Sent you a note so I won't be tying up the forum.

Os the problem with PP2014 or Poser 11?

OK, I need some opinions. It looks like my long-simmering project "Star Trek: Reanimated" may finally be on the front burner; I've been approached by a professional animator who had a similar project in mind, who had seen my artwork and sets, and it looks like we will be collaborating to see it into production.

Our production pipeline is going to be based on Poser, using M4 and V4, with Lightwave for additional modeling and animation. I know the Courageous and Valiant outfits are popular for TOS conversion for those figures, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend any better uniform bases; I'm mostly concerned with the unseen transparent areas affecting the flow of the outfit in animation, and also, I'm not fond of only approximating the correct tailoring, esp. the collar area of the women's uniforms. I really like Oshikai's Retro Skirt, but it's for Aiko 3, and my attempts to animate it as a dynamic object (after properly adjusting its fit, of course) are so far very much less than successful (I have fragments of the OBJ that seem anchored to points on the floor once the simulation begins, and 30 frames of simulation take a full day! - it's a very poly-heavy model).

Thanks, all, for any info you have, and I'm excited at the new possibilities! :D

Sounds great, Congrats! Hoped you don't run into certain legal problems.

Thanks, Madison! Yeah, that seems to be the SOP for CBS/Paramount these days - "If we can't interest the fans in what we're doing, we can at least prevent them from doing their own." wink Hopefully, this announcement from J.J. Abrams a couple weeks ago will be part of an effort on CBS/Paramount to work WITH the fans, to devise a working template everyone can be happy with that encourages involvement and creativity, and establishes boundaries that are clear and acceptable to everyone. Fingers crossed!

Seems to me, a good idea would be to offer to show the fan films as an "opening act" like back when cartoons preceeded the main feature. Not only would that encourage thefan companies to up their game visually and quality-wise, it would also give Paramount twice the product to show. maybe some kind of deal could be worked out that would add the fan film to a DVD as a special feature with a small share of the profits going back into the fan film production.

       I'm dreaming, I know...

In LW you should, as I recall, be able to load the desired morphs as Morph maps (I think LW had a tool to copy the shape from a model on a background layer to a morph on the current layer), then delete the unwanted mesh without losing UVs or morphs. Then export the OBJ back out and point the CR2 to that, then export the morphs as OBJ and batch-load them on the new version of the outfit.

  • PtropePtrope Posts: 696

I'll have to try that, Richard - I use LW primarily for hard-surface modeling, and I don't have much experience trying more organic shapes, and none with morphs inside LW. I was thinking about the possibility of simply trying to import an existing V4 dress rig to the modified OBJ I created for the Retro Skirt, then if that worked, transferring the morphs inside Poser. Barring all that, I can hope that Oshikai decides to port the dress over to V4 ;). If dynamic simulation can't proceed any faster than what I've been able to do, it'll take another 6 years to complete the animation wink.

At least some of the morph stuff in LW was developed for Daz, and used to be given free to PAs before the tools were sold to newtek for inclusion in the base LW8+, so they are well designed for our work. The main thing you have to watch is deleting (or dividing) mesha cross UV seams as that can end up with a vertex being welded when it should be split on the UV map - but that is fairly easy to fix usually.

NVent3D's Trailblazer outfits on Vanishing Point are a good match to the TOS Style, and they're available for V4 and M4.

I don't use Poser, but does Genesis work well in it? If so, the Retro Skirt will autofit for V4's shape as long as you have the Aiko 3 shape for Genesis.

The other possibilty would be to see if someone who works with Marvelous Designer would make some custom clothes for you from the original sewing patterns.

I'm trying to get Daz Studio right now so I can get some of  Gensis 3 female's outfits so I can convert them for V4. But everytime I register, the ^%&^ site klicks me over to the d(*&^n dashboard.

Good luck I've yet to get anything to export out of Studio into Poser and be usable

The way I understand it, you'rer supposed to be able to create "Poser companion files" that will let you use the outfits in Poser- with Dyson I'm assuming, which I went to great trouble to install yesterday. But everytime I regesiter, I get thrown to the dashboard instead of to a place where I can download the d(&*n program. I've tried 4 times now.

Edit: Finally go it. But it looks like I wasted my time. Apparently the "Poser Companion Files" can only be created in Poser.

This might help mdbruffy, PCFs are made in the Content Library pane, which isn't a place most would look for it.

Thank you, nightwolf. I've got it book marked. I'll never understand why they don't put out more of these kind of normal outfits for all the figures.

Not skimpy enough would be my guess

Probably. They don't stop to think that there are other kinds of projects that don't require the female character to bare it all.

I finally got it after trying about 5 times.Content's installed. Now I've having trouble getting the drop down menus to say what I need. I'm tryting to convert the G3 9 to5 outfit for use in Poser. I had it on screen, clicked Daz Studio formats like I was supposed to  and the drop down menu was supposed to have an option "Create Poser comanpion files". This has not shown up.

mdbruffy, the Poser Companion Files command is part of the Content Library pane options.  Right click on the tab where it says "Content Library".

I did that and nothing related to Poser showed up.

You should post a screenshot of what you're seeing.  From what I can tell, the command is independant of what is selected in the pane, so it should be showing for you.

Here it is. This is all that's shown up:

You want to click on the label that says "Content Library" or on the rectangle with horizontal lines in the upper corner.

Fixmypcmike, that was never said in any of the material I saw. Thank you.The only thing that was written down was to right click on "Daz Studio formats" not one word about the rest of it.

Edit: That worked! Thank you again!

One more question and I'll get out of the forum- (all of this shouldn't have been here, interupting this forum to begin with). The files are showing up in the runtime just fine. But when I click on them, I can't get the items to show up in the work window.

  • fixmypcmikefixmypcmike Posts: 19,689

Do you have the Data folder for the items alongside a mapped Runtime folder?

  • mdbruffymdbruffy Posts: 2,345

    I have Poser11 content>Runtime>DSON>autoadapted>data

That's the way it set itself up.

  • fixmypcmikefixmypcmike Posts: 19,689

You also need the Data and Runtime folders from the product in a mapped location.

  • mdbruffymdbruffy Posts: 2,345

    I've got this: Poser11 content>Runtime>DSON>autoadapted>data

    and:

    Poser 11 content> Runtime>Libraries>Character>clothing> Daz Clothing>9 To 5 Outfit

So what am I missing? The other Genesis outfits are showing up. I just pulled up the Boy's t-shirt and it loaded fine.
