Categories disappeared, and cannot get files through search - how do I fix it?

My region had a severe thunderstorm a few nights ago - and the power went out briefly, and since then whenever I opened DAZ Studio 4.24, I get this message:

"A valid PostgreSQL CMS connection could not be established. Several DAZ Studio features that require a valid PostgreSQL CMS connection, such as context aware content views and loading content installed using the Daz Connect service will not be available.  Check any network, anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-ransomware, and/or firewall settings for potential conflicts"

I have no problem successfully opening and using the DAZ Studio program, but the problem is, all of the categories have disappeared, and I am unable to search anything in my content library.  What is going on?  How do I fix this?

The problem may have more to do with the Content Management Service.  I may have had problems with it since I installed DAZ Studio 4.24.  Now I am reinstalling the 4.11 Beta version (because I would like to use the lip sync feature) - but it is taking such a long time to install the Content Management Service.  Does it usually take a long time to install the CMS when installing DAZ Studio nowadays?

Maybe I installed 4.24 around the same time I learned about 3Delight eventually being discontinued, and I had downloaded an installer for 4.24 if I need it in the future.  But how can I fix this CMS issue?

I did learn that the installation of CMS process may seem slow, but that could be due to a very large library which I do have.

Also, at one point earlier in the week, I did have both the 4.24 and 4.11 Beta versions open at the same time. Could that be the problem, and if not, what could it be?

I have a nasty feeling that the power faiure may have corrupted the database, which would stop DS from connecting to the database server (PostgreSQL). It could just be settings or coincidentally an updated security tool getting in the way, but do you have a back-up of the database in case?

Hmm, are you installing PostgreSQL or the Valentina to PostgreSQL conversion tool (which isn't needed at all unless you have a really old system, but potentially has do to a lot of work as "installing" is actually converting the old database to the new - as in DS 4.8 - system)

    What's "Valentina"?

And how would I know if I am installing the PostgreSQL?  I didn't click on any PostgreSQL to install it.

I am using Windows 11. When you said "old system" what do you mean?

Sadly, no backup of the database.  But if I do install the database, I will most definitely be creating a backup of it for sure.

This was my region's first power failure since January 2020.

Are there any ways for me to install the database?

I've had my current computer since 2020 or 2021. Could that be considered old?

The database is not installed, it is created locally (when you install content, usually, or when  you save most types of file). PostgreSQL is the current database engine, valentina was the very old engine (up to DS 4.8, as I recall, and certainly no longer used in DS 4.9+). Check what you have listed in the Installed tab of Install Manager (there may be only one version of PostgreSQL installed at any time, the release channel used shouldn't matter but the bit architecure - 32 bit or 64 bit - does).

I found this in the path C:\Windows {x64)\Daz 3D\DAZStudio4\cms", an .exe file called "DAZPostgresqlCMS_9.3.4".  Could that be an issue with DAZ Studio 4.24?

Should I double click that EXE in order to reinstall the database?

Could a fresh reinstall of Windows 11 be ideal in order to get everything back on track?

So does that mean I may have two versions of PostgreSQL installed and that may be causing the problem?

What path should I locate the PostgreSQL database?

I am thinking, does the 4.11 Beta version have a completely different PostgreSQL database than the current 4.24 version?

Check the path in DIM and compare it to the path in Daz Studio. They must be the same.

Are you asking the paths must be the same or the databases must be the same?

Also, what folder should the PostgreSQL database be in? I checked C:\App Data\Roaming\DAZ 3D\cms\ContentCluster" and found nothing. Of course, I did do a system restore earlier this afternoon.

The path you give above is the expected location for the PostgreSQL executable, so that looks OK. If you installed with DIM it will be listed in the installed tab, if you used a stand-alone installers it will be in the regular Windows list of Installed applications. It doesn't sound as if you lack the basic aplication, though you could check using whichever of those methods aplies, so the next question would be is it starting up. If you open Task Manager (right-click on the Task Bar) and click the More Details button then when you start Daz Studio you should see half-a-dozen entries for postgresql  in the list of Background Processes - do you?

I saw two or three entries for PostgreSQL.  I ended the task for all of these instances, and no luck.  Also, the path I gave, I see no executable file for PostgreSQL now.  What happened? Did I look in the wrong folder?

I am at the point that it may be safe to declare the power disruption may have been to blame, and I may have to back up my DAZ library and do a fresh reinstall of Windows 11 - which shouldn't take as long as the system restore process did.

Also, aside from losing the categories and search results not showing, I also have not been able to get a pop-up that prompts me to work offline or sign in upon opening the program.  However, the most recently used scenes do still display on the "Open recent" tab.

I found something on StackOverflow about how to repair a corrupted PostgreSQL database.

On that site, it suggested to use the following commands:

    mkdir -p /var/run/postgresql/9.6-main.pg_stat_tmp ###BREAK### sudo service postgresql-9.6 restart

The post also suggested to change the filename/versions as displayed in the error message. Therefore, the second command starts with sudo.

The two commands are separated by the word ###BREAK###.

How could these commands be revised to display the right file name and version?

It looks like I wasn't the only one who had such problem I am now facing.  It's been happening possibly for multiple users pretty lately.

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/737841/ds-4-2-problem-with-postgresql-not-connected

The link to the thread could be helpful, only I rely on Windows 11. Could there be a dummy file somewhere?

Tried it.  Still cannot connect to the database.

I actually wonder if power disruptions due to thunderstorms in my area may have been the source of the problem?

Could doing a fresh reinstall of Windows 11 be the solution?

  • Richard HaseltineRichard Haseltine Posts: 107,911

Please stop trying things at random, you risk making matters worse. I didn't ask you to stop the processes, I asked if they were there - which would indicate that the database was running and the issue is communication - though it is unusual, in my experience, to see only two entries.

Are you saying that  C:\Windows {x64)\Daz 3D\DAZStudio4\cms" now has no executable? That is the normal location of the PostgreSQL application. The other path, C:\App Data\Roaming\DAZ 3D\cms\ContentCluster, is close to the default location if you are running a fairly old version of  Windows (recent versions should put it in C:/Users/YOU/AppData).

It is not a good idea to run command line prompts like the one from StackOverflow unless you knoww hat they are doing.

Unfortunately there are many things that can throw PostgreSQL off its game, we need to figure out what the root issue is - other people with problems may have different issues.

I just found that the DAZPostgresqlCMS_9.3.4.exe file is in the "C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\cms" folder.  It is currently in the 32-bit folder as I post this.

And for clarification, the folder I was originally referring to a few posts back was "C:\Program Files {x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\cms".

Might be a AV or FW blocking the connection.....

Should I move or copy the DAZPostgresqlCMS_9.3.4.exe file to the "C:\Program Files {x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\cms" folder?

If DS is not able to connect to cms cluster, CDB Maintenance won't do anything. So resolving connection issue is the 1st priority.

Is your DIM's able to connect to cms ? Open DIM, check if the database icon in the upper right corner is fully white ?

I just checked, in Install Manager, the list of installed files.  It turns out it did not install the necessary DAZPostgresqlCMS file.

However, I tried to reinstall the 4.11 Beta version earlier this afternoon using the installer file, and it was said to be installing the Content Management Service when the program was massively installed, but the installing of the Content Management Service took a long time. Is it normal for it to take a long time to install?

As you said above, cms cluster folder locates in %appdata%\DAZ 3D\cms\. That's the default folder when it was created. If you found nothing there, you should press F2 in Daz Studio, go to CMS Settings tab, check where cluster locates (if you ever redirected the folder to other location...) and if the Port is correctly defined. Try Start / Stop postgreSQL service as well.

Also check the settings in DIM see if DIM has connection to cms.

And in Task Manager, can you see the session of postgreSQL Server is started ?

I found the icon.  It wasn't white. I tried to attempt a connection, but it failed.
