Help with Matte Fog Setting

I struggle to get the matte fog setting to make any change in my renders.  I see other users make really nice effects with it, but in my renders it never does anything.  See the attached example.  One render is with matte fog turned on at the default setting (screenshot of settings attached) and one is with matte fog turned off.  I have also tried playing around with the values but have never seen an effect.

Any suggestions?

  • The visibility settings for your fog are measured in meters. You won't see anything for an indoor render with your current value of 1000. Not at my computer at the moment, so can't really give better advice.

Here are two illustrations of Matte Fog and Ground Fog

    1. Matte Fog, which is basically haze and you'll see it only for the most distant objects.
    2. Ground Fog, which is prominent on the ground and fades with the height

Or did you want to have something that sometimes is called God Rays?

Thanks for the responses.  I was not aware that matte fog only applies in the distance.  I thought it created a haze effect throughout the entire environment.

  • My matte fog example was done using the default distance settings of 1000m. So to see an effect in a room you need to change this default value. Try changing this value to a much smaller value...

Ah, now I understand.  I think Daz could rename this setting to make it clearer: "Matte Fog Distance."  By calling it "Matte Fog Visiblity" it suggests a higher value will cause the fog to be more visible.

    Thank you for your help.

  • It does have (m) after the name, to indicate it is a value in meters.
