Good looking content... just too pristine, neat, clean, perfect,.which comes across cartoonish. The PA needs to get closer to real world, reviewing Stonemason http://www.daz3d.com/stonemason or http://www.daz3d.com/jack-tomalin content items might help.Maybe the content items would work, if your project was the "Truman Show".
All that work and all they need is some textures that convey a more real world appearance.Sorry, I am not inclined to kit bash, especially for content I buy like this. It would take too much time, and saving time is my purpose for buying content.

Plenty of texture packs to help you out
Huh? I don't see anything about textures that will do what I mentioned. I export most content I buy, so shaders won't help.
Also, since these are large sets the PA should discuss system requirements. Monster sets usually have monster memory requirements.
I didn't post this to rag on the Artist. I think it is very well done. There are just things that should be done. Quality architectural type renderings don't fit well for many of us.
Not everybody is necessarily trying to do extreme realism, in which case the person trying to do a "toon" type environment would have to go through just as much work to acheive the look they want as you are saying you'd have to do to get the look you want.
Not every product is meant for everyone. If realism is what you want there are plenty of vendors, two of which you suggested, that do excellent work and have a lot of content in the store. SM has his Urban sets which are huge and work quite well for almost any realistic city scene you could want. Suggesting a PA "needs to get closer to the real world" is just this side of being rude since that style they have might be exactly what they were trying to acheive.
Also, these sets are for Poser, not Daz.
I'll point out that, in Daz at least, there are a bunch of easy ways to make things look dirty. So there's that.
Yep, quite simple actually. Select everything and apply the grime-inizer. :)
I'm not knocking the content. I'm just saying my thoughts. I am certain there are people with projects that can use the content. I only buy high quality content like Daz3d offers, because of the type work I do. There are plenty of architectural type render contents on 3dwarehouse, which I rarely use. Texturing is art...IMO.
Are you serious? I suspect you will need a crack-inizer, a busted brick-inizer and a hole-inizer as well.

Shaders won't do the export thing...textures will
I think it's more that you aren't seeing any atmospheric effects or realistic lighting in the Dreamland models. Do that and you take care of most of your complaint, if you have a computer cabaple of that is a reasonable amount of time or at all.
Grimizer looks totally unrealistic for any use based on that ad copy, plus there seems to be an out of focus grime layer combined with a focused grime layer over the out of focus grime layer.
You'd have to do a bit of work but manually editing the textures and adding layers you want to make dirty with LIE is probably a better solution. Like applying makeup to characters.
It's nice to get a variety and different styles. I'm sure that vendor is laughing all the way to the bank, since their models sell quite well. I'm personally tired of grime and grafitti, the downtowns I've been to also had quite nice areas with older buildings, alleys, and they didn't have grafitti, trash cans, broken windows, or an abundance of litter. And people render in different styles, and with different lighting, can get very different results. Thank goodness for variety.
they load quite easily in iClone if thats what you are asking, I have used the higher poly sets yet to be released here I bought at Renderosity in iC5 and 6 quite often.
is block 18 yet to come here, a recent video
and an old one fro 2013
I had the textures lower rez admittedly but on my old i5 mobo with 8 GB RAM and GTX 760 card had to just to have that many trees in iC5!!!!
now with an i7 16GB and a 980ti its a walk in the park.
I personally love the clean look of it. Gives it an air of nostalgia and whimsy, which I think is part of the artist's style.
I thought I had it bad because someone said something mean about ONE of my products in a thread not long ago. But an entire thread for the purpose of putting down someone's whole store by comparing them to Stonemason and Jack Tomalin, probably the top two artists in our market? WOW. All my sympathy is for Dreamland Models today, I tell you what.
Dreamland models rock - a remarkable value for the price and I'm excited about the upcoming Iray versions.
If you don't like the style, don't buy it.
By all means, criticise (Just keep any criticism polite.) if you see a poor quality product, but when the style is different than your requirements... look for something else.
there seems to be a trend lately to criticise stuff for lack of opening doors, separate props now clean textures, seems the desire to just plonk and render has overtaken kitbashing and tweaking stuff to suit your needs.
As a person who started off my 3D hobby with iClone 3 and sketchup models with 3Dxchange2 I soon learnt to modify and adapt stuff because there is a lot of seriously lowpoly crap on the 3D warehouse albeit free, discovering DAZ Poser content after seeing prices of other stuff on sites like Turbosquid and the lowpoly gaming stuff was a godsend!!
If you have ever loaded a Unity, Arteria3D or Unreal model in a 3D rendering app you'd know what I mean.
If Len wants to criticise he need look no further than some of the stuff on the Reallusion Marketplace (not the content store) made by other users hoping to get a quick buck, hell I even have a store with only a couple simple freebies I admit.
You may not be knocking the content, but the way you are wording your thoughts comes across as you are and comparing to others work like you did conveys the same knocking message.
Also with DAZ's return policy, there really is no need to list system requirements.
For me, they're a bit pricey for sets I'd have to do a full conversion of to make them work for IRay, but I love the look of them and when(if) Dreamland puts out the Daz format ones, I'll be shopping.
I agree with you Barefoot - Tom's Dreamland models are beautiful in their own way, and the renders I've seen done in Poser look realistic. Like you and others have mentioned I too think they have a great nostalgic feel that takes me back to a childhood in suburban neighborhoods of Ohio that look alot like these. I've purchased several of his sets even though I don't have Poser, just in the hopes that I would eventually learn how to use them in Daz Studio.
The original poster is certainly entitled to his own opinion. If he is looking for dirty streets with lots of graffitti, there are already several of those available. Just don't ask Tom to change his style away from what he creates now, there are many of us who appreciate these city views just as they are. -Cathy
His work is amazing. Here is Block 20 that I bought from the other site ages ago. This was rendered in Iray. I didn't do any tweeking to the buildings. However, in most of his stuff, if you do close-up renders there is some dirt/grime running from windows or down/up building walls, faded business signs and stuff. His sets are very versatile.
Yeow... I made some simple statements that are my thoughts. I realize there are plenty of others who can use the content items. Some have no issues with kit bashing or applying new textures. I seriously looked at the content for purchase. The only reason I mentioned Stonemason or Tomalin was to establish a basis for what I was trying to communicate.
I would seriously consider to purchase their content, if they released an expansion pack with textures that aren't so clinical and perfect.
I think his stuff is right up there along with stonemason and jack's - of course his products are totally different in that he focuses mainly on neighborhood scenes whereas Jack's and Stone's have a great deal of variety of themes going on. I own a lot of Dreamland's products, having bought them from rendo. He has a lot of furniture and cars too at rendo.
I like Tom's sets...they give me a "Pleasantville" feeling :)
Laurie
gorgeous
Well you named two artists that you like so buy from them. What the point of complaining about an artist you don't like except to try and pressure them in an insulting way to do what you like rather than what they like. You haven't even made a valid complaint about the technical merit of the product. 'It's too good' is not a valid complaint. Something tells me you're not employing a winning strategy.
Next time you go to the dentist, doctor or a restaurant and so on, make sure that's it's clear it's know to them you prefer their facilities, themselves, or what they sell not to be clinically clean.
Nothing wrong with these sets. They are very well done, and OMG, not all the world is dirty and grafitti covered. There's things like garbage collection and security services. I bought two of the sets, and have the others wishlisted. If I need grime and grafitti on them, for bad neighbourhoods, I can easily modify and throw in junk props.
What happened to 'each to their own'?
If I don't like a set or a character or smth else, I simply don't buy it and shut up. There's more than enough which I want anyway,
A set can't please everyone, because then it becomes too large and too expensive and no one would buy it simply for that reason.
For anyone doing stuff like this in Daz Iray, the shader pack in my sig includes a few presets for grime/dirt/rust that work decently for a bunch of stuff. (And it's free)
