Can anyone assist me with how to slowly introduce a spotlight onto a black stage and slowly animate the light from zero brilliance to bright spotlight on my entertainer? Also how to make a completly black scene to start with,as there is always light on my subject no matter what I do! Any help appreciated. Cheers

Make sure that Auto Headlamp is set to never in the General group of the Editor tab of Render Settings, and that the Enviromment mode in Environment is set to Scene Only.

You should be able to animate the light settings - Luminous Flux will let you bring it up from dark to your desired value.
