Is the Surfer Lights an iRay Dome?

From the default content? I think that is a 3Delight set only.

Thanks. Yes, the free one that comes with one of the Essentials packs. I've been using it for test renders with both 3DL & iRay thinking it converts.

I will need to do some tutorials on 3DL & iRay lighting it seems. I like iRay much better. 3DL is makes those lights seem like sunset which may be intended given the appearence of the beach scene that comes with it but it also makes the character seem more claymation like.

  • Slow is going to be a relative term.

But i think the real problem is not understanding the differences between Iray and 3delight.

3delight is a biased render engine, this means that it only calculates light bounces to a certain convergence and then stops. This is why the percentage of render is fairly linear.

Iray is an unbiased render engine, this means that it does not have an end point on light bounces. The Percentage of render completion is actually irrelevant. Most of my renders with it so far sit at 99% for the predominance of rendering.

What you need to focus on is the Iterration number.

While the OP was able to get to 472 iterations in under 2 and a half minutes, that was probably a pretty grainy image.

From what i've done with iray, so far, less than 2k, and for some less than 5k,  iterations is too grainy to be useable.

On my poor twin dual core, that's about 5 hrs render time. We'll see what the dual 8 core opterons do this week.

as far as the OP's computer, it is really anemic for 3d graphics, and expecially iray.

The specs people have tossed around so far are incorrect.

The GPU only has 960 cuda cores at 600mhz

The Cpu, is only a quad core and even with HT(hyperthreading) it's base frequency is 2.4ghz.

Honeslty i wouldn't expect a "good", read really grainy, render in less than an hour, and a presentable in less than 4-5 hrs.

Make sure you've got Photoreal selected as your render mode (render settings - render mode).

@DrunkMonkeyProductions "Iray is an unbiased render engine, this means that it does not have an end point on light bounces. "

Actually Iray has an adjustable parameter for max light bounces. Max Path Length default is -1 (infinate) but a setting between 7 and 11 will limit the number of bounces and still provide output indistinguishable from the infinite setting.

  • You would have to find a way to detach he Nvidia GPU from the primary display, and use only the built-in/motherboard display (Intel HD graphics whatever) so Iray can fully utilize the Nvidia device.

Even then, wth such an underpowered GPU and large textures, it's just not practical.

As for the black render, add a Sphere Primitive, place it at about 300 on the Y and 300 on the Z, assign it an Iray Emissives shader, and set the Emission to 100 Watts (click around the various drop-down menus to find the "W" for the light emission).

This should be roughly equivalent to a 100w light bulb in the ceiling of a room, in front of and above the figure. It'll be grainy because it's a relatively dark scene, but that should be enough to let you know if it's going to work at all.
