Official : Vue to become open-source

This was recently posted on VUE Galleris Facebook page. The post is by Walther Beck and Vue users will recognize him as one of the staff (and I believe programmer) who worked for Vue when owned by Bentley.

Daniel Seebacher who replies to Walther was also involved with Vue's PlantFactory.

All the more reason for Daz to have some sort of bridge or export option to a Vue format. Sorry but there is an issue with Iray PBR materials in Vue as it does not conform to the traditonal PBR format.

I have been told this a few times by members of the Vue Galliers when I gripe about using DAZ assets exported as obj in Vue..

Opps... I truncated Daniels complete reply. Here it is...

Loss of PBR Translation: Standard 3D export files drop the advanced Iray-specific code. Only base image maps (like diffuse and bump) generally carry over. Vue cannot interpret the remaining mathematical instructions for Iray-specific glossiness, subsurface scattering, or complex layered materials. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Thanks for the heads-up on this.  I remember years back, slowly putting the cash away to buy the full version, but stopped the moment they mentioned "Subscription".

I'll have to take a curious look, especially as it's being Open-Sourced and they intend to use Cycles.  If I recall, my only issue with Vue was that it had no built-in character support.  I do remember Poser being supported by a plugin or something, but by then, I was already using Daz characters.

Open-Source is the way forward, though, and at least it has a future now !
It was mighty-fine of Bentley to go the length necessary to Open Source it.

I use DAZ characters in my Vue renders. I pose in DAZ and use 3Delight textures and export as an OBJ. It worked well. However I have not found an exceptable way to use Iray textures in Vue. According to other Vue users there is no way except to re-texture in Vye using Vue shaders. which just doesn't work for me.

I've asked the same question here and no one has suggested a way to convert Iray PBR materials to the industry standard PBR format.

    Cheers

Here are some of my Vue renders using DAZ characters and props with 3Delight textures.

Don't quote me on this, but I have a feeling Substance Painter might come in handy there, since you can map material types to output types, and Substance Painter supports them all as far as I can tell.  It makes me wonder if importing a Daz object in Daz-Mapped mode and exporting in Standard-PBR mode, would fix that.

Sadly I'm still learnng my way around it and don't have it installed at the moment due to messing around with Linux.

    Nice images by the way!

I tried to import a Daz prop into Daz but there is no option to import any model with the .DUF extension.

Doesn't need to be .DUF since the remapping of material channels is a feature of Substance Painter.

Not having it installed at the moment (as well as being a Substance Painter noob), there's nothing much I could advise other than to try exporting a basic prop from Daz Studio using .OBJ format, and make sure you set the export options to "Collect" all the texture maps.  Then, once you have the prop imported into Substance Painter with the materials mapped to the correct channels, try exporting in a mode that uses Standard PBR mapping.

The whole point of the suggestion is that Substance Painter allows you to create your own mappings for every material channel (and type) and save it as a custom export preset.  You might need to look into the Import and Export mapping options of Substance Painter to get an idea of what I'm getting at.  But basically, you can map any of Substance Painter's texture channel to any channel you like on export.  You can even set the bit depth and format of each texture channel's output individually if you like.

Once you have it all set up, you would then need to save the settings as an Export Preset, and use that preset whenever you want to use the textures in Vue.

Sorry but I do not have Substance Painter. I do have 3D Coat which I use for UV mapping and texturing as well as sculpting and retopologu work.

I've tried quite a few times over the years to do what you suggest in 3D Coat and no luck. Iray is propietary to Nvidia and not used by many 3D apps. So far it's only DAZ that does. I much prefer the PBR standard.

    Cheers

    kenmo,

Those Vue renders are impressive. I particularly like "Lazy Days" and "Race to the Swing" as they're lighthearted and easy on the eyes.

    Cheers!
