OT - PAs and Dazaholics, share your artist name origin story!

To help celebrate this year's PA sale, I thought it might be entertaining to learn how our favorite PAs (and anyone else who wants to play along) came up with their artist names.

A quick stroll through my runtime includes awesome products by PAs from almost every letter of the alphabet, but the most intriguing names include: DestinysGarden, DimensionTheory, DzFire, IgnisSerpentus, InaneGlory, Ironman13, Lady Littlefox, Lilflame, Lyoness, Mec4D, MortemVetus, Omnifreaker, Predatron, Sickleyield, Sloshwerks, Stonemason, TangoAlpha, The AntFarm, V3Digitimes, Zeddicuss, Zev0...

There's got to be an interesting "origin" story behind these and the many creative names I've encountered here in the forums. Share yours!

  • Well, since you asked, I've shared this story before. I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics. The Endless are Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. I've always like the name Destiny. I've met a few girls who happen to have been fortunate enough to be named Destiny by their parents, and I've been jealous of each and every one of them. To use some variation of Destiny for my forum name when I joined here made sense. In the comics, you get to Destiny's realm by entering a labyrinthe. I confess, at the time, I was not sure how to spell labyrinthe, so I needed something easier. From the story arc Brief Lives, chapter 7, page 7, Dream and Delirium are going to visit Destiny. "This is not Earth. This is not now. This is Destiny's garden, that is a place to itself, and exists in its own time." "The garden of Destiny. Look behind you: shadow-plays of memory are forever being enacted, on paths you walked too long ago."  My avatar is inspired by Death, who dresses very much like I did in college, down to the black hair and giant ankh necklace. So there you have it. Mystery solved.

  • I love that story, DG!

THAT is a cool origin story! Thanks for sharing it (again) and I hope you and your partner-in-crime (InaneGlory, right?) both have a great response to your PA sales.

I'm merely a Dazaholic, but I'll share the origin of my username... Back in the good ol' days, old by internet standards, I worked in internet marketing. That is to say, I was a consultant to people who needed help marketing their wares online, people like DAZ, for instance. I was not part of the "Internet Marketing" niche. (I started calling myself an "iMarketing Consultant, trying to distance myself from that crowd!) My real name can be found peppered all over the web on forums and blogs and such, all having to do with online marketing and SEO, etc.

    Then I wrote a novel.

By the time I published the book, (on Amazon, of course,) I had decided to use a pen name. Mostly because my real name was so deeply entrenched in non-fiction, marketing stuff; But in part because there was already a published author of the same name. As a nod to my late mother, I chose Lorraine, (a middle name she and I share,) and as a nod to my husband, I made Adair the last name. (Adair is his middle name.) When I started doing 3D art, I decided to make a variation of the pen name. So L'Adair, is a contraction of Lorraine Adair.

But you can call me "Anita," my real first name.

I first used this username when I was much younger, somewhat depressed, and more likely to settle on the morbidly dramatic (admittedly I'm not un-fond of morbid drama now either). I was on a TES IV message board and I chose it based on a poem by William Blake:

The sword sung on the barren heath,

    The sickle in the fruitful field;

The sword he sung a song of death,

But could not make the sickle yield.

Well, there's no denying, DestinysGarden and SickleYield have far more interesting stories behind their names. I hope we see a lot more backstories. These are very interesting. Great topic, pds!

Mine kinna means a couple things. Its latin for firesnake and Im a fire snake in eastern astrology. Its also a nod to Wadjet, the serpent goddess in Egypt who took the form of the Uraeus on Pharaoh's crown. The belief is that it would come to life and spit fire at his enemies. Plus, I like snakes (I live in the Everglades lol) And fire :laffs like Beavis:

  • Nice idea, pds. There are definitely a lot of PA's I'm curious to hear the artist name story about. Now I'm also curious about your name, is it an abbreviation for something?

I'm merely a dazaholic, so, don't mean to take the PA's spotlight. My username was inspired by a story I read in a children's book about elves and fairies. It was next to a picture of a small elf, who was singing songs while flying around on the back of a bat. The story was titled "Singer of the wind". Both the picture and the title kinda sticked with me. So when I had to pick a username for DA, I translated it to French (at the time my favorite language, since I had a lot of childhood memories with it).

I have no big story on my PA name......I first registered "RawArt" as my business name in the 90's when I tried to make a career out of website design (didn't work well)...so when I started selling products I figured that since I had the name registered it is good enough to use for this.

Rawn (it also allows me to play with my real name "Ron" when I sign things)

  • I used to be known by the moniker "Opusii" (and still am in some circles) back in the days of the Commodore VIC/C64/Amiga and used it for credit in the games and software I helped create.  I also used it as a Contributing Author on QuantumLink (became AOL) and BIX.  However, many contracts require concrete "proof" of one's works and proving that I indeed was "Opusii" was a real PITA so I decided that the nom de plume era was over.  Also, having "AKA" is a hindrance for a lot of the work that I do since it requires background checks, so I started going by my real name.

  • I am not a pa but a dazaholic.  I do not know where I got the name Kulay from but I used that name originally a wolf character in my story. There was a baby Dragon named Chika and a wolf named Kulay.  For some reason I used the name Kulay to register my daz account with and it stuck.

I registered at daz over a decade ago as I wanted to get into 3d art and was looking for software to get into.  I heard about this Victoria 3 figure and wanted to get her legally.  It was shortly after I registered I got a starter bundle with a version of Victoria and Michael 3.

Later on I tried to change my username from Kulay to something else but that did not much good.   Now I am Kulay Wolf.

    ...just another Dazaholic here.

The name I use, "Kyoto Kid", is that of my longest running character in the Shadowrun RPG world who is referred to as a "gunslinger adept".  Her "street name" comes from a combination her love of the old wild west as well as where she spent many years in Japan at a dojo where she was trained in the fine art of Kenjutsu. I came up wth the original concept for the character in the early 90s, more than a decade before the film Kill Bill, though she does have a few  of the "Brides" traits (including a strong desire for revenge which relates to her backstory) and is just as efficient and deadly of a combatant.

I also use the name on several other forums including those related to the Shadowrun RPG and  tabletop gaming in general.

I'm just a DAZ-aholic; also, lazy and somewhat unimaginative - so I just reversed the spelling of my last name. :-)

(too many kauffmans in Northern Indiana anyway).laugh

  • Well I know how a few of them got their names, Stonemason actually is a Stonemason for example.

They do not always use the same names on the forum though as I found but unlike me, a nondescript customer do tend to stick with one at least laugh

I'm a DAZ-aholic, but still in denial. My handle's not particularly imaginative either. My initials. Es Em Wy = S.M.Y.

  • Something of a fan of the Marvel Comics character Blade which is type of vampire that can walk around in the daylight; a daywalker. I started using this as a forum name in 2003.

Another Daz-aholic (also in denial!) here, my username came about after I decided that the world was full of single-word successes beginning with the letter 'A' (or at least the UK is, anyway) - Asda, Argos, Amazon... and so Astracadia was born.

My favourite P.A. handle is FirstBastion's - it makes me smile nearly every time I see it :)

I just buy a lot of stuff from the Daz store, am not a PA.  Diomedes was a Greek hero in the Illiad - the Trojan War.  He was also a heroic figure in Greek folklore before the time that the Trojan War takes place.  His name is sometimes spelled Diomede. In the story, he generally acts honorably, professionally, and competently. He is very unlike many of the other Greeks in the Illiad.  Achiles is petulent and vindictive.  Ulysses is deceptive.  Agamemnon is greedy and selfish.  Diomedes wounded the war god Ares (Mars) with a spear.  Diomede once won badass of the week.

    Good enough for me.  yes

  • Mine stems from way when my father tricked my mother into naming me Mariacristina thinking they'd call me Maria which was his mother's name.  My mom would have none of it and they called me Cristina which they shortened to Tina, which I loathed.  When I turned 13, I would only answer to Cris (I would completely ignore anyone calling me otherwise) and it turned out that Cris Palomino sounded good as an artist's name when I decided to become one.  I decided I wanted people to know me by my real name and that's what I use.  I did use what I was going to use as a company name, Elektralusion, for a time, but decided I wanted my name instead for that, too.

OTOH, the story behind my sig is better, imo.  When I would sign as CP, one of my best friends at Disney, who was Japanese told me he thought it looked like the kanji for woman, "onna", which, indeed, it did.  I took the kanji and added two squiggles to make it look like a C and P, and thus my signature was born.

  • I work primarily on NPR algorithms, and am a huge fan of da Vinci. His work, both as an artist and in the sciences, has always inspired me. The name seemed fitting for one trying to get a computer to draw/paint in a more human-like fashion:

This has been a most interesting thread - thank you for starting it, pds!

This is a very cool thread. I admit to being curious about usernames. I am a Dazaholic to be sure, and proud Irish mother to two redheads (and one blondy-brown head). Neither my hubby nor I have red hair, so we are always asked where the Redz came from. (It came from our mothers)

  • Well, I'm a Dazaholic, too.  My username isn't all that exciting and perhaps a touch boring.  I've been a knitter ever since the age of 13 back in the 70s when it was popular for girls of any age to knit and crochet.  So, I always had a project of some sort going and small projects are very portable and easy to do whilst waiting for one's children.  When I first needed a username, I was that mom.  You know the one who would go to all of their kids' events and would always be knitting while waiting for the kids to finish their activities.  I had even taken to carrying around extra yarn and needles for those times when kids would ask what I was doing and I would end up teaching them how to knit.  I love passing on knowledge and encouraging an appreciation for fiber crafts. ;)  So, it seemed rather apropos to use Knittingmommy when I needed a username.  I have been using that username for a long time and that's even what I use for my knitting blog and FB.  Unfortunately, I haven't done a whole lot of knitting or other crafts since discovering DAZ and my blog is developing dust bunnies.  I really should get back to that.  :)

When I was born I had the most common first name and 5th most common last name in the English-speaking world.  In college I picked up the nickname Misha, which was what I chose to use online.  When I became disabled and couldn't work full-time and lost my job, I started using Fix My PC Mike for my part-time computer repair work.

I wish I had a cool story for mine. I'm just a fan of artistic makeup. :) I used to want to be a makeup artist for Hollywood - doing movies and stuff (have you seen the celebrity before and after makeup shots? No one can say that makeup isn't an artform! lol). But instead I fell into comic book art and commission art.

I couldn't be happier with my life choices though - comic art and commission art is awesome and I get to work from home. It doesn't pay much, but at least I enjoy what I do - which is worth more to me then bringing in more money but grinding away at a job I hate. I know a lot of people aren't able to do that though, so I realize I'm pretty blessed to be able to. I'm thankful that I can, and really wish everyone was able to do what they love for a living.

    Mine...

Well, growing up I was awkward.  Seriously.  I am the only person who's been able to fall between two buildings half-way (think splits) and get stuck that way for a good hour before getting help and getting out (I was 13).  I tried to cook a frozen TV dinner on an electric stovetop and didn't know it was on.  I put my hand onto the burner and had to use a spatula to get it off-I was 6.  I've fallen ten feet out of a tree onto the paved road under the branch I was on at 9 and tore almost all of the tendons in my right ankle.  The old-fashioned 'merry go rounds' in elementary school-I was on one and ended up getting flung off of it onto the surrounding cement (go the school for thinking that was a good idea) and ripped up my face, broke my front tooth in half ..again at the age of 9.  I tried jumping off of a swing at 11, changed my mind and tried to hang on and ended up with a compound break that had my right arm in the shape of V from elbow to wrist. Broke my tooth again after getting it fixed at 11.  Broke it again at 13 after getting it fixed.. again.  My father said Darwin would have loved me because I'd probably prove his theory with all of the mishaps I've had before I hit 14 and I was "lucky to be breathing" by that point.

    Viola.  Moniker. ;)
