Professor Gottlieb Krautfleden’s anti-aging machine - Part III

Helga Haferflocken’s head started to spin again, but her body ached less this time, Suddenly she found herself in her hometown, but in a time long gone. She saw a merchant selling his inventions, and she recognized both the name and appearance. She walk straight up to him and said - “Whatever you do, never ever have children!”. Suddenly her head spun, and she woke up in her bed, in her old room, not a day younger. The weird lamp in the ceiling, the one her nephew Gottlieb had made, was not there.

Cormac s luck had given out.  Even the luck of the Irish can only go so far.  As his body drifted into the deep, with his last flicker of life force he glimpsed an Antarean Xeno Marine Biologist… obviously a hallucination.

    Cormac's Tale

    Part Two – Abduction

The Antareans had arrived to study sea life.  And for the life of them they could not understand how this form could possibly survive the rigors of the ocean.  It was just so maladapted.  They tested food preferences by attempting to feed it sea urchins and octopi.  Raw, of course, for it was extremely rare for a marine life form to have invented fire.

Thanks Chanteur de Vent for your comments

@Totte #2-2  Is it real?  Is it a dream?  Technically she has been made younger and dropped into an adventure.  Good one!

#2-3  What an enigma!!  If he didn t send her back he would still exist.  But if he doesn t exist how can she have been sent back to prevent his birth?  Great thought provoking story.  caught in a time warp!

Luci45 #3  Great images as usual. Love the lighting!  I swear that the scientist on the right is Balthazar the former owner of Arkana Cabana (nick cage) from the sorceror s apprentice. And the one on the left maybe Drew Carey.  Great story too! I m also thinking of whoopi goldberg on her motorcycle! (thief)

    Cormac's Tale

Part Three – Catch and Release

Their studies done.  The Antareans, following the prime directive returned all their study animals to their natural environment.  They realized that animals housed and fed were reluctant to go back to living by their own wits.  So the animal handlers used shields and brooms to prod them back into their deep water home.  For some reason Cormac really put up a fight… obviously he had become spoiled by their attentions.

Now I have to go and think hard on what I am going to do for this story!!!

They took their little adventure through the well with Sharkie the great white Shark and discovered some old skulls and alot of confederate paper money. Darma was quite excited at this hostorical find and wanted to call the museum to see how much it would be worth to them. Harold had other pans for the money, he wanted to spend it at the stores. Darma told him he had to turn it into the museum and they would pay them in the todays currency! So that is what they did and they got over 1 million dollars for the treasures including the skulls. The End.

    Thank you - Chanteur-de-Vent and Luci45.

Luci45 - Nice story, with great imagery. Love the chase scene - image #2.

Totte - Great adventure, Aunt Helga's time traveling experience - changes history, and while I can't blame her for being miffed... poor Gottlieb.

Gopherus - Fantastic fantasy. I don't know... I'm thinking Cormac may be suffering from PTSD by that last frame and who could blame him.

Saphirewild - Excellent - nothing is more satisfying than finding the treasure, especially - when everyone ends up rich.

    Title: All In The Family

    Part 1: Black Sheep

    Family gatherings suck.

There's a pervasive myth floating around human society that elves are wise, serene, mystical beings who never get caught up in petty squabbles.  And, sure, those of us with pointy ears like to pretend all of that is true.  It makes us feel superior to the unwashed, hairy, short-lived masses.  It gives us an excuse to dress in obscenely ornate clothing and wear tiaras. (And don't fool yourself.  Not just anyone can carry off wearing a tiara while camping in the wilderness. You've really gotta believe your own PR, or you just end up looking stupid.)  It's a lovely idea that creates an air of otherworldly authority whenever an elf is nearby.

It is, unfortunately, also total fiction.

Anyone who has ever been to Moon's Eve dinner with my extended family would see through the lie in about four seconds.  My mother blames her sister, Bellethryal, for the weekly mealtime unrest.  Ever since Aunt Belle defied their overprotective parents and married Gzarth, bad-boy Prince of the Underdark, it's been difficult to maintain civil conversation at the dinner table.  Honestly, though, I blame Dad as much as anyone.  His staunch conservatism and refusal to avoid topics relating to religion and politics are usually what trigger the quick decline into belligerent chaos.  I'm not sure what he expects to gain from debating theology with his Lolth-cultist in-laws.  By now, you'd think he'd understand that being a subject of the Spider Queen has a way of changing your perspective.  We all know that, in his youth, Uncle Gzarth fed at least two of his brothers to drider handmaidens as ritual sacrifices. A guy like that isn't going to back down from a pansy, opinionated wood-elf wielding a salad fork.

Still, none of this would be more than cheap entertainment for me, were it not for Urmesandra.  Cousin Urm (as she hates to be called) is the only child of our resident evil kin.  It's bad enough that she's an only child.  Being raised in a malevolent matriarchic theocracy has turned her into the worst kind of spoiled brat that the universe could possibly spawn.  She's petulant, impatient, condescending, and a snob of the worst order.  I think she'd like nothing more than to pretend my family and I don't exist, but I have too much of my father in me to let the purple princess treat me as though I'm invisible.

Which is why, every week like clockwork, after the dishes have been cleared and everyone over the age of 480 has retired for port and pipe smoke, Urm and I quietly find a secluded place where we can do our best to murder each other.

Tonight has been rough.  I wasn't paying attention when I refastened the buckle on my brand new, shimmery Boots of Elvenkind and the Lavender Lowlife got the drop on me, kicking dirt into my face while simultaneously insulting my parentage.  We both know that using battle magic in the front yard is forbidden.  We've been warned.  We've been threatened.  We've even been punished.  We just… don't care.  And I may not have landed the first blow in tonight's battle royale, but I'm not ready to concede defeat by a long shot.

Hell, no.  That Purple Prima Donna is going down.

So Auntie Haferflocken would be a flakey old blonde...  And Krautfleden would be a person whose head is bloated with gas like a fermenting cabbage?

Actually bread made with fermenting cabbage instead of yeast or baking soda sounds like something i d like to try.

@Karibou #1A  Nice start!  Like your colors and use of shadows. Circle of protection yellow versus fireball purple?  Should work.  This is going to be some tale you ve started.

I am in a bit of a quandary, here.  I've got all of the elements for the final scene in the story, but when I put them all together and try to render it, DS crashes: out-of-memory.  And it takes for-freakin'-ever to get to that point; the machine becomes unresponsive for long periods of time (twenty-some minutes between updates to the system clock, even!  Hell, it takes almost that long just to load the damn thing in the first place!)  It is a pretty massive scene, I'll admit: a total of a dozen figures, if you include the vehicles -- which I do -- plus  all the clothing, and the environments; and there are two of those.  Easily the biggest scene I've ever put together.

Here's the quandary: do I haul my tuchus to Best Buy for a memory upgrade (something I've been intending to do since I bought the machine), or re-work the scene into something smaller and more manageable, perhaps even to tear a page out of Luci's book, and build a multi-panel, quasi-comic (sorry -- 'graphic novel') kind of thing...?

You can always render in two parts and do some layering in postwork...

That’s what I would do. Even with max RAM, a scene that big might take *forever* to render.

That's pretty much what I ended up doing.  Except that I rendered in four passes, and then composited in GIMP.

I'm not too terribly happy with the result, mostly because I totally spaced on the whole 'ambient' concept in Iray, so the composited layers are kind of washed out.  Anyway, here it is....

As the police stuffed the killer into the back of the patrol car, he was heard to say, "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't have been for those meddling kids!"

"Flattery will get you nowhere, pal," Alexis said snarkily.  "I haven't been a 'kid' since the beginning of the Clinton Administration!"

"I'm really sorry about your shoes," Velma said to Alexis.  "I'll buy you a new pair."

"Ooh, shoes shopping!" Alexis said with undisguised enthusiasm.  "Sounds like a plan!"

"That's more Daphne's schtik," Velma remarked.  "But, hey, I'll suck it up and take one for the team."

Well, DUH!  By this time, pretty much all of them!
Actually, I re-used the A Quiet Repose pose set (with a couple of tweaks).  And, of course, everything I had used in the previous two images.

    Also used:
    CV-1 Police Car (Renderosity)
Ambulance by Vanishing Point (also Renderosity)
    Michael 4
    Victoria 4
Real World Heroes Police Officer for M4 and V4
Derek HD for Genesis 2 Male
    Drifter Hair
Blue Collar Basics Coverall for G2M/F (Twice)
Bijou for Genesis 2 Female (I paid retail for the b**ch; you know I'm gonna use the hell out of her!)
Elite Ponytail for Genesis 2 Female
Mad Nurse for Genesis 2 Female (What can I say -- she needed shoes!)

Wow, that was an ambitious undertaking, Ken. How did you even move around in the viewport with all that loaded?

    Slowly.  Ponderously so!

This weekend, I'm heading south, either to Fry's in Houston, or Best Buy (in Conroe -- considerably closer), to get a memory upgrade.  I only have 8GB in this thing now, and it maxes out at 16 -- so I'm going to max it out.  (I've already replaced the hard disk; went from 1TB up to 2 -- and it's already a skosh over half-full.  Mostly 3-D content.  Fortunately, that particular metric is well covered: I have a total of 15 TB of online storage, with another 2TB in "portable" devices -- external USB drives that I can carry around with me.  So that ought to hold me for a few months.)
