I am in a bit of a quandary, here.  I've got all of the elements for the final scene in the story, but when I put them all together and try to render it, DS crashes: out-of-memory.  And it takes for-freakin'-ever to get to that point; the machine becomes unresponsive for long periods of time (twenty-some minutes between updates to the system clock, even!  Hell, it takes almost that long just to load the damn thing in the first place!)  It is a pretty massive scene, I'll admit: a total of a dozen figures, if you include the vehicles -- which I do -- plus  all the clothing, and the environments; and there are two of those.  Easily the biggest scene I've ever put together.

Here's the quandary: do I haul my tuchus to Best Buy for a memory upgrade (something I've been intending to do since I bought the machine), or re-work the scene into something smaller and more manageable, perhaps even to tear a page out of Luci's book, and build a multi-panel, quasi-comic (sorry -- 'graphic novel') kind of thing...?

You can always render in two parts and do some layering in postwork...

That’s what I would do. Even with max RAM, a scene that big might take *forever* to render.

That's pretty much what I ended up doing.  Except that I rendered in four passes, and then composited in GIMP.

I'm not too terribly happy with the result, mostly because I totally spaced on the whole 'ambient' concept in Iray, so the composited layers are kind of washed out.  Anyway, here it is....

    <image #3>
    Used in this image:
Well, DUH!  By this time, pretty much all of them!
Actually, I re-used the A Quiet Repose pose set (with a couple of tweaks).  And, of course, everything I had used in the previous two images.

    Also used:
    CV-1 Police Car (Renderosity)
Ambulance by Vanishing Point (also Renderosity)
    Michael 4
    Victoria 4
Real World Heroes Police Officer for M4 and V4
Derek HD for Genesis 2 Male
    Drifter Hair
Blue Collar Basics Coverall for G2M/F (Twice)
Bijou for Genesis 2 Female (I paid retail for the b**ch; you know I'm gonna use the hell out of her!)
Elite Ponytail for Genesis 2 Female
Mad Nurse for Genesis 2 Female (What can I say -- she needed shoes!)

Image Title: Mystery Solved -- And Now It's Off To The Mall!

As the police stuffed the killer into the back of the patrol car, he was heard to say, "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't have been for those meddling kids!"

"Flattery will get you nowhere, pal," Alexis said snarkily.  "I haven't been a 'kid' since the beginning of the Clinton Administration!"

"I'm really sorry about your shoes," Velma said to Alexis.  "I'll buy you a new pair."

"Ooh, shoes shopping!" Alexis said with undisguised enthusiasm.  "Sounds like a plan!"

"That's more Daphne's schtik," Velma remarked.  "But, hey, I'll suck it up and take one for the team."

Wow, that was an ambitious undertaking, Ken. How did you even move around in the viewport with all that loaded?

I know I would have crashed a few times trying to get all that loaded into one scene!! I tip my hat off to you Ken for getting it all in there and getting it rendered out!!!!

Okay, it's on to round 2!

(Here's hoping I can actually get some rendering done!  I should, because I am now 'between assignments', and presumably have nothing but time on my hands!)

    The pull:

    1609 - Industrial Clutter 2
5874 - Everyday Labels and Signs
    4942 - Silent Illumination
    1184 - Chrystalline Hair
    1148 - La Llorona's Frock for Genesis 2 Female(s)
    288 - Friday Hair for Genesis 3 Female(s)
    4960 - Veranil M4 Unimesh Fits
3266 - Vintage for West Park Ablutions

    Well, this is....

Oh, who are we kidding?  This is a god-awful mess!

    Pray for me....

Wow, Ken, you did pack a lot of stuff in there, pretty cool scene in spite of washed-out look. I have 16GB of Ram and a pretty fast desktop but that scene would have slowed my system way down if not hanging it up. It isn't just all the figures - Forest always kills my computer. When I use it use it I do a render of it then use it as a background or else not have much else in the render,

@ken  #1C  That is one humongous scene!  And as Mike Myers might say... "A Real Scooby Doo" ending.  well done!

@Totte #3 - 1  Nice golden hue symbolizing the treasures to come.  Could Papa Gumpa be the long missing father of Forrest Gump who went on vacation and never came back.  Or perhaps the husband of Pachamama and the keeper of the Incan treasures?  Nice start to a crime caper.

Karibou - Great image - nice rich color with a lovely glow.
Ken OBanion- Happy ending and an amazing colossal render - Bravo!
Gopherus - Wonderful rhyme but I love this one, because - I love ice cream! My grandfather worked and lived on a dairy farm and yes, they had an ice cream stand.
    Totte - intriguing start...

Thanks Purrkat for your comments.  I grew up across the street from a dairy... no ice cream but we climbed and stacked the hay bales into forts.  I figure that if i eat "healthy" 90% of the time i can reward myself with seconds on icecream when birthday parties come around.

    image #1: The Colony
In their shiny brochures the Interplantary Settlement Council (ISC) promised a lifestyle beyond the wildest dreams of the immigrants settling in the new off-world colonies. But life in New Pocatello did not in the early years live up to the promises.  The population was small and scattered and little was offered in terms of entertainment and activities.

image #2: Dr Schwätzer's Cybernetics Lab
But the ISC had anticipated this situation and contracted Dr Schwätzer's Cybernetics Lab to provide a solution.  With his faithful assistants, Myra and Mara, the good doctor assembled a variety of appealing companions to help simulate the warm and happy feelings of home.

    image #2: Life Gets Better
Dr Schwätzer arrived with an abundance of friendly neighbors, pets and playmates. The settlers were at first wary of the life-like and indestructable simulacra, but soon learned that the on-off switches made them almost better than the real thing.

Another great one Luci!  And how cosmic that your pull would contain both the Raven and the Corvidae clothing.  I have a feeling that this tale is not yet completed as the simulcrums will find no need for the off switch and make the world their own.  Eeriely prophetic!  Machina ex Deum

The client was no one less than the famous hip-hop artist Shabby-T. When Tina, dress as a man in a motorcycle suit, came to collect the agreed payment of $10 million, Shabby-T jiust told her she will only get $2 million and not a cent more. Tina, bold as always, accepted the money, knowing that Shabby-T knows her only as Mr Slade. When she drove away, she made a quick to 911 call on a burner phone and left. And she smiled when she later in the evening watched some TV and saw Shabby-T in cuffs being pushed into a police car, score settled.

Edwardian Evening Suit for David 3

Image Title: The Back-Story -- A Spurned Lover, a Dark Betrayal, a Double Tragedy
Laurel and Conrad were lovers, back in the nineteen-thirties.  But Conrad was something of a gold-digger and, sadly for Laurel, she didn't have enough gold to keep Conrad's interest.  So Conrad turned his attentions toward Vanessa, the socialite daughter of the richest man in the state.

To be used so callously, and then cast aside in favor of another, caused Laurel's mind to snap.  Laurel crashed Conrad and Vanessa's private wedding, and vowed revenge before bolting from the chapel.  Later, during the reception, Vanessa had to visit the ladies' lounge -- only to find Laurel waiting for her.  After doing in her rival for Conrad's affections, Laurel turned the knife on herself....

Okay, this request is going to sound a bit off-the-wall, even for me!

I'm looking for a comic-style layout template for use in PhotoShop (or GIMP; six-point-oh of one, or a half-dozen of the other).  The layout I'm looking for is a three-panel, horizontal orientation, with the first panel having a fairly narrow -- say, 3-by-4 (width/height) -- aspect ratio, and the other two with a more traditional 4-by-3, or somewhere thereabouts.

I have a fairly comprehensive collection of comic templates, but none of them have the orientation I'm looking for.

Alternatively, if somebody has some weapons-grade GIMP (or PhotoShop) skill, perhaps a bit of instruction on how I can 'roll my own', so to speak.

    I'll appreciate all over ya...!

(And speaking of appreciating all over..., Thanks, barbult, for the pointer and the link; it was precisely what I was looking for, and then some!)

I use Comic Life. It's a pretty cheap program. You just drop and drag renders into it. It has lots of templates or you can make your own or alter the ones they have. Pretty simple to learn also.

I needed a laptop computer for the penultimate (you-all just knew I'd find a way to use that word, didn't you!? wink) scene, so I entered 'computer' into the search field on the DAZ store page.  (To see what I might already have, and if I do, where to find it.  Yeah, I really do have that much content!)  One of the items that was returned was 'Grenade Bundle'.

As a software developer by trade, I can definitely appreciate the sentiment, but..., not helpful, DAZ.

That seems about right. LOL. I recommend this freebie from Rendo: https://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/laptop-figure/68748

Title: The Story of prince Charming and princess Rebellina

    Part 1
Prince Charming was a only a half-blood (what you could see in his not perfectly white hair), so he knew he couldn't just marry a regular princess without leaving his castle. He had to perform an act of heroism and save one of those enchanted princesses, that were very hard to save. When he heard the Queen of Darkness abducted princess Rebellina and captured her inside a crystal coffin, he knew it was his chance. Off he went to the castle of the Queen. "Bring me the Floating Red Stone"  the Queen said "and I'll free your beloved princess".
(Used: Basic Hair, Bard Outfit, MFD for Genesis, Hanging Pod Chair, Lady Darkness)

    Part 2
After months of searching, the prince finally found the floating stone, deep into a godforsaken swamp. He defeated the guardian of the stone easily and hurried back to the queen.
(Used: Basic Hair, Bard Outfit, Flink's grass, Around the Campfire)

    Part 3
Unfortunately, princess Rebellina already had a beau she wanted to marry. But since he wasn't a prince, he couldn't apply for the job the Queen of Darkness asked. It was known, that only princes can save princesses. Yet, it didn't stop the suitor from taking Rebellina with him, once she and prince Charming left the castle.
(Used: Basic Hair, Bard Outfit, Jai Hair)

    Luci45 #3:
                      3A -
Love the expressions. The calm of the main character, the "old and wise" of Auntie Maura and the super well made "omg something's just happened, help" expression of the guy.
3B - I wonder how those "ethically challenged" scientists always seem to find some anomalies before the anomalies self-correct themselves. I mean, why did he have to actively seek the help of Auntie Maura, but didn't have to make any effort to be found my the scientists? It's unfair.
3C - I will bet he didn't safely return home. Otherwise the ending is just to good to be true. ;)

    Totte #3:
                      3C -
I guess it was a time-machine after all. But then, if the guy would never have had children, depending on the time-travel theory, there could be an infinite loop of alternating realities. Every even reality would contain the nephew and the time machine, every odd one would contain neither. Moreover highest chance that the life of the main character was highly affected by all the descendants of the Krautfelden, so many things shouldn't have changed, not just the lamp. But I love the sarcasm of it anyway.

    Gopherus #3:
                      3A -
I guess they guy was "lucky" to be found. He doesn't really look like a decent swimmer.
3B - Neither does he look like a decent experiment subject. Poor guy, it's a mircale he survived...
3C - Yep. Definitely spoiled. Nice pose.

    Saphirewild #1:
                      1C -
Looks like everything ends well. Somehow the ending reminds me of those strange fairytales fathers tend to tell, who don't have a lot of practice in story telling, but do their best. They can come up with wonderfully weird idea's. The story will have perfect logic, but the elements in it won't be exactly fairytale like.

    Karibou #1:
                      1A -
Wow, this one is beautiful. Read the whole pre-story, sounds intriguing. Love the magic effect and the way you played with the colors.

    Ken O'Banion #1:
                       1C -
A classical ending to a Scooby Doo adventure type indeed.

    Gopherus #4:
                       4A -
Wonderful expressions. I love this musical/opera feeling, when everybody is signing about what is happening.
4B - I don't know what this fat guy represents, but he's funny.
4C - And the fat guy is coming with them... I wonder if there is any ice cream left, looks like  this guy is planning to eat it himself. The rest has just to watch being jeoulous.

    Totte #3:
                       3A -
Very intriguing, especially since you can't see their faces.
3B - The statues look very nice. Fifteen minutes? That must have been a very tight schedule. Didn't they have surveillance camera's or something?
3C - Oh, the gold old cross-doublecross. Never mess with your partner in crime, or he might turn on you.

    Luci45 #4:
                       4A -
Looks nice, love the poses and the kids. I wonder if our planned Mars colony will look like that.
4B - The professor looks very pleased, love the white/grey hair. I bet he's a little bit crazy.
4C - You know you target a very known modern problem? That people actually prefer to communicate with robots than with real human beings, because robots will always support you and don't need attention when you don't feel like it? There is a book called "Alone together" that examines exactly that - how people tend to reduce their friends to a robot-like icon on their smartphone and evolve their robots to a human-imitating level. Anyway, well done. Love how the boy is jumping excitingly on the horse.

    Ken O'Banion #2:
                       1A -
Wonderful lighting, love how ghosty the girl turned out.
1B - Wow, what a drama. Never mess with a woman in love. She might do more damage to everything, the outside world and herself, than you would like.
