Question for vendors: what Daz figure's products sell better these days?

I'm gathering some info, and I'm not sure if this is a slippery slope, but I'm looking for some input from Daz PAs. Since the release of G3F, has she become top dog selling wise? I'm asking mainly from an accessory/clothing/character perspective.
I know character wise it's harder to do a double set due to differences in G3F/M versus previous generations (ie V4/Genesis, V4/G2F, etc), so I'm also wondering if those have made an impact as to what generation sells better.

The newest generation always sells the best...customers want the newest and best
As far as characters go, for me personally with a V4/G2 character, sales were about half what my G3F sales were LAST August. I can only imagine the gap is even further at this point. Its just not worth the dev time =/
This.
Thanks for the input guys. I've been thinking that the more figures something is compatible with, the better the sales, but it seems that logic may be all wrong.
Don't forget to take into account how much is usable with the newer figures due to auto fit.
Good point. Except high-heeled shoes. All my attempts so far to convert V4 shoes to G3F have been fruitless. I've tried SickleYield's version, and tgunner.
I'm just a customer, but I'll chime in. At first I was only looking for G3 clothes and I was filtering out other stuff. Now, as I have used Auto-fit more and have seen how well it works, I'll buy a G2 outfit if I really like it and it's at a good discount. Except high-heel shoes.
I could read into this 2 ways. Are you saying people will generally move to newer tech because of this, or will still buy older items because of it... or both?
Not all customers want the "newest and best"
I just mean that new figures start out with a fair bit that is already compatable.
I generally tend to agree, but from a cash flow stand point, which market tends to have the majority? IMO sales numbers are a better reflection simply because not everyone uses the forums.
True. Thanks.
A BETTER QUESTION TO ASK.
What do you like to make ?
Make a list of 3D things you like best, THEN find out which ones
on the list sell well.
I am buying G3 mostly because it's supposed to be optimized for export to gaming. I'll have to take DAZ's word for that because the complaining about the extra bones and such in the forums is confusing. I have encontered bones in facial rigs before outside of DAZ characters so I know that is becoming more standard. I'm just a hobbyist at DAZ, modeling, and game making though and the tech standards tend to move faster then I anyway.
Although I try to buy only G3, I still buy G2 clothing and hair though because I read the clothing morphs and textures and hair morphs and textures transfer to G3 without problems. Which is good given the thin selection of G3 items. Oh, the standard things gets created anew fast enough but the odd things like historical clothing and such tend not to get re-created with each Genesis iteration. I've read the skin textures don't transfer though but I read in the forums there is a PA product soon by Zev to alleaviate that problem. I'll have to see if they make the same product for Genesis 2 and Genesis. For skin textures I want to create a unique skin texture for each character rather than use one of the character skins in the DAZ store so I will be looking forward to that product I read about.
That said, I will wind up buying 'just enough' Genesis and Genesis 2 items to enable me to make complete scenes in DAZ Studio even though I won't be exporting those versions to games or such.
I think I might like to try my hand at making a product someday for the DAZ Store but that will have to wait. I'm not really any good at it so I would need the aid of a tool like Marvelous Designer and that is expensive. I need to buy and learn the DAZ basics and such first which has already been expensive for me. I don't have a big desire to create new characters except as a part of a clothing concept.
I already know what I enjoy making, my question pertains to what figures to support. :)
@nonesuch00 Not sure what engines you prefer, but have you considered looking at Daz's other side and using their game-ready assets for Unity? https://www.morph3d.com/
Well, I've bought them, LOL and you're welcome DAZ, and they are mostly a good 1-to-1 translation of Genesis 2 character product sets and much more realitic that I would like. At the most detailed level and owing to a few Unity bugs they are still a bit much for anything less than Direct X 12 / Vulkan / Metal SW/HW but they do look very good in Unity.
The type and style of game artwork I like is more toony style and as DAZ, Unity, and the HW/SW needed to run all that improve I hope to be creating games more in the style I like. I'm not wanting to abandon realistic DAZ characters 100% because I'd like to be an effective caricaturist with enough practice.
I do imagine though they, Morph 3D, will be optimizing Genesis 3, eventually, for game engines and it would be nice when they do if DAZ or Morph 3D would create a simple manual for preparing, optimizing, and exporting Genesis 3 products ready for use in Morph 3D & Unity but to be realistic I will need to be making the clothing I make for my characters and individualing the faces and body to deviate from stock.
For me the the game making hobby part is on the back burner and the need to learn to use DAZ Studio, Blender, and Gimp effectively and maybe Marvelous Designer will need to be taken care of. The HW and SW that games and the game engines themselves have a bit of catch up to do so that is fine.
G3 stuff sells better but G2 stuff is far easier to rig.
Same here I am not one so easily pursuaded
by a higher version #
and I do not ....repeat DO NOT!, buy into the
named& numbered character bundles,
marketing gimmick ("bethany 7" etc).
Give me autofitting content & morphs and I will dial in my
own characters
But most people do run to the latest version so from a
marketing perspective I understand why PA's
focus on the latest figures.
I more or less stopped at G2F and G2M, which are pretty much what I use all the time in DS. I have a handful of G3F content, but didn't like G3M at at all. What's most likely to persuade me to hit the 'buy' button now are new tools and scripts, shaders or environments and props, or sales on clothes and hair for older figures. New stuff for Bryce is always a draw too, but a new and updated version of Bryce would be even better :)
Exactly this. And I am still a new user only about 5 1/2 months into Daz. I have purchase a tone of stuff for Victoria 4, Michael 4 Gen1 and Gen 2. Almost nothing for Gen 3 because I am very happy with what I currently have. I will probably add bits and pieces for Gen3 if there is a really good deal but honestly, so far. I like the older versions better.
I've been here about 15 months, and it was a huge debate for me to go from Genesis to G2M/F (having to buy 'twice' as many stuff was a big meh, but I'm glad I did).
Genesis 3... yeah, I don't see that happening. I'm much more likely to leapfrog to Genesis 4, assuming something big changes with it.
I use Genesis 2 and 3 equally and will pretty much buy anything interesting for either of them. Autofit will make pretty much anything G2 fit G3 (except the arfing shoes).
V4 and M4 I do not use anymore, I just kept running into too many problems with cross talking on the morphs to make it workwhile to fool with them.
Genesis 1 I still use for creatures and background people.
IMHO it seems like G3 is the big thing right now as it seems like the vendors are leaning that way, I'm finding it harder to find new stuff for G2 and I'm with a few others in that I'm mostly staying away from G3 (I've picked up a few articles of clothing). For me it was two reasons, my disposible income isn't what it use to be right now so I can't afford to jump onto the G3 bandwagon even with autofit and second, I couldn't seem to find a 'flawless' skin for the G3 female (that could be me just not finding the right product).
I'll buy the G3 stuff when it's cheap enough... if I can get a pro bundle for under $30, for example, or an outfit for a few dollars, so I've ended up with about half of the G3Fs as well as M7 and Gianni 7. But the G2s are currently still a lot more versatile, so most of my G3 content will end up being fitted to the older figures rather than used on it's intended subject. What's going to really kill my purchases of G3 items going forward, though, is if more products end up being exclusively available via DAZ connect. I was actually getting ready to let my Rendo Prime membership lapse before they started this nonsense, but now it seems I need to keep supporting Rendo in case DAZ completely loses it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, cos it seems like no PAs are listening - I really like G3F but I'd like her a whole lot more if we could get some fae / fairy style characters for her like we had with G2F. I'm talkin' http://www.daz3d.com/karynna-for-aiko-6 , http://www.daz3d.com/ysabeau-6 , http://www.daz3d.com/anabelle , http://www.daz3d.com/tigerlily , http://www.daz3d.com/echo etc... (I know some of those weren't strictly fairy characters, but they had the fae look to them).
Sadly I think my suspicion a few months back that such characters have been abandoned with G3 in favour of more realistic models (possibly because they sell better?) is looking to be true. Its a hollow victory
Edit: some of Silver and Godin's latest creations are definitely getting there, and I'll probably buy them, but nothing has quite hit the spot for me yet.
Speaking purely from sales numbers, G3 definitely sells best (by far) compared to any other figure. But... Items that fit multiple figures for a slight premium in price sell even better. For outfits I would suggest G3/G2 both in one. But for hair, oddly enough, I think that a G3/V4 mix does the best.
Not that I'm anywhere close to making items for the store but...so you'd make the clothing twice, once for G2 & once for G3 and include both in the product, or you'd make it for G2 and let autofit do the rest? Or can autofit not adjust textures to G3 I thought? Or is that only the skin textures?
Steve, I'm onboard with the G3 thing and am happy to spend lots of money on it going forward but before I fully commit I'd really like to know if we're going to be seeing a Giselle 7 or Ysabeau 7 or something similar? Cos if not then I'll probably have to just stick with G2. Any hints you could give please? Were they amongst the axed character lines?
Autofit is used to fit clothes (including textures) from one figure to another, but you'll usually get better results with a manual refit than with automatic refit resulting from autofit (which can be a starting point).
It disappoints me, as usual, to know that the market demands mean that vendors are rewarded for making stuff I don't happen to use or have interest in.
But on the other hand, even with the huge windfalls I've had recently, I STILL have 430 items on my wishlist and there are countless other items in other stores. Soooo... I can't get too upset, I suppose. ;)
(And shaders are a wonderful way to make everything old new again)
I fully appreciate that everyone has different reason for sticking with Genesis 2, but Genesis 3, in my opinion, does not have that big an entrance price in order to make it a useful addition to your character pool. In my mind, the only must haves, are the Head and Body morphs, and the expression pack. These are 20$ each, and there is no bundle, so with G3M and G3F together that adds up to a hefty $120. However if you are in the PC club, and buy during a 60% off sale they are much cheaper. Using PC coupons I think I picked up all 6 for around $20 dollars in total, so that it a very reasonable entry price.
To use Genesis 3 to represent younger characters you will need Zev0s Growing Up stuff, and for the older generation, the aging morphs (although these are not available yet). Other than that, spending $10-15 over at Rendo to get the G2F UV set for G3F, and you should be able to create a diverse range of Genesis 3 characters all wearing G2F/G2M (or older generations) clothing and hair.
Naturally if we ever get Generation X for Genesis 3, then that would make the newest generation even more flexible.
