Well, here it is. I downsized a lot of "clutter." Wish I'd had more time to play, but the clock is ticking and I'm tired of looking at it!
Items used in this render are shown in red.

Title: All In The Family
Part 3: Pass The Peace Pipe, Sister
Every cloud has its silver lining. And in this case, the silver lining is a cloud -- of smoke, that is. It seems that the Grell's last meal was fond of his hookah, because he'd brought it along for luck when he'd attempted to slay the tentacled beast. Unfortunately, his hookah wasn't terribly lucky. It apparently wasn't very tasty either, because the Grell had regurgitated the pipe through its slimy maw at the same time that it belched up the bones of its former owner.
You might think that elves are much too discerning and sophisticated to light up a hookah which had recently been submerged in the gut of a Grell. And maybe, on an ordinary day, in the company of the unwashed, hairy, short-lived public, we might indeed be above such things.
But not today.
As we sit here, surrounded by soothing pipe smoke, Urm and I are shocked to discover we now agree on many things. For one, we both agree that trying to kill each other every week for most of our lives had certainly saved those lives today. It took every nasty, underhanded, sinister spell in our arsenal to subdue and slay the wretched Grell. And even then, it had been a very close call.
Urm and I also agree that we probably killed more than one Grell today -- it's frankly hard to tell, since the beast seems to be made of nothing but countless slimy tentacles that would randomly poke up from the dirt. But since they've finally stopped ambushing us, we think we've managed to kill it. Or them. Or whatever the blasted creature(s) was made of.
Finally, Urm and I agree that Moon's Eve dinners will be far more enjoyable from now on. Don't get me wrong -- we have no intention of settling down for dessert and conversation after the dishes are put away. If our fathers thought that this episode would quell our desire to cast spells on the front lawn, they were dead wrong. In fact, I suspect that their "punishment" is going to have quite the opposite effect from what they'd intended. Now that Urm and I have seen what the other is really capable of, we're dying to learn magic from each other.
And so, even though the pipe smoke is a little more flavorful than it might have been before falling into the belly of a Grell (or five), and even though I've hopelessly scuffed my shiny new Boots of Elvenkind, I've got to admit that today turned out to be a pretty decent affair. And who knows? Maybe next week, we'll be going after an aboleth. Or a dretch. Or maybe even a dragon.
Or... maybe we'll just set the petunias on fire and call it a day.
Now I have to figure out how to squash that into 15 lines of text! I seem to have missed that part until now. *groan* Lol.
Okay, it's 15 lines on my monitor. If I shrink the window, it definitely goes over the limit. Totte, can you confirm that it's okay? If it isn't, I'll edit it down more. You probably won't see this in time for me to change anything before the contest closes, but I'll assume you'll let me repair the entry after the deadline if it's too long.
And it's beautiful! I'm so glad you got it done.
That's as 15-ish it will get, well done!
Strong with the edit she is! And I think it's 30 minues to closing or 30m past, damn timezones, I close it in 30 then,. lol
Lol forum decided that Kariou said a lot of empty things, ROFL!!
thanks luci for your comments
@karibou Alright! you did it! and a colorful ending it was. well done!
So - closed - will need my brain to come together again from the flu before I can set up the votings, but as a teaser for you all and thanks to the vivid feverish dreams I had I came up with what I think is a brilliant theme for the next contest.
So, now I got you all alert ;-)
Hey, folks....
I was browsing through the Entries Only thread, and I noticed something very odd. In my last entry, the third (out of four) render is not the one that should be there. In fact, it isn't even mine!
What happened!?
EDIT: Okay, I think I got it fixed. For now. But that was very unnerving!
Was it there before? or did you post the wrong link, or if it was there before, has the forum hamsters started to prank you?
I refreshed the link, and was able to get it back. I'm not sure what -- or whose -- it was earlier, but it definitely was not one of mine. I didn't recognize it at all; not even the overall style.
Maybe a bit got flipped, and pointed the link to some -- dare I say it? -- 'random' image in the uploads archive. (How apropos!)
I was semi-deliberately avoiding this thread until I'd finished my last entry (I was afraid to steal any ideas when I didn't have too many of my own) so I have a lot of catching up to do. On the plus side, doing it today will keep it fresh in the memory for the voting round.
Totte #2-1/2/3 - I loved Prof Krautfleden's weird headgear and equipment and Aunt Helga's expression in part 1. It's a great cautionary tale about tweaking with time: poor (never-to-be) Prof Krautfleden!
Ken OBanion #1-2/3 - so much happening in both of those! I'm not surprised you had some computer problems - but hey what's money for? And a great traditional ending too.
Luci45 #3-1/2/3 - Another lovely set of renders, very pretty colours and nice use of effects too. I'm sure Roland made it home OK (I would definitely trust Aunt Maura and her talents)
Gopherus #3-A/B/C - I love the use of greenish colours in the first two for undersea and for the Irish connection to your story. Poor Cormac, doomed then rescued then doomed again! I hope he got to safety eventually.
Saphirewild #1-3 - so a happy ending for them all. The chimp looks less than impressed with their treasure though!
Karibou #1-A/B/C - that's one big big story, and really wittily written - I really enjoyed reading it - and I'm amazed you managed to cut it down so much! Lovely renders too. I'm so pleased you managed to finish it on time.
Gopherus #4-A/B/C - grand opera time! Nice idea. I love the monkey-lady in the medieval outfit and the frost giant ice-cream vendor and the colour scheme is really pretty throughout.
Totte #3-1/2/3 - nice start (you can feel her mind whirring when she sees that poster) and a very satisfying ending. Good story (and good renders too).
Luci45 #4-1/2/3 - I like what passes for fun in the first one! And that's a very stragtegically placed bit of electronics in the second (but you got away with it ) Dr Schwatzer makes a nice mad scientist, but luckily he turned out to be less mad than average when he fitted those off switches.
Ken OBanion #2-1/2/3/etc - ooooh, spooky! Nice build up story, then it turns out to be another Scooby tale - I definitely wasn't expecting that! (But yes, I probably was expecting image 4 by the time it arrived)
Chanteur-de-Vent #1 - 1/2/3 - good story, nice twist on the familiar Prince-saves-Princess-and-they-live-happily-ever-after tale. Nice renders too - I especially like the water and DOF in the second part, but they are all really beautiful.
Purrkat #2-1/2/3 - well this looked from the start like it wasn't going to end well! Lovely renders again (it's going to be so hard to choose for the vote) and a another well-written story (same problem).
Luci45 #5-1/2/3 - another great bit of comic fun! I like the text "... and maybe attract women" (he wishes? I thought) but then: lo his dreams came true! Your aging of Jennie works really well. Again, I wasn't expecting that ending!
Gopherus #5-A/B/C - You've got an amazing imagination! I thought I recognised the "St Brutus" name, then when I saw the boy wizard in part 2 I realised where from. Great poses and so much to look at in all three images.
Purrkat, Luci45: thanks for your comments on mine.
Gopherus: thanks for you comments too - funny, I've always been an insect-target myself (they flew straight past both my parents when I was a kid, also my husband nowadays) and I have always loved bananas - I never thought they might be connected.
So bye- bye RRRR Story Render (for this year perhaps) - and good luck to everyone!
Just want to say I was very impressed with some of the stories! I get the feeling some of you are writers on the side.... Sorry I missed this one. Will there be another soon??? :) Such a cool idea!
Don't know when another 'Story' contest will happen, but there will definitely be another RRRR! That's a given!
Imaginary "LIKE" clicked. Hmm, wish they could add that to the forums...
thanks Melanie for your comments. When I was a kid my dad subscribed to Scientific American. They wrote up an experiement, i think it was in Denmark, about female mosquitos being attracted to people who had eaten bananas. afterwards i d avoid them before bedtime. (male mosquitos don t bother people and only suck on plants). The opera idea came from a Marx brothers movie where they redid the music with Zeppo singing the lyrics "I Want My Shirt"
Thank you, MelanieL. I am also a mosquito magnet. So Gopherus, if eating bananas attracts them - would eating garlic, repel them?
Karibou - Lovely renders - great characters - nice rich colors.
@ purrkat i m thinking that it will. they may give you a fly by but they should be discouraged from landing i believe that some of the research into garlic repulsion was done at the university of california riverside campus. i read this stuff for the same reason as you... that mosquitos find me to their taste.
Garlic, huh? I probably eat nearly as much of that as bananas in the Winter - but then the biting insects don't tend to be out at that time of year so I can't say whether it works.
I remember that movie!
"I want my shirt, I want my shirt! I won't be happy without my shirt!"
And Carmen is one of my all-time favorite operas! (After Wagner's Ring Cycle.)
(Did you know that the word 'opera' is the plural of the word 'opus'?)
it never occurred to me about opera being a plural of opus
that "Cocoanuts" tune from carmen is another of those that get in your head and you can t get them out.
@melanie garlic and bananas! mix in some avocados and mangos... guacamole and fruit salad... what more could you ask for.
Now we've gone from Carmen to Carmen Miranda!
Hmm... I notice we have more activity on this closed thread than we did when it was open. I guess we are just waiting for voting to open.
LOL! How true... it s the post contest wrap
We're in 'decompression mode', after the flurry of activity during the contest...!
I read decomposing which is more like how I'm feeling, lol...
I hope that flu leaves you pretty soon, though we will likely all be thankful for the brilliant theme for the next contest provided by your vivid feverish dreams. I can hardly wait.
