I was expecting a Manual preset which makes no sense if it doesn't know what material set it's working on. Sorry for the one track mind. I think I see how this works now. Thanks for the info.

You're not alone! And that's what I hate about DAZ products. There are no such rules that PA must provide us a descent manual, as if DAZ people assume that we all know everything. I've tried to beg for empathy but fail. They never listen to us. They are too busy. And writing something like this may actually be deleted. Just be on your own. You ask here and sometimes you'll get answer, several times not cuz everyone is on his own, too. (at least I feel that most of people here in this forum are more generous than PAs who never have enough time to answer anything.)

Whoa thats really a very unfair statement the PA's here are some of the most helpful and curtious you can get, they answer questions and help as much as they can. The PA for the N.G.A product has a thread were they have answered questions and addressed any problems people are having.

I should show easy job to support my thread. The first pic is NGS2. It contain more natural texture, specular color, and depth of shadow. Unlike the second pic which is boring original. I don't have to tweak anything. NGS2 does very good work for me requiring just one click.

Images deleted - please see http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/3279/acceptable-ways-of-handling-nudity#latest

Well it's shouldn't be a big deal to make one for the Males when the one for the Females is working correctly. Maybe they will extend the Female version to work with Males or maybe it will be a different product?

However if they don't, you can buy Slosh UV Swapper for Genesis 3 Female & Genesis 3 Male and your problem is solved. Except maybe the Skin Builder Pro for G3F will only have things like adding blush, lipstick, and such things and not tatoos and beard stubble and buzz cut stubble and such things,

Here is a comparison I posted in the Anagenesis II thread over in the Commercial Products forum. This was my first quick test with a character I was developing for Genesis 2 a while back. The first image is the Anagenesis II render, the second is my original Iray shader set up (the skin is a merchant resource skin from Rendo for V4 that I converted to G2F). As you can see, Anagenesis II brings out a lot more detail and life to the skin. It's interesting that some of the things that Dimension-Z did with the shader setup are what people in some of the Iray skin discussions have said not to do (which I always doubted, because that is exactly what I would do in Octane).

Anaother quick comparison using Amaya for G3F. Both are the default shaders - no tweaking. It would take about 30 seconds (if that) to make the Anagenesis II version darker similar to the default shaders. I kinda like the lighter version, but both are good. In this case,However on some skins the differences are rather dramatic, with Anagenesis II making a more "realistic" skin on well made and/or detailed base texture maps. Due to the variability in quality and uniformity of the base skin texture maps, the results with Anagenesis II can vary a great deal.

Sorry to hear there will be no Male version but do understand.

Will I'm quite aware that you can use Skin Builder on males its the first thing I did when I purchased it when it came out but the options are designed for females I would have liked an option that had more masculine choices.

In the absence of a male version, this seems like a decent alternative solution. If it would indeed be 3 months work for a G3M version, I would not blame the PA's for passing on that. There are various fibre mesh products out there to add some face/body hair to make the skin more masculine, or alternatively someone could offer an add on product with hair overlays.

I do pity poor Zev0, he will have just finished updating all his products to Genesis 3 by the time Genesis 4 rolls out, and it will be time to start over again!

You just hit that nail on the head!

...as I mentioned, hanging on to the remainder fo a GC in wait for this.  A big saver for myself as I don't have to purchase new skins or figure out how to make old ones work without seams showing.

Also 'only for women' isn't ... meaningful, given you can use Victoria stuff on males anyway.

...you can also save as a materials preset. Did that with my KK albino character and can apply it to any other G2F figure/character (just ran a test with Belle 6, KK is built off a combination of Mei Lin, Steph 6 and Zahara base body shapes with Emmawyn, Mei LIn  Sumiko and a bit of Girl 6 base head shapes).

Yeah the load time is a bit longer, but that is little consequence for having the flexibility to create any skin type.

Well, my big reason for doing the above is that, if I remember right, skin builder tends to make a unique diffuse map per surface, which is a little excessive.
