Split scenes and lighting

OK, here's what I want to do.

I have a fairly large indoor scene, the background of which is outside camera DoF and static. I have my main characters in the foreground and I want to animate them. At the moment, a still of this scene in 4k is taking 3-4 hours to render.

In order to save on time and resources, my plan is to render the background and the foreground separately. The animation will be done as a sequence of stills and then layered over the background. I have other effects I want to layer over the top afterwards as well.

My question is this. Is there a way I can keep the current lighting of the whole scene without having to have the background? Is there a way of creating an invisible background that mimics the lighting effects (reflection, etc), that is not resource heavy?

TIA.

You can render your background as an HDRI.
