Daz Studio for VR paid or free?

I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to make VR video for my Gear VR. I'm planning on trying Daz for now since it seems the simples to use. To render it as 360 Stereoscopic video it looks like things get much more complicated. Unity looks like it would quite time consuming since it's more geared towards games. Other options also seem rather complicated.  Octane Render looks to be the best choice since they actually have a Daz plugin but it's expensive.

I was wondering if I can use the free version of Daz with Octane and the Daz plugin?

Also can anyone tell me what the customer service/support is like at Octane? Since I'm new to VR and programming and rendering aren't really my strong suit I may need some support. I ask because I was on the Otoy site nearly two days ago and at the point where I was considering buying it but I decided just to ask a couple quick questions in their forum. After posting I got a message saying the post would need to be approved first.  I'm still waiting!. It seems odd being that close to dropping 5 or 600 dollars on a program and then have it delayed for something like this. In the "VR questions" section of their forum the last post is from May 18.  Meanwhile I came to the Daz forum asking this question about the free version and had my post approved within a couple hours.

There's no paid version of DS anymore, the Pro version is free.

Otoy had last year a OctaneVR contest: https://home.otoy.com/vr-competition/ and the plugins listed are for Blender, Poser, Maya and 3ds max. There wasn't a daz plugin. From my experiments with the octane trial it looks like the daz plugin still doesn't support VR properly.

Here is the galery form the contest: https://render.otoy.com/vr_gallery.php

As shamanu999 wrote you may not actually "need" the OctaneRender for DAZ Studio plugin to render VR scenes.

    BUT

It may be helpfull in some case to:

    - Use the OctaneRender for DAZ Studio plugin OcDS to get a basic conversion of 3Delight or Iray materials to OctaneRender materials

    - Export from the OcDS plugin to OctaneRender standalone to render 360 Stereoscopic images

If you just use OctaneRender standalone you may need to invest more work to set up all materials from scratch.

compare for info about OcDS, OR standalone export:

I understand that your intention is to create scenes for VR devices. Still maybe it might actually help you to first try to render some normal 2D images in DAZ Studio with Iray to get a basic understanding how to create scenes, edit materials and make everything look exactly like your vision is.

If you enjoy that kind of work creating 2d images then you may find it could be benefitial to invest more money for OctaneRender for more advanced tools and workflows.

    But

Keep in mind that Nvidia also announced Iray VR Lite at GTC 2016.

Maybe sooner or later DAZ Studio Iray will get some updates to render images for VR devices as well...

if you are interested I have a Carrara thread, Brycers can do this too

DAZ studio needs the spherical camera but you could indeed use either the Octane plugin export or Alembic and obj export to set up in the standalone.
