Great news!
Ok, yesterday my Windows 10 decided to do another update.
So, today I tried to put back the ERC in carrara's extensions' folder and...
It's working again! No crashes or other problems anymore, at least on my machine.
So I definitely think this issue was just caused by some windows updates messing with themselves.
Oooookay, let's pretend I didn't say anything...
ERC in Carrara is NOT working again.
After 4-5 correct launches, Carrara started crashing again.
Removed ERC from the extensions again. Carrara works again.
I get the same two errors as before. I am not sure I understand your questions, but my Daz Studio has not changed.
RE: questions about systems affected by the crash problem, which is resolved by removing the ERC plugin.
My system is Windows II Pro, version 24H2 with AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor, 3.8 GZ, 64 GB Ram, NVIDIA GEForce RTX 3090 Ti 24GB.
I still think it is a software (windows) issue, but my System is (a bit old, I'm afraid)
Windows 10 Home 64bit, Intel Core I5 4460 @3.20GHZ, 16GB ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 2047MB
Many reported UEFI issues on W10. It does state internal windows functions were updated. https://www.extremetech.com/computing/microsoft-rolls-out-may-2025-windows-11-and-10-updates-with-new-ai-tools I found the plugin. https://carraracafe.com/fenrics-plugins-now-free/ I Will try to install it when I get a chance.
I did see where BunnyIP did post an issue with it in 2023? If it is runtime library related. Kinda looks that way. Those really can be a PITA.
Have not been able to run the ERC plugin since I removed it, keep getting Carrara crashing when I do ......
Well I loaded it many times. No problems.C Pro 8.5.1.19. There are dlls in the extension folder also. Fairly new install on a mostly current W11.
I am including a screen shot of runtimes I installed. Also an extensions text file of what extensions I have. The problem with runtimes I have seen is you can have a registry entry or corrupt file etc... Just downloading runtimes and putting them where they belong does not always solve the problem.
Maybe there is another plugin conflicting. I just copied the 64bit version for 8 to the directory.
I'v rebuild Fenric's ERCModifier plugin from its source code in an affort to solve the "failing to load" problem. It loads fine on my Win 11 Home laptop, as does the original.
However I do think the (open) source code is not at the same version level as the original plugin. Probably at a lower minor level. Some functions were missing causing compilation errors. I used C8 SDK functions to fill in for the missing functions.
The fact that the source code is at a different level might cause old bugs to reappear again. I have not tested all the capabilities only the Basic option with a controlling object.
It ( ERCModifier-Win64-rebuild.zip ) is available for download on my SF page (see footnote). Let me known how it fares on your system.
Thank you RuudL, will be interesting to see if it helps those having issues.
+1
Houstan - we no longer have a problem !!! Working fine so far, using Win64-rebuild version.
great news !
Yay, Bunyip!!!!!
Great to hear that Carrara is working fine again. Even with the Win64-rebuild version of ERCModifier.
I'm curious whether others are having the same experience. Do they?
Thank you RuudL, your version seems to work. I never used ERC, but my Carrara does not crash anymore with your ERC rebuild.
Still, my configuration may be strange: days ago I saw this Humble Bundle
https://www.humblebundle.com/books/learn-to-program-2025-pearson-books
even for 1 $ you get interesting things, so for the C++ book I installed Visual Studio 2015 and...
I thought this was the reason why, for some days, my Carrara worked properly with Fenric's original ERC.
I was going to tell you about this, but I noticed that now, after several proper launches and days, Carrara crashes again.
So I installed RuudL version and Carrara starts properly.
Moreover, with RuudL's rebuild version installed, I do not need to remove Fenric's one. They may co-exist, Carrara does not complain (for the moment, at least)
That was not my intention. There can only be one active as they both have the same IDs (FamilyID, ClassID, GUIDs and CommandIDs). Which one will be active depends on the order in which the plugins are initialized during Carrara's launch phase. If the rebuild version is initilialized after the original one than the rebuild will supersede the original in memory.
In my development setup I can control the initialization order by placing the plugin in a specific named folder which contents will be processed last. On Windows the foldername have to start with a '0' (zero). On Mac with a 'z'.
How can you tell which version is active? Well, you can make a small change in the <plugin>.txt file with a plain text editor (like Notepad++) just to make a menu-option appear in a different submenu and/or give it a different menu-title.
As an example I changed the submenu string into "Fenric-rebuild' of the scenecommand 'Add ERC Modifier'. It will now appear in Edit>Fenric-rebuild submenu whenever the rebuild version is active.
