This is definitely the worst forum ever based on search options

I honestly love the community here, and wouldn't dream of mentioning the few people who are constantly complaining about any and everything, always. That would be a personal attack.

I do also like the community but that has nothing to do with this terrible search function smiley or, wait it has, because I like the community it would be helpfull to easily find some threads again without browsing hours through this forum smiley

there is an opportunity for Daz to improve the search capabilities of this forum and supposedly this was brought to the attention of Daz3d, but I don't know if it means it will be fixed or they can fix it. I don't think they own the software powering this forum or that they have the tools to do so if it's open source so it has been a long waiting game for many users here and I hope they are able to remedy this soon.

the old forum was fine, all worked fine, but they tried to fix something that was not broken, or what can you think when even the Log In on forums is still broken?, an infinite loop of  "sign/unsign" since months!, there are very good forum engines around there(phpBB, Vbulletin, SMF, Invision, Ikonboard, etc) that can be inserted on the server but only god knows the reasons.

agree to 100% - never change a running system or fix things that don`t need any fixing.

A good thing would be to have a second search option just for the headlines of the discussions not for the full content of every discussion, that would make it much easier to find older threads or specific threads

As a matter of fact, they did take down the search function for a while a few wees back, and back then I thought they were going to fix it, to allow for instance wild cards and basic metas, but nope, you cannot even do string search in it.

And if anyone from Daz is reading this thread it would be nice at some point to add color schemes/skins for those of us with vision issues or dyslexia, or some other disability who cant easily do the white on black when it's generated by light, not paper, so we do not need to rely on a 3d party plugin which may or may not be developed properly, generates ads, panders us for monetary donations or or causes general mayhem with our browsers when they update or go to another site. Thank you.

Is yours white on black? Mine is black on white but I don't remember changing it to that. If I did, I don't remember how.

LoL I guess StratDragon meant black on white wink

I usually rely on Google to do the searching. I've come across other forum nuisances, like getting repeatedly logged out and logged in (and I mean repeatedely to the point I have to close the browser and start over.)

But I'l agree people here are helpful. :-) Now if you want to talk about forums that are full of toxicity, visit a gaming forum. holy geez. the Sony vs Microsoft debacle gets out of control.

or heck, even Disney theme park forums are known to be tough.

Maybe they will repalce it with the RDNA forum software.

Well, if they ever replace it, (and not anytime soon, enough changes already)  they need to get the image attachments working too!

White background, black text, bad combo when it's not ink and paper.

I told you I was dyslexic!

TBH, the search functions on the previous two forum software incarnations weren't a whole lot better. I've been reling on google site search for at least five years here.

How do one perform a google search on this forum by the way? Do you use a script or a plugin or smth?

  • AdemnusAdemnus Posts: 744

I agree, but the usual response to this question is to use Google to search these forums.  So I won't suggest that.   But I've given up holding my breath waiting for DAZ to do the obvious convenience fixes on the forum.  I still use sunglasses when I come to this forum.

my kingdom for a total switch to Reddit-style forums.

Either use the search window on your browser, if you have one, or go to google.com and use the main search field. Then enter your search terms followed by site:daz3d.com like worst forum search site:daz3d.com and this thread comes up at the top of the list.

Too late.  I saw what you did there!

But you have to admit, the forum makes up for it by how positive and cheery the userbase is.

    :D

I'm not detecting any sarcasm at all. We were all very cheerful until not long ago.

Hey, I'm cheerful!  Been busy with stuff ouside of the forums.  Err...

  • I used to work doing QA for Xbox games (through an employment services companies, I did not work directly for Microsoft. To be clear)

It was a weird job, given most of my coworkers were 20 years younger than me. ... Yeah.

I remember the managers of the teams were working on more rigorous training and standards, and, in particular, working out some education on how to word feedback. I THINK I had some (minor) role helping that.

Anyway, I was commenting on how you can still say what you need to say, you just have to consider that other people are personally invested, not to make it an ATTACK. Just be careful with your language.

The young guy I was talking to rolled his eyes and sighed loudly, 'Yeah, they don't want us to be HONEST.'

At which point I stopped wasting my time, nodded, and finished my lunch.

His words imply that young guy would have loved working for Steve Jobs.  Until he got feedback from Mr. Jobs.  Then he would have hated, absolutely hated working for Steve Jobs.

and if you search a thread with the words "Jack Tomalin" for example you get listed every single thread with "Jack" with "Tomalin" with "Jack Tomalin" not usefull. It is a wonder that the search function does not search for a space key :)

With most search engines, puting a phrase in quotes searches for the whole phrase, not the individual words.

I enter "site:daz3d.com/forums algovincian" to search the forums for "algovincian". If I were running DAZ's site, I would prefer that people use google to search the forums as well, as I believe searches on google impact future search results (higher rank).

At this point, they may as well just swap out their search for a Google search bar preset to search Daz. It would easier for everyone involved, including Daz. People who are not savy enough to be aware of how to use Google to search a site will only get lost and give up.

Umm...and I think Vanilla has that as a plugin already.

I am talking about Daz doing this, not a user adding a plug in. Once again, that requires the user to be aware of these things. How many people know about what you just linked? I sure didn't.

That's not for users...that plugin is to replace the actual forum search with a Google site search.  In the forum config files...so Daz would be the ones to do it.

I like the forums here as the people here are a lot better than elsewhere..  But as for the search function here yes it is terrible, unlike like other forum software this one seems to not have the ability to be able to search specific sub forums, instead when you are searching for something you get a load of other hits from all the other sub forums which is a right pain to sort out..

    But such is life. :D

Here's something that drives me nuts about search here:

I search for, say, Dynamic Tips.

What I want is for posts that have all search terms to be displayed first. Instead? The search shows me the newest posts that have any search term.

    nnggh.

If you're searching the forum via Google for info on a DS product (something I often do before I buy, particularly with scripts or plugins), forum links can usually be found sitting alongside links to torrent sites for that product. I'd have thought Daz would have wanted more control over search results than that.
