Canvas Help (depth map)

So I'm trying to use iRay to capture a depth map of a figure, with the closest parts white, going to black at the most distant parts. Ultimately my objective is to use this depth map to create a displacement map.
So far I've learned to render to a canvas. I can create an EXR file, which I then open in GIMP. However, this file is just pure white and black. Adjusting exposure in GIMP does not reveal any additional greyscale details. I looked around and found that the default exposure level in Daz is likely too high. I tried altering exposure levels in powers of 2, but nothing changed the final result. Just a white silhouette against a black background (I went up to 240 exposure value).

Anyone know how to do what I'm trying to do?
